League of Legends academy teams develop players by giving them a place to compete in structured, regional Tier 2 leagues. The specific coaching, practice schedule, and route to a top-tier roster vary by organization and region; Riot’s published materials describe the competition system and its rules, not one universal training curriculum.
What an academy team means in League of Legends
“Academy” is often used broadly for a team or roster intended to develop players below a region’s top professional league. It does not describe one globally standardized league or organization type. Riot’s 2026 overview lists several distinct Tier 2 competitions, including the North American Challengers League (NACL), the LCK Challengers League (LCKCL), EMEA Regional Leagues (ERLs) and EMEA Masters, and China’s League of Legends Development League (LDL). Their structures and relationship to top-tier teams differ by region.
Riot Games Competitive Operations describes these competitions as “localized entry points for aspiring professionals, creating a sustainable pipeline of talent for the future.” That is the stated purpose of the ecosystem, not a promise that an individual player will be promoted, signed, or remain a professional. Riot’s League of Legends competitive overview outlines the regional ecosystem and its Tier 2 competitions.

How the player pathway works
- Compete in a regional Tier 2 environment. Players gain experience in organized league competition rather than relying solely on unaffiliated play. The league and season format depend on the region.
- Meet the applicable roster and eligibility requirements. Registration, roster construction, and other conditions are governed by the relevant rules for that competition and season.
- Build a record in competition. Playing in a structured league can create opportunities to demonstrate performance and gain visibility. The official sources do not establish a guaranteed promotion mechanism or a single route into a top league.
- Seek opportunities at a higher tier. Whether a player can move to another roster or competition depends on current rules, team decisions, and available openings—not simply on participation in an academy.
This pathway is best understood as an opportunity structure, not a career ladder with a fixed timetable. Riot’s published pages do not provide a progression rate, typical time to promotion, or comparative success rate across regions.

What rules shape an academy team
League rules affect more than match format. Riot’s regulations library lists the 2026 LoL Esports Global Policies as covering team operations, roster construction, player eligibility, contract requirements, sponsorship guidelines, and disciplinary measures. The library also lists regional materials, including 2026 NACL and ERL rulebooks. These documents establish governance requirements; they do not prescribe how coaches must teach or how players must practice.
For a particular player or team, consult the current rulebook for the specific region and season. Riot’s Competitive Operations regulations library is the place to verify the applicable edition. Rules and league formats can change, so an older description may not match current eligibility or roster conditions.

What academy players practice—and what is not established
There is no single training schedule or curriculum set out in the official materials reviewed. They do not specify a universal number of scrims, coaching sessions, replay reviews, or mental-skills sessions. Those choices belong to individual organizations and may vary by coach, roster, season, and region.

How to compare regional academy pathways
Because “academy” does not mean the same system everywhere, compare a named league and season rather than treating all regions as interchangeable. Useful questions include:
- Competition: Which Tier 2 league or regional league system does the roster enter?
- Eligibility: What do that season’s rules require for players and roster registration?
- Format: What season, split, and qualification structure applies that year?
- Connection to the top tier: Is there a defined route for a team or player to reach a higher competition, and what conditions govern it?
- Development evidence: Are claims about coaching based on named team documentation, a coach interview, or a player account?
Riot’s overview establishes that regional Tier 2 competitions exist, while its regulations library points to global and region-specific rules. Neither establishes identical answers to these questions across regions.

Does playing for an academy guarantee a professional career?
No. Tier 2 competition is intended to provide structured opportunities and entry points, but the official materials do not show that every player advances or quantify how many do. A league place can provide competitive experience; promotion, a contract, and long-term professional work remain uncertain outcomes.
