It can play classic Game Boy cartridges, but it does not run continuously on button mashing alone: harvested power fluctuates, so the system may pause and then restore saved game state when power returns.
How does the battery-free Game Boy work?
ENGAGE combines energy harvesting with a low-power computing platform and checkpointing. Six mechanical switches beneath the directional pad and A and B buttons generate electricity as they are pressed; amorphous-silicon solar cells on the front of the chassis collect light. A Texas Instruments BQ25570 manages harvested power, which is stored in a 3.3 mF capacitor. Those are the parts documented for this research build, not a guarantee that substitute components will perform the same way. The project repository describes the hardware and software.
In each harvesting switch, pressing a button moves a magnet inside a tightly wound coil. The resulting change in magnetic field generates power. The switches supplement the solar cells, while the capacitor buffers energy between moments of generation and use.
The emulator runs on an Ambiq Apollo3 Blue ARM Cortex-M4 microcontroller. To preserve progress despite power loss, ENGAGE uses a dedicated 512 KB Fujitsu FRAM chip and differential checkpointing, which records changes rather than repeatedly copying all volatile memory. A custom cartridge interface adapts the platform’s 3 V system to the 5 V logic required by Game Boy cartridges. The system is designed to recover after interruptions, not to prevent them.

Can a Game Boy run on solar power?
ENGAGE can harvest solar energy, but it is not a stock Nintendo Game Boy modified to run from solar cells. It is a custom platform designed to emulate the original Game Boy and uses both sunlight and button-generated energy. How long it can run depends on available harvested energy and the device’s power demands; the cited project information does not establish a fixed runtime.
The display shows one of the design trade-offs. ENGAGE uses a Japan Display LPM013M126A panel measuring 26.02 × 27.82 mm, smaller than the original Game Boy’s 47 × 43 mm screen. Its 176 × 176 pixel matrix is higher in pixel count than the original’s 160 × 144. The team considered power use, refresh rate and drive-circuit complexity; it rejected e-ink because refresh was too slow and the drive circuitry too complex for this design.

Do button presses really power the console?
Yes. The six switches convert button motion into electrical energy, so playing contributes power as well as consuming it. But button presses are a supplemental source, not a guarantee of continuous play: the amount generated varies with activity, and the console still depends on sunlight and stored energy. “Button-powered” describes one part of the energy system, not an assurance that every press immediately supplies enough power to keep the game running.
Does it keep playing when the power cuts out?
No. ENGAGE can lose power, and gameplay may pause. Its checkpointing system preserves enough state for the emulator to resume after power returns, avoiding a restart from the beginning.

A 2020 Northwestern University research release reported that, on a not-too-cloudy day with at least moderate button activity, interruptions typically lasted less than one second for every ten seconds of gameplay. The release described the result as playable for some games, including Chess, Solitaire and Tetris, but not yet for all action games. That is a reported condition for the research prototype, not a universal runtime or independent performance test. Northwestern’s release gives the team’s account.
Can it play original Game Boy cartridges?
Yes. ENGAGE uses a custom interface to read classic Game Boy cartridges; the research record names Tetris and Super Mario Land as examples. This capability belongs to the prototype’s custom hardware and emulation setup—it does not mean an ordinary Game Boy has been converted into a battery-free device.

Is ENGAGE available to buy?
The documented ENGAGE is a research prototype, not an identified retail product. Its repository provides hardware and software resources for people interested in studying or reproducing the build, but it does not establish that the named components are currently available or that generic replacements will reproduce the prototype’s behavior.
How does ENGAGE compare with other battery-free gaming research?
A separate 2026 TU Delft record describes TURNER, a modular battery-free games console powered by a hand crank and solar cells. Its mixed-methods study involved 60 participants and examined how energy harvesting affects gameplay, including strategies for generating energy, ergonomics and designing around failures. TURNER is a separate research probe, not a successor to ENGAGE; its study does not establish a consumer-product comparison. The TU Delft record describes the project and study.
