El Niño shifts the zone of tropical Pacific rainfall eastward, changing the odds of wet and dry conditions in regions around the world. The clearest recurring pattern is wetter conditions in parts of the eastern tropical Pacific and nearby Americas, with increased odds of drier conditions in Australia, Indonesia, and parts of South and Southeast Asia. These are seasonal tendencies—not guarantees for a particular location or year.
How El Niño shifts rainfall
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a coupled ocean–atmosphere pattern in the tropical Pacific. It is not simply a patch of unusually warm ocean water: the atmosphere must respond as well.
- Sea-surface temperatures rise in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific.
- Trade winds weaken, allowing warm surface water and the strongest tropical rising air and rainfall to shift east.
- The changed pattern of heat and moisture reorganizes atmospheric circulation. Those circulation changes can influence weather far from the tropical Pacific.
NOAA explains that the atmosphere must respond “by weakening the prevailing winds, known as the trade winds, and also shift patterns of tropical rainfall eastward.” NOAA, Understanding El Niño & ENSO.
NOAA’s explainer describes a diagnostic convention involving Niño 3.4 sea-surface temperatures at least 0.5°C above normal for at least five consecutive overlapping three-month periods, along with an atmospheric response. NOAA has also noted a 2026 transition to RONI for operational use, so that threshold should not be treated as the sole definition used by every agency.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Where rainfall tends to increase or decrease
The broadest signal is in the tropics, where the rainfall belt shifts with the warmer water. Elsewhere, effects are more indirect, transmitted through atmospheric circulation. NOAA’s maps describe typical precipitation patterns, not a forecast for a specific event or locality. NOAA Climate Prediction Center, El Niño Temperature and Precipitation Patterns.
| Region | Typical rainfall tendency during El Niño | Season or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Central and eastern equatorial Pacific | More rainfall as warm water and convection shift east | General tendency |
| Northern Australia, Indonesia, and the Philippines | Drier-than-normal conditions are commonly associated with El Niño | General tendency |
| Coastal Ecuador and northwestern Peru; southern Brazil and central Argentina; equatorial eastern Africa | Wetter conditions | December–February |
| Intermountain regions of the United States and central Chile | Wetter conditions | June–August |
| Southern United States | Increased tendency toward wetter conditions, associated with a stronger Pacific jet stream | U.S. winter; not a local forecast |
The same event can favor rain in one region and drought risk in another. A wet tendency in a seasonal map should not be read as applying year-round, and maps from different seasons are not directly comparable.

Why the same El Niño does not produce the same local outcome
El Niño changes probabilities rather than dictating the weather at every place. A region’s result depends on the season, the event’s characteristics, and other climate drivers that may reinforce or counter the ENSO influence. Even a strong event does not by itself tell you how much rain a particular town will receive.
For a practical comparison of outlooks, check the same region and season, the rainfall category or anomaly being forecast, the ENSO phase and strength, and which other climate drivers are included. For decisions such as water management, farming, or travel, use the relevant national or regional seasonal forecast rather than extrapolating from a global El Niño pattern.

What the dated 2026 outlook said
The World Meteorological Organization’s El Niño/La Niña Update (August 2026), published 3 September 2026, reported that El Niño was firmly established as of mid-August. It forecast a nearly 100% likelihood of persistence through September–November 2026 and December 2026–February 2027, and expected further strengthening. WMO said a very strong event could raise the likelihood of significant rainfall and temperature shifts, while emphasizing that event strength does not translate directly into the magnitude of regional impacts. This is a dated forecast, not a guarantee of conditions observed after its publication. WMO, El Niño/La Niña Update.
WMO’s overview also said its September 2026 global seasonal update expected a strong El Niño to influence global climate patterns through September–November 2026. Regional rainfall outlooks combine ENSO with other climate drivers, so check an up-to-date forecast for the location and season that matter. WMO, El Niño / La Niña Phenomena.
