DuckPlus is presented by its author as a native Mac IDE built specifically for DuckDB. Its defining design choice is unusual: the app embeds DuckDB and uses DuckDB’s own Quack protocol to connect to DuckDB servers, rather than implementing a separate database client protocol. The author also describes virtualized query results, editable rows for eligible queries, and transaction safeguards. Those details are implementation claims from the author, not an independent review.
What DuckPlus is—and who it is for
DuckPlus is described as a free, MIT-licensed Mac application written in Rust with gpui, the UI framework its author associates with Zed. The aim is a client that “only speaks DuckDB,” including DuckDB-specific features such as FROM-first queries, DESCRIBE, table functions, DuckDB types, and administrative functions. The author’s description and project links are in the DuckPlus article.
That focus is a fit for someone who wants a native interface centered on DuckDB rather than a general SQL tool that treats DuckDB as one connection among many. It does not, on the evidence available, establish that DuckPlus is faster or better than other clients.

How DuckDB becomes both the IDE’s engine and its client
DuckPlus’s architecture uses an embedded, in-memory DuckDB instance to communicate with DuckDB servers through Quack. Quack is an HTTP-based extension that supports DuckDB instances acting as clients and servers; see the official Quack overview.
#1 Best Overall
According to the author, DuckPlus sends remote statements with DuckDB’s quack_query function. The author chose that route instead of ATTACH because of catalog gaps. DuckDB documents quack_query as a remote-query function in its reference. This makes the architecture distinctive: DuckPlus does not merely display DuckDB results; it relies on an embedded DuckDB engine to speak DuckDB’s own remote protocol.
The author also describes using the embedded engine to open local .duckdb files. Schema lookup uses its own connection, each query runs on a fresh connection clone, and each query window gets its own server connections. These are reported implementation choices, not independently verified behavior.
What happens to query results and edits
Rendering and sorting results
The author says results stay in Arrow batches and that the grid virtualizes rows, formatting only the cells currently visible. Loading stops at 10,000 rows by default. If every row has been loaded, sorting happens in memory; otherwise, the app asks the server to sort with ORDER BY. The article provides no benchmark results, so these design details should not be read as evidence of a particular speed advantage.

Editing eligible query results
DuckPlus reportedly supports double-clicking a cell to edit it, then stages changes and saves them together in one transaction. Before each UPDATE, the app checks the affected row count; a missing or non-unique key raises an error. The author says plain single-table SELECT results can be edited, while results involving joins, GROUP BY, or common table expressions (CTEs) are read-only.

Safety and administration features
The author describes several safeguards and administrative views:
- A second
Cmd+Enteris required to confirmDROP,DELETE, andTRUNCATE. - Connection colors distinguish environments, with red used for production.
- Tokens are stored in macOS Keychain.
- Sidebar pages provide queries for databases, storage, extensions, settings, memory, secrets, and running Quack servers.
These are features reported by the author; the article does not provide independent security testing.
Quack’s beta status is the central caveat
DuckDB’s official documentation says, “Quack is currently in a beta state.” Its Quack extension documentation warns that the protocol, function names, and implementation details may change. DuckDB’s FAQ says Quack is available in DuckDB v1.5.3 as beta and is not yet production-ready. That version statement reflects the cited documentation and may change; check the current official docs before relying on it.
For a tool built around Quack, protocol maturity matters: changes to Quack could affect compatibility or require changes in DuckPlus. The official documentation’s beta warning is a reason to assess the protocol’s status for your own workload, especially before adopting it for production-critical use.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Mac availability and support
The author’s article states that DuckPlus is Mac-only, with support for macOS 12 or later on Apple silicon and Intel. Current download availability, release version, and system requirements have not been established by the linked information here, so verify those details on the official DuckPlus download and project pages before installing or relying on that compatibility statement.
What to know about running queries
The author says Quack has no remote cancellation: pressing Cmd+. frees the DuckPlus window but does not stop a statement that is already running on the server. That distinction matters for long-running queries—closing or freeing the client-side window should not be assumed to cancel server-side work.
How to assess whether DuckPlus fits
DuckPlus is most relevant if you want a DuckDB-specific native interface, a workflow for local DuckDB files, or the described Quack-based connection to DuckDB servers. When evaluating it, weigh the author-reported editing and rendering behavior against Quack’s documented beta status, then confirm current macOS requirements and release details on the project’s official pages. No comparative measurements are provided to support a performance ranking against other SQL clients.
