A drive-by install is unwanted software installed on a device in connection with a visit to a malicious or compromised website. It may happen through code exploiting a software flaw, or through a misleading prompt that persuades someone to approve an installation without understanding what it does. The term describes the behavior, not one single technical method.
What “drive-by install” means
US-CERT describes a drive-by install as code installed—or requested for installation—simply because someone visits a malicious or compromised website. Depending on the browser and system, installation may happen automatically, or the site may use deceptive wording or repeated prompts to induce approval. US-CERT’s spyware overview is a legacy source, so its examples of specific older browser features should be read as historical context.
The related term drive-by download often emphasizes how a file is delivered, while drive-by install emphasizes software being set up on a device. The terms overlap in common usage; there is no universally fixed distinction. A 2020 paper describes drive-by downloads as unintended downloads that can exploit browser vulnerabilities and lead to malware installation. The paper’s definition and discussion help explain the relationship, but do not establish current prevalence.
How a drive-by install can happen
Exploiting a software vulnerability
A compromised or malicious page may deliver code that targets a flaw in a browser, plugin, application, or operating system. If the vulnerable software is exposed and the exploit works, an installation can follow without an informed approval. Keeping internet-facing software patched reduces this risk, though it cannot guarantee that every attack will be stopped.

Tricking someone into approving installation
A page may show a confusing or misleading request to install software or a browser component. Someone might click a button, but that does not necessarily mean they gave informed consent if the prompt hides what is being installed or pressures them to accept. Older US-CERT material describes Internet Explorer ActiveX prompts and repeated pop-ups; these are historical examples, not instructions for modern browsers.
Distinguishing it from an unwanted installer option
Casual descriptions sometimes blur drive-by installs with unwanted software bundled into another installer. Be specific about what happened: an exploit ran while browsing, a deceptive browser prompt led to approval, or an installer option was accepted without notice. These scenarios involve different triggers, even if each can leave a person with software they did not intend to install.

What can happen after installation
The effects depend on the installed code. A malicious component may change browser settings, download additional malware, expose sensitive information, steal credentials, or enable unauthorized activity on the device. These are possible consequences, not guaranteed results of every drive-by install. The 2020 paper discusses such potential impacts but does not provide a current estimate of how often each occurs.
Can visiting a website install malware without a click?
It can, if a website exploits a vulnerability and the affected software allows the code to run. But “drive-by install” does not always mean zero-click: a person may be prompted to accept something, and the prompt may be deceptive or coercive. The key question is whether the installation was unwanted or not knowingly approved, not simply whether a click occurred.

How to reduce the risk
- Install security updates. Keep the operating system, browser, and other internet-facing applications current so known vulnerabilities are patched.
- Decline unclear prompts. Do not approve unexpected requests to install software or browser components. Close the page or prompt if its purpose is unclear.
- Review installer options. Read each screen and check preselected options instead of clicking through defaults; bundled offers or settings changes may be easy to overlook.
- Use updated security software. Trusted antivirus or antispyware software can be one layer of defense, but it is not a guarantee that an installation will be prevented or detected.
- Consider content restrictions carefully. Restricting active content can reduce some risks, but may also prevent legitimate website features from working.
What to do if you suspect one occurred
- Stop interacting with the page. Do not accept further prompts or download additional files from it.
- Run a scan with updated security software. Follow the software’s instructions for isolating or removing anything it identifies.
- Check for unexpected changes. Review browser settings and recently installed applications for changes you did not make; remove suspicious items using the operating system’s normal controls.
- Protect accounts if sensitive information may be exposed. From a device you trust, change affected passwords and review account activity. The need for this step depends on what the installed code may have accessed.
