Waaseyaa’s queue worker could acknowledge a message even though no handler had processed it. The reported fix makes that case an explicit UnhandledQueueMessage failure, routing it through retry and failed-job handling instead of treating it as success. The account of the change was published on September 11, 2026; confirm the behavior in the Waaseyaa version you maintain, because no release or commit was identified.
Why an unhandled message could disappear
In the reported implementation, packages/queue pulls a delivery from its transport and checks the registered handlers. Each handler’s supports() method determines whether it can process the message. Previously, if every handler declined it, Worker::handleMessage() reached the end of its loop and returned normally.
That normal return mattered: processJob() treated it as successful handling and acknowledged the transport delivery. The message could then be gone without being processed, retried, or written to the failed-job repository. One route into this situation was that dispatch accepted any object, while the default handler roster knew how to run Job messages. Accepting an object for dispatch did not mean a worker had a compatible handler for it.

What the reported fix changes
After checking the handler roster, the updated handleMessage() throws a typed UnhandledQueueMessage exception if no handler supports the message. Instead of returning through the success path, the exception reaches processJob()’s existing catch and failure-handling machinery.

The account says the exception identifies the message class without including its payload. That makes the unsupported type visible while avoiding payload disclosure in the exception text.
Retry and exhaustion
The reported behavior uses the worker’s existing bounded retry and backoff policy: Job::$tries for jobs and WorkerOptions::$maxTries for other messages. The author reports a default of three attempts for non-Job messages. The precise backoff schedule is not specified, so check the maintained version’s configuration and implementation rather than assuming an interval.

Record failure before rejecting delivery
On retry exhaustion, the failed-job row is recorded before the transport delivery is rejected. If recording fails, rejection does not take place; the message remains reserved for lease recovery. This ordering matters because rejecting first could lose the delivery if the failed-job write then failed.

The source account does not identify a repository URL, commit, or tagged release, so it does not establish that every current installation includes this behavior. Verify the implementation and tests in the version you deploy. In review, follow the message from dispatch through handler selection, exception handling, failed-job persistence, and transport acknowledgement or rejection.
- Confirm that exhausting the handler roster raises a typed failure rather than returning normally.
- Trace that failure into the existing bounded retry path, including the applicable attempt setting for jobs versus other message objects.
- Check that exhausted failures are persisted before the delivery is rejected.
- Check what happens when the failed-job repository cannot record the failure: the delivery should remain available for recovery rather than be acknowledged or rejected as if persistence succeeded.
What the reported tests cover
The article describes a database-backed QueueServiceProviderUnhandledMessageTest using QueueServiceProvider, DbalQueue, DbalTransport, and DatabaseFailedJobRepository. It reports these outcomes:
- An unsupported message is released on its first attempt and durably recorded on the next, rather than acknowledged.
- A supported custom handler still runs once and is acknowledged normally.
- A provider-managed
Jobcontinues to run and be acknowledged normally.
A separate WorkerTest uses a stub failed-job repository whose record() method throws. The reported assertion is that the delivery stays in_progress for lease recovery. This is an induced failure in a test double, not evidence that a production database outage was reproduced.
The author reports 236 tests and 629 assertions for the Waaseyaa queue package unit and contract suite after the change. That count was not independently verified against CI or a repository.

What this means for dispatch and handlers
Broad dispatch and successful consumption are separate guarantees. A system may accept an arbitrary object for dispatch, but a worker can consume it only if a registered handler claims it. The reported change preserves broad dispatch while turning the missing-handler case into an explicit, recoverable failure instead of a silent acknowledgement.
