Your encoder can send a separate output to each platform, or send one output to a cloud relay that distributes it for you. The difference matters: local outputs use more of your upload capacity and can require more setup; a relay reduces the number of outbound feeds from your setup but adds a service and another network hop.
What happens when you multistream?
Your camera, screen, game, and audio are combined by an encoder into a live video signal. The encoder sends that signal over the internet to a platform’s ingest server. Twitch describes this broadcaster-to-platform delivery using RTMP in its Video Broadcast documentation.
For multistreaming, the signal is delivered to several destinations instead of one. YouTube describes both local encoding and cloud-service encoding as options in its guide to streaming across platforms.
- Local distribution: Your encoder or related software sends outputs directly to each platform.
- Cloud distribution: Your encoder sends one stream to a relay service, which forwards it to the platforms you select.
Both approaches send the same program to separate platform audiences. Multistreaming alone does not create a shared chat or combine viewers into one audience.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Local outputs and cloud relays compared
| Consideration | Local outputs | Cloud relay |
|---|---|---|
| Upload capacity | Plan for the combined bitrate of the outputs sent from your setup. | Your setup sends one feed to the relay, which distributes it onward, according to YouTube’s description of cloud encoding. |
| Computer and encoder | More outputs add setup demands; processing load depends on whether the system makes separate encodes or reuses an encode. | Distribution happens at the relay. YouTube presents cloud encoding as an option for simpler setup or a slower or older computer. |
| Configuration and control | Separate outputs can support destination-specific settings, with added configuration work. | Can simplify distribution, but destination support, quality options, limits, and settings depend on the service and plan. |
| Latency | No relay hop, though each destination still processes the stream. | Adds a network hop. Restream says its own relay adds under 2 seconds, independent of channel count; destination platforms may add delay too. This is a Restream-specific claim, not a general guarantee. See its delay explanation. |
| Reliability and rules | Requires working local software, a stable connection, correctly configured destinations, and compliance with each platform’s rules. | Also depends on the connection to the relay, the service’s operation and configuration, destination availability, and platform rules. |
| Cost and limits | Depends on your existing setup and any software or hardware you choose. | Service pricing, destination caps, and plan features vary; check current terms before choosing. |
How much upload speed does multistreaming need?
For local outputs, add the target bitrates
Estimate the total outbound bitrate by adding the bitrate for every output your computer sends. For example, YouTube’s guidance uses 6 Mbps plus 4 Mbps, for a combined target of 10 Mbps. It advises aiming for upload speed 1.5 to 2 times that total for stability, which works out to 15–20 Mbps in that example. This is YouTube guidance, not a guarantee for every network or platform.
Leave headroom for normal network variation and other upload activity. A speed test should reflect typical audio and video movement, rather than an idle connection; YouTube recommends testing under realistic conditions in its cross-platform streaming guide.

For a cloud relay, distinguish your feed from the forwarded outputs
In the relay model, your connection carries one stream to the service; the relay handles forwarding to selected platforms. That can reduce your outbound upload requirement compared with sending several independent feeds from home, but the feed to the relay still needs a stable connection at its configured bitrate.
Restream’s 2024 help guidance says its service needs at least 10 Mbps and recommends 25 Mbps or higher, especially for Full HD. Those are Restream-specific recommendations, not universal multistreaming requirements. See Restream’s bandwidth guidance.

Multistreaming is not transcoding
Multistreaming distributes a program to multiple platforms. Transcoding takes a source feed and converts it into multiple versions—often with different resolutions, frame rates, or bitrates—so viewers can choose a quality suited to their device or connection. OBS Project explains the distinction in its transcoding article. Whether a platform provides those quality options depends on that platform; availability is not guaranteed simply because you multistream.
Destination settings are not automatically interchangeable. Check each platform’s current encoder guidance for supported resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS for YouTube Live in its encoder settings guide.

Preflight checklist before going live
- Confirm account eligibility and live access. YouTube says a channel must be verified and live streaming enabled. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours after the request, according to its cross-platform guide.
- Set up every destination. Make sure each account is active and eligible to receive a live stream. Review each platform’s current rules and any agreements that affect your eligibility.
- Enter the correct ingest details. Use each destination’s server or ingest URL and stream key, unless your encoder or service handles them. Treat stream keys as credentials: do not share or publish them.
- Match settings to each platform. Check the current resolution, frame-rate, bitrate, and protocol requirements for every destination rather than assuming one profile fits all.
- Test the full path. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test, check audio and video, and confirm the stream reaches every intended destination before announcing a live broadcast.
- Check platform policy. Twitch permits simulcasting under its guidelines, but says the Twitch experience must not be degraded and its rules restrict directing Twitch viewers to another live stream in specified ways. Read the current Twitch Simulcasting Guidelines FAQ and check whether an agreement changes your eligibility.
- Review content rights. Having technical permission to send a stream does not grant rights to its music, video, or other content. Make sure the material is permitted on every destination and comply with each platform’s copyright and content rules.
Which approach should you choose?
Choose local outputs when control is the priority
Local distribution is a reasonable fit if your connection has enough stable upload capacity for the sum of the target bitrates, your computer can handle the encoder setup, and you want to tune outputs for individual destinations. The trade-off is more configuration and greater demand on your local connection.
Choose a cloud relay when simpler distribution matters
A relay is worth considering if sending several feeds from your location is impractical or you prefer to configure destinations through a service. Check its supported platforms, plan limits, quality handling, and latency before relying on it. It does not remove the need for a stable connection from your encoder to the relay or for destination-specific compliance.
