Mixed reality on the Meta Quest 3 combines a live, full-color camera view of your surroundings with computer-rendered graphics. The headset uses depth and room information to help place virtual objects in the space, while its operating system composites the camera view and app content into what you see. The result is camera-mediated mixed reality—not a transparent view through the headset.
How does mixed reality work on the Meta Quest 3?
It works as a sequence of related systems: cameras capture the room, the operating system supplies a passthrough layer, and the compositor combines that layer with the app’s graphics. Depth estimation, room understanding and spatial anchors can then help virtual content relate to physical surroundings. The specific effects depend on the app and the capabilities it uses.
1. Cameras capture the room
The Meta Quest 3 uses stereo cameras to capture the physical environment and show it inside the headset in real time and in full color. Because the view comes from cameras and is displayed on headset screens, you see a live camera-derived representation of the room rather than looking directly through transparent lenses. 2. The operating system combines passthrough and graphics
Passthrough is not simply a video image that every app must draw on its own. Meta’s native implementation documentation describes a system service that renders passthrough as a separate layer for the XR Compositor. An app submits a special placeholder layer; the system provides the passthrough rendition and combines it with the app’s rendered content. 3. Depth helps virtual objects sit in front of or behind real ones
Depth estimation helps the system understand how far away physical surfaces are. An app can use that information so a real object visually covers a virtual object when it should be in front of it. This front-to-back effect is called occlusion. It changes what you see; it does not make virtual objects physically present or tangible.
4. Room understanding gives apps environmental context
Space Setup uses cameras and depth sensors to create a 3D scan of the surroundings. Meta’s Scene API can identify room elements such as floors, ceilings and doors, giving apps information they can use to build interactions around the space. 5. Spatial anchors can help preserve placement
Spatial Anchors can help an app maintain a virtual object’s position in the room during a session and, where implemented, between sessions. That lets an experience return to a placement in the space instead of treating each view as an unrelated overlay. Persistence depends on the app’s implementation and the system capabilities it uses.
What mixed reality can—and cannot—do
- It can blend virtual content with a camera view of the room. Depth-based occlusion can make an object appear behind a physical surface, and room understanding can give an app context about its surroundings.
- It is not optical see-through. Your view of the physical world is captured by cameras and displayed in the headset.
- Occlusion is visual, not physical. A virtual object may appear behind a real one, but it cannot be touched as though it were actually there.
- System passthrough is different from raw camera access. Meta says standard passthrough is composited by the operating system without giving the app the environmental images or video. Processing raw camera frames for computer vision uses a separate access path subject to permissions and policy requirements. See Meta’s Passthrough and implementation documentation.
Comfort, visibility and safety limits
Passthrough latency and visual quality can vary. Meta advises developers not to require users to read fine text or make precise movements in the real world based on the passthrough image. The camera view is useful for keeping the room visible during an experience, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed substitute for direct vision.

Horizon OS also supports stationary and user-traced roomscale boundaries. Passthrough can appear as a person approaches the edge of a boundary, helping maintain awareness of the surrounding space. Follow the boundary cues and keep the physical area clear when using the headset.
What Meta has reported about Quest 3 passthrough
In a developer announcement published September 28, 2023, Meta said Quest 3 passthrough delivered 10 times more pixels than Quest 2. That is Meta’s own comparison, not an independent benchmark. In the same announcement, Meta reported that mindfulness app TRIPP’s seven-day average daily active users increased by 31% after it incorporated passthrough-based features. This is a reported example; it does not establish that passthrough alone caused the increase. Meta’s 2023 announcement also quotes Cubism creator Thomas Van Bouwel saying passthrough and hand tracking fit the game’s format and that mixed reality seemed to reduce onboarding friction by letting new players stay connected to their environment.

What to look for when comparing Quest 3 mixed-reality apps
Mixed-reality apps can use the headset’s capabilities in different ways. To understand how an experience relates to your room, check whether it relies on:
- Passthrough as a background view of the physical environment.
- Depth-based occlusion so real surfaces can appear in front of virtual objects.
- Room understanding to use features such as floors, doors or ceilings.
- Spatial Anchors to help keep virtual objects in place across time or sessions.
These are useful capability distinctions, not a measured ranking of apps. A feature’s presence also does not guarantee a particular result: the app needs to implement it.
