A flash memory cache is a faster flash-storage tier—usually an SSD—that keeps selected data from a slower storage device so later requests can be served more quickly. It is a performance layer, not automatically extra storage capacity, and its benefit depends on how the system handles reads and writes and whether your workload reuses cached data.

What is flash memory cache?

In storage systems, flash memory cache usually means an SSD or other flash device used as a faster tier in front of a larger, slower backing store, such as an HDD array. The cache holds selected data; the backing store remains the primary location for the data. Linux device-mapper, for example, describes migrating data dynamically from a block device such as a hard disk to a smaller, faster device such as an SSD (Linux kernel documentation).

The phrase can also refer to other components. An SSD has its own device-level write cache, and an operating system may keep file data in system memory. Those are related caching mechanisms, but they are not the same as an SSD used as a storage-tier cache.

How does SSD caching work?

Read cache: hits, misses, and warm-up

When an application requests data, the storage system checks whether a copy is available in the flash cache. A cache hit means the data is there and can be returned from flash. On a cache miss, the system retrieves it from the backing device; the system may then retain it in the cache for a later request.

A cache may need time to warm up as frequently accessed data is identified. Replacement rules decide which entries remain when space is needed. Synology’s DSM 7.1 SSD Cache White Paper describes an LRU (least recently used) policy: older, less recently used blocks can be replaced by newer ones. If the frequently accessed data changes, the cache may need another warm-up period (Synology DSM 7.1 SSD Cache White Paper).

Write cache: the policy determines the path

Write caching can work in different ways. Microsoft defines two main types of write cache—write-back and write-through—and their behavior is not interchangeable (Microsoft Learn: Querying for the Write Cache Property).

  • Brand Yourself - Brand the flash drive with your company's name and provide company's overview, policies, etc. to the newly joined employees or your customers
  • Write-back: The cache accepts a write first and the backing device is updated later. This can improve write performance, but a period exists when acknowledged data may not yet have reached the backing media.
  • Write-through: The system writes to the cache and backing media together. Microsoft notes that this does not improve write performance, though the cached copy may make a later read faster.

These terms describe a cache policy. They are distinct from a write-through request that tells a device to bypass or flush a cache.

Does an SSD cache make a hard drive faster?

It can make repeated access to cached data faster, but it does not turn the hard drive itself into an SSD. A cache helps most when the workload repeatedly requests data that fits in the cache. If requests rarely reuse data, many accesses may miss and still come from the slower backing device.

Results also depend on the storage platform and its policy. In Azure Local and Windows Server cluster storage pools, Microsoft documents write caching for NVMe devices in all-flash deployments, and read/write caching when SSDs are used with rotating disks. In that implementation, reads from SSD capacity drives are generally served directly from those drives, while HDD reads may benefit from flash because hard disks incur rotating-disk seek delays. These are platform-specific behaviors, not rules for every NAS or server (Microsoft Learn: Understanding the storage pool cache in Azure Local and Windows Server clusters).

What are the trade-offs of flash memory cache?

Write-back and data protection

With write-back, a system may acknowledge a write while the newest copy is still in cache and has not been written to the backing media. If power fails, data in a device write cache without battery backup can be lost, Microsoft warns. Storage systems may offer other protections, but their behavior depends on the product; check the platform documentation before relying on write-back for important data.

Workload fit and SSD endurance

Cache suitability depends on access patterns, cache capacity, and the SSDs the platform supports. For an SSD cache, Synology identifies drive writes per day (DWPD) as an endurance measure and calls attention to sustained random IOPS and changes in latency as performance-consistency considerations. These are selection factors, not universal minimum specifications (Synology: Important considerations when creating SSD cache).

Compatibility is platform-specific: a drive that works in one NAS or server is not necessarily supported in another. Consult the storage system’s compatibility guidance and cache documentation, and match the device to the workload rather than assuming any SSD will work.

Is SSD cache the same as an SSD’s internal cache?

No. The names sound similar, but they describe different layers:

  • Storage-level SSD cache: Flash storage used as a faster tier for data held on a slower backing device or pool.
  • Device write cache: A buffer within a storage device that holds writes before they are committed to nonvolatile media. Its policy and protection vary by device and system.
  • System file cache: File data held in system memory to avoid going to disk for every operation. Microsoft describes this behavior for Windows (Microsoft Learn: File Caching).

When evaluating a performance claim, identify which of these layers is meant. A system-memory file cache, an SSD’s internal write buffer, and an SSD tier in front of an HDD solve different problems and have different limits.
