A phone with one microphone can reduce background noise by processing the combined signal of your voice and surrounding sounds. It estimates which parts are noise and lowers them while preserving speech. Because it has no second microphone signal to compare, it cannot use microphone-array beamforming, and it may struggle when noise changes quickly or overlaps your words.
How does noise reduction work with one microphone?
- Capture: The microphone converts your voice and nearby sounds—such as room noise, wind, or a fan—into one combined audio signal.
- Analyze: Processing looks for patterns that are more likely to be noise than speech. Traditional single-channel methods can estimate steady or repetitive noise; learned methods may recognize a broader range. The exact approach depends on the phone’s hardware and software.
- Reduce: The system attenuates the estimated noise while trying to retain speech cues. If suppression is too aggressive, your voice can sound muffled, choppy, or artificial.
Android Developers describes noise suppression as an audio pre-processor that removes background noise from captured audio. Its NoiseSuppressor API reference describes a platform effect, not a guarantee that every Android phone or call app offers the same control or behavior.
What can one microphone remove—and what is harder?
A second microphone is not required for noise reduction. Qualcomm says single-channel noise reduction can suppress stationary noise, and describes AI-based processing that can track and reduce noise using one microphone. In Qualcomm’s 2021 technical discussion, stationary-noise suppression is described as reaching up to 10 dB. That is a vendor-reported figure for the technique, not a universal rating or an independent test of smartphones.
Steady or repetitive sounds, such as a fan or HVAC hum, are generally easier to estimate than rapidly changing sounds. Music, nearby conversation, clicks, and wind can be harder to suppress—especially when they overlap speech. Reducing them may also damage voice quality, so no phone can be assumed to eliminate a particular sound in every call.

- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
How does a single microphone compare with a microphone array?
With one microphone, the processor has a single channel and cannot compare spatial differences between separate microphone signals. A microphone array can use those differences to form a directional pickup pattern, helping separate sound by direction. Array processing can also be combined with single-channel and machine-learning techniques. Qualcomm recommends two-microphone arrays with fixed beamformers for close-talk headsets.
That does not mean every multi-microphone phone will outperform every single-microphone phone in every situation. Results depend on microphone placement, call mode, and the processing implementation, as well as the type of noise.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
Is noise reduction the same as echo cancellation?
No. Noise suppression reduces background sound in the microphone’s captured signal. Acoustic echo cancellation addresses a different problem: audio the phone plays through its speaker can leak back into the microphone, so the system uses the sent audio as a reference to reduce that echo. Android documents AcousticEchoCanceler separately from noise suppression and notes that the effects are often used together. Gain control is another distinct process that can help keep voice levels consistent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to try if callers hear too much background noise
- Check that the call app and phone are using the intended call mode; available controls and behavior vary by device and app.
- Make sure the microphone opening is not covered or obstructed.
- If the built-in microphone still picks up too much noise, consider a close-talk headset with a boom microphone. It changes the sound source the call captures; it does not improve the phone’s built-in microphone. Headset results and phone compatibility vary.
Android exposes noise-suppression and echo-cancellation APIs, but their availability and activation can depend on the device and audio session. Those developer-facing APIs do not establish that every Android phone has a user-accessible switch.
