An AI coding assistant uses your request and relevant project context to generate code or propose an action. In an agent workflow, a surrounding program—often called a harness—can carry out actions such as reading files, editing code, and running commands. The results may be sent back to the model for another attempt. Whether tests are written, run, or both depends on the product and its current mode; a test result is evidence to review, not a guarantee that the code is correct.
How an AI coding assistant turns a request into code
- It gathers the request and context. You describe the change or question. Depending on the product, the assistant may also receive relevant files, code snippets, repository information, or project instructions. That context helps shape what the model produces. GitHub describes this as combining the task and contextual information in a prompt for a large language model.
- The model generates an answer or requests an action. It can return code or an explanation. In an agent-enabled workflow, it may instead ask the surrounding application to use an available tool—for example, to inspect a file or run a command. The model itself does not automatically have access to every file or system on your computer.
- The harness performs permitted actions. The application mediating the model decides which tools are available and applies the relevant permissions. For example, GitHub documents its cloud agent running tests and linters in an ephemeral, firewalled environment, while OpenAI’s Codex CLI documentation describes inspecting and editing a local repository and running tools installed on the user’s machine. These are examples of different product setups, not capabilities every assistant shares.
- Tool results can start another model turn. The harness can return command output, errors, or test results to the model, which may then suggest or attempt a change. OpenAI describes the cycle in its explanation of the Codex agent loop: tool output is appended to the prompt and supplied to the model again. The model can use that information to continue, but it may misunderstand a failure or make an ineffective change.
- A person checks the work. Review the proposed edits and the evidence for them. GitHub explicitly places responsibility for reviewing and validating Copilot cloud agent responses on the user.
Does it write tests, run tests, or both?
“Testing” can refer to different activities. A chat assistant might generate test code without executing it. An agent might run an existing test suite or linter, and some workflows can do both. Check the session’s output or activity log to see which actually occurred.

How to tell what happened in your session
- Look for a visible diff or list of changed files to confirm whether the assistant edited code or only suggested it.
- Check the transcript or activity log for test commands and their output. A generated test, a requested test run, and a completed test run are different events.
- Note the execution environment: a local workspace and a hosted, isolated environment may have different files, dependencies, permissions, or network access.
- Read failures as evidence to investigate. A failing test can expose a bug, a mismatch in assumptions, or an environment problem; it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Compare the tests with the change you wanted. A suite can pass while missing an important case.
What a passing test result can—and cannot—prove
A passing result means the tests that ran completed successfully in the environment where they ran. Its value depends on the tests’ coverage, setup, and relevance to the requested behavior. It is not proof that the code is secure, handles every edge case, or works in every deployment environment. Review the code and test output, and use your normal review and validation process before relying on a change.
That caution is consistent with a limited empirical result: the 2024 study Assessing AI-Based Code Assistants in Method Generation Tasks reported in its abstract that the four assistants compared in method-generation tasks “rarely generate ready-to-use correct code.” This finding is about that study’s assistants and task scope; it is not a current, universal error rate for all coding assistants.

Why assistants behave differently
The label “AI coding assistant” covers more than one workflow. A suggestion-only tool may propose a snippet for you to apply, while an agent may edit files and run commands if its tools and permissions allow it. The amount of project context, the execution location, and the visibility of changes and results also vary. To understand a particular product or mode, check what context it receives, what actions it can take, where those actions run, and what evidence it shows you.
