A virus signature file is a set of threat-identification data that antivirus software uses to help recognize known malware. The file is not the antivirus program itself: the program’s detection engine uses that data alongside other methods to assess files and activity.
What is a virus signature file?
A virus signature file contains information an antivirus product can use to identify known threats or threat patterns. Antivirus software consults the data while checking files or other content. The product, not the signature file, performs the scan and any action that follows, such as quarantining or removing a detected threat.
Vendors do not all use the same terminology. One product may call its threat data “signatures,” another “definitions.” Microsoft uses “security intelligence” for Microsoft Defender in Windows. Microsoft Support describes it this way: “Security intelligence (sometimes referred to as definitions) are files that contain information about the latest threats that could infect your device.” Microsoft Support: Virus and Threat Protection in the Windows Security App.
What does a signature file do?
It gives antivirus software information it can use to recognize threats already represented in its threat data. When scanned content matches information the product recognizes, the software can flag it for further action. The exact formats and matching methods vary; it is not accurate to assume every product simply compares files byte for byte.

Signatures are one detection method, not a promise that every threat will be found. Microsoft describes Defender as using additional approaches, including cloud-delivered intelligence, machine learning, anomaly detection, and behavior monitoring. These methods can help identify suspicious activity that a signature match alone may not capture, but no single method guarantees detection of every threat. Is a virus signature file the same as antivirus software?
No. The signature or definition file is threat data; the antivirus engine is software that processes that data and applies detection logic. The complete antivirus product may also include other detection methods, update mechanisms, controls, and tools for responding to threats. Updating a signature file refreshes threat information; it does not replace or amount to updating the entire product.

How do you update virus definitions?
Use the update feature in the antivirus product you have installed. For Microsoft Defender on Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft says security intelligence downloads automatically as part of Windows Update. To check manually, open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection updates > Check for updates. Labels or available controls can vary with Windows version and device management.

- Check the update status in your own antivirus app and keep its protection and updates enabled.
- For Defender on Windows, check the Protection updates screen in Windows Security.
- Do not download signature files from unofficial sites; use the product’s built-in update process or its vendor’s documented channel.
Does antivirus software use signatures to detect viruses?
Many antivirus products use signature-like threat data, but signatures are only part of modern protection. Terminology, update practices, and detection techniques differ by vendor. The Microsoft documentation cited here explains Defender on Windows; it does not establish how every antivirus product stores signatures or identifies threats.
