How you open an HP OMEN case depends on the model. For the OMEN by HP Obelisk 875-0xx and 870-xxx desktops, press the rear release button, push the upper part of the access panel slightly toward the chassis, and lift the panel away. Other OMEN models use different procedures, so identify your exact product number and follow its matching HP instructions before removing a panel.
Before opening the case
- Shut down the PC and disconnect it from its power source.
- Move it to a clear, flat, stable work surface on a non-carpeted floor. HP recommends an anti-static wrist strap as an electrostatic-discharge precaution for the cited Obelisk servicing.
- Check the instructions for your exact model. HP says a Phillips or flathead screwdriver may be needed for Obelisk servicing, depending on the computer model; do not assume every OMEN case requires one.
- Consult your model’s warranty terms before servicing the computer.
HP’s Obelisk hard-drive replacement instructions cover the 875-0xx and 870-xxx desktop ranges. They are not universal instructions for OMEN towers.
Open an OMEN Obelisk 875-0xx or 870-xxx
- Press the release button at the rear of the tower.
- Grasp the access panel at its upper sides and push it slightly toward the chassis.
- Lift the panel up and away, then set it aside gently.
HP describes this as the way to remove the side access panel for internal component service. If your case does not match these steps, stop and check the guide for your product number rather than forcing the panel.

Close the Obelisk case
- Align the access panel with the chassis and lower it into the bottom of the chassis.
- Push the panel toward the chassis.
- Press each side until it clicks.
Why other OMEN models may open differently
HP’s OMEN 40L top-fan instructions describe a different sequence: remove the glass front bezel and left side access panel, then push the top cover forward from the rear and lift it off. Those are 40L-specific directions for accessing the top fan, not a general method for removing panels from other OMEN desktops.

Find the right instructions for your PC
Locate your computer’s product number and use it to find the matching support guide on HP’s support site. Compare the model listed in the guide with your PC before removing a panel. The Obelisk and 40L procedures above show why the OMEN name alone is not enough to determine how a case opens.
