To set up a game controller on a Windows PC, connect it with a compatible USB data cable or pair it over Bluetooth if both the controller and PC support that connection. Windows can usually detect connected hardware automatically. Then check the game’s own controller settings: Windows recognizing a controller does not mean every game supports it.
Choose USB or Bluetooth
The right connection depends on the controller model, the PC’s available connections, and the game you want to play. A compatible USB data cable is the simplest route when you have one; Bluetooth avoids a cable but requires Bluetooth on the PC and a controller that supports it.

There is no universal rule that one method works better for every controller or game. Check the controller maker’s instructions for its connection requirements and pairing controls.

Connect a controller by USB
- Connect the controller to the PC using a compatible USB data cable. A charging-only cable may not transfer data, and not every cable fits every controller.
- Wait for Windows to detect the device and install what it needs. Microsoft says, “Windows usually detects and installs new hardware automatically when you connect it.”
- If Windows does not detect it, try the device-add flow. In Windows 11, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device. In Windows 10, open Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device. Follow the prompts; the exact flow can vary with device type and Windows updates.
- If the controller still does not appear, check that the cable and port work, connect directly to the PC rather than through an unnecessary hub, and restart Windows. Consult the controller maker’s support information for model-specific driver or connection requirements.
Pair a controller over Bluetooth
Bluetooth setup requires a Bluetooth-capable PC and a controller that supports Bluetooth. If your PC does not have Bluetooth, a USB Bluetooth adapter can add it, provided the adapter and controller support a compatible connection.

- Turn on Bluetooth on the PC. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices. You can also use the taskbar’s Bluetooth quick setting; its layout differs between versions.
- Put the controller into pairing mode. Use the button sequence in the controller’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page. Pairing steps vary by model, so do not assume one controller’s sequence applies to another.
- Add the controller in Windows. In Windows 11, go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > Add device, choose the device type, and select the controller when it appears. In Windows 10, go to Settings > Devices > Bluetooth & other devices > Add Bluetooth or other device, choose Bluetooth, and select the controller.
- Complete any prompts. Once paired, the controller should reconnect automatically when Bluetooth is on and the devices are in range.
Check whether Windows and the game recognize the controller
First confirm that Windows shows the controller as connected. Then open the game and check its control or input settings. Controller compatibility is partly a Windows connection issue and partly a game-support issue: a successful connection does not guarantee the game accepts that controller or connection method.
For games on Steam
Steam’s Big Picture mode is available on Windows 10 or newer. Valve lists official Microsoft Xbox controllers, Sony DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro controllers, and Steam Controllers among the controller types it supports. Valve says third-party controllers often work but are not officially supported.

Steam labels some games Full Controller Support and others Partial Controller Support. With partial support, you may still need a mouse or keyboard for some setup or interface tasks. These Steam labels describe support for Steam titles; they do not determine whether a game from another store supports a controller.

For example, Valve’s Steam Link support information lists the Xbox Series X controller as supported over USB but not Bluetooth for that Steam Link scenario. That limitation is specific to Steam Link, not a general Windows restriction.

Troubleshoot Bluetooth pairing
If Windows cannot find or connect to the controller, work through these checks:
- Confirm Bluetooth is enabled on the PC and that the controller is in its model-specific pairing mode.
- Move the controller closer to the PC and check that it is charged or has fresh batteries.
- Turn the controller off and on, then try pairing again.
- If Windows lists the controller but it will not connect, remove it from the Bluetooth device list and add it again.
- On Windows 11, try Microsoft’s automated Bluetooth troubleshooter in the Get Help app.
- If Bluetooth is missing from Settings, check the PC specifications and whether its Bluetooth adapter driver is installed.
Microsoft identifies pairing mode, range, low charge, and configuration, driver, service, or update problems as possible causes of Bluetooth connection failures. Nearby unshielded USB 3.0 devices can also interfere with Bluetooth in some situations.

If a controller pairs but does not work in a game
Check whether the game supports controller input and inspect its input settings. If the game is on Steam, its controller-support label can clarify whether a mouse or keyboard may still be needed for some tasks. Do not assume that Windows pairing or Steam support guarantees compatibility in every game or over every connection method.

The setup paths above cover both versions, though the Settings labels differ. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but they no longer receive Microsoft’s free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes.
