For a straightforward U.S. federal return, start by checking whether you qualify for either provider’s free product. If your return includes investments, self-employment income, rental income, itemized deductions, or other schedules, first confirm that the product you’re considering supports every form you need. Then compare the federal and state filing totals for your exact situation, including any paid upgrade or support you want. The available product information does not establish one provider as universally cheaper, easier, or more accurate.
How the two services compare
The right choice depends on your forms, free-filing eligibility, state return, and preference for assistance. Product details and prices can change, so treat this as a way to narrow your options—not a live quote or a quality ranking.
| What to compare | TurboTax | TaxSlayer |
|---|---|---|
| Free product | Free Edition is for qualifying simple Form 1040 returns. TurboTax gives examples of eligible income, deductions, and credits, and lists situations it excludes. | Simply Free includes one federal return and has age, income, credit, and deduction restrictions. |
| Price information | Online and mobile prices depend on tax situation, selected product, and filing date. Most paid offerings let users prepare before paying. | Prices vary with tax situation, support needs, coupons, and promotions. |
| Current comparable checkout total | Check the displayed price for your return, including any state filing or add-ons. | Check the displayed price for the same return, including any state filing or add-ons. |
TaxSlayer’s competitor comparison data is dated May 8, 2026, and TaxSlayer says it may be incomplete or out of date. It can provide orientation, but it is not a reliable substitute for checking each provider’s current terms and checkout price.

TurboTax Free Edition
TurboTax describes Free Edition as an option for qualifying simple Form 1040 returns. Its examples of items that may be included are W-2 income, the standard deduction, specified credits, student-loan interest, and certain Schedule 1-A deductions. It lists itemized deductions, unemployment income, business or 1099-NEC income, stock or cryptocurrency sales, and rental income among situations not covered by Free Edition.

TaxSlayer Simply Free
TaxSlayer says Simply Free includes one federal return, but eligibility is subject to age, income, credit, and deduction restrictions. The company says less than a majority of U.S. taxpayers may qualify. Its published description does not establish that every return type or situation is eligible, so review the live rules before counting on the free offer.

IRS Free File is a separate route
For the 2026 filing season, the IRS says taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less may qualify for Guided Tax through IRS Free File. That is the program’s income threshold; each participating partner can also impose additional eligibility requirements. TaxSlayer is one of the eight partners listed by the IRS. Some partners include a free state return, subject to the partner’s terms, and the IRS says Free File providers cannot upsell additional services.
Recommended Free Tools
IRS Free File is distinct from a provider’s own free product: check the IRS program and partner criteria separately rather than assuming that eligibility for one means eligibility for the other.

How to choose based on your tax situation
If your return is simple
Check whether your income, deductions, and credits meet each provider’s free-product rules. A return that seems simple may still include an item or form that moves it outside a free product’s limits. If your 2025 AGI is within the IRS threshold, check the IRS Free File partner options as well.
If you have business, investment, rental, or itemized-deduction forms
Identify every form and schedule required by your documents, then compare that list with the current supported-form information for the specific product you would use. TurboTax explicitly excludes several of these situations from Free Edition; that does not, by itself, establish which paid product from either provider is right for your return.
If you want additional help
Decide what kind of assistance you value and whether it is included or costs extra in the product you are considering. The available information does not provide an independent, controlled comparison of the providers’ support quality, so choose based on the current service details and your own needs rather than an assumed quality ranking.
How to compare the actual cost
- Use the same tax situation for both. Gather the documents and list the forms, schedules, and state returns you need.
- Check eligibility and form support. Confirm whether the relevant free or paid product covers your situation before comparing prices.
- Include the full filing setup. Account for federal and state filing, upgrades required for your forms, optional support, and any add-ons you choose.
- Compare the displayed checkout totals. Promotions, coupons, filing date, and support choices can affect the price. Compare the total for the same return rather than relying on a headline price or static comparison page.
What the available comparisons do—and don’t—show
Official product information can clarify eligibility boundaries and pricing conditions, but it does not settle which service is easier to use, more accurate, or more likely to maximize a refund. Nor does it provide an apples-to-apples current price for a particular taxpayer. Those choices require checking the live product terms and totals for your own return.
