A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, so the Moon’s shadow falls on Earth. A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, so Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. The key practical difference: a lunar eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye, while a solar eclipse requires proper eye protection except during the brief total phase of a total eclipse.

How a solar eclipse differs from a lunar eclipse

Question Solar eclipse Lunar eclipse
What lines up? The Moon passes between the Sun and Earth. Earth is between the Sun and Moon.
Whose shadow falls where? The Moon’s shadow falls on Earth. Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon.
Where can you see it? From places reached by the Moon’s shadow. The total phase is visible only along the path of totality. From the night side of Earth wherever the Moon is above the horizon during the event.
Is direct naked-eye viewing safe? Only during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse. All partial phases and every annular eclipse require safe solar viewing protection. Yes, during every type and stage.

A solar eclipse happens at new Moon, when the Moon is between Earth and the Sun. A lunar eclipse happens at full Moon. The alignments do not produce an eclipse at every new or full Moon; NASA’s overview of eclipse types explains how the different shadow alignments create the events.

What types of solar and lunar eclipses are there?

Solar eclipse types

  • Total: The Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face for observers within the path of totality.
  • Annular: The Moon appears smaller than the Sun and does not cover it completely, leaving a bright ring visible. Because some of the Sun remains exposed, an annular eclipse must be viewed with solar protection throughout.
  • Partial: The Moon covers only part of the Sun. There is no totality during a partial eclipse.
  • Hybrid: The eclipse appears total from some locations and annular from others as the Moon’s shadow moves over Earth’s curved surface.

Lunar eclipse types

  • Total: Earth’s shadow covers the Moon. The Moon may look red during some total lunar eclipses.
  • Partial: Only part of the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow.
  • Penumbral: The Moon passes through the lighter outer part of Earth’s shadow and dims.

These categories describe what an observer sees as the shadows cross the Sun or Moon; they do not change the basic alignment that defines each eclipse. NASA describes the categories in its solar eclipse types guide and its eclipse overview.

Why a solar eclipse has a narrower viewing area

The Moon’s shadow covers only a limited area of Earth. During a total solar eclipse, only observers inside the path of totality see the Sun fully covered. Someone outside that path may see a partial eclipse, while another location sees totality at the same time. The total-eclipse path is therefore location-dependent, as NASA explains in its solar and lunar eclipse comparison.

  • A COMFORTABLE FIT - These certified eclipse glasses are designed for teens and adults, featuring convenient crease lines on both sides for an easy, secure fit.
  • 2023 ANNULAR AND 2024 TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSES - On October 14th 2023, an annular eclipse (when the sun forms a ring around the moon) will cross the United States from Oregon to Texas. We will then experience a once-in-a-generation Total Solar Eclipse on April 8th 2024 - the only USA total eclipse until August 23rd, 2044. You will be amazed as the moon completely blocks the sun during Totality, which lasts but mere minutes. Soluna Glasses are what you need to safely view both of these eclipses.

A lunar eclipse is visible across a much broader area: anyone on Earth’s night side who has the Moon above the horizon during the event can watch it. Cloud cover and the Moon’s position still affect whether it is visible from a particular spot.

How to watch an eclipse without risking your eyes

Watching a lunar eclipse

You can look at the Moon directly with unprotected eyes throughout a lunar eclipse. No special viewer is needed.

Watching a solar eclipse

Never look directly at the Sun during a partial phase, including the partial phases before and after totality. Ordinary sunglasses—even very dark ones—do not provide safe solar viewing. Use an undamaged solar viewer that complies with ISO 12312-2, and follow NASA’s eclipse viewing safety guidance.

Unaided viewing is safe only during the brief total phase of a total solar eclipse, when the Moon completely covers the Sun’s bright face. Put your solar viewer back on as soon as any bright part of the Sun reappears. This exception does not apply to partial, annular, or hybrid eclipse viewing from a location where the Sun is not fully covered.

Using cameras, binoculars, or telescopes

Eclipse glasses do not make it safe to look at the Sun through a camera, binoculars, or telescope. Magnifying optics can concentrate sunlight and damage eyes or the viewer. Use a compatible special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optical equipment; seek expert help before using filters with optics.

Viewing by projection

A pinhole projector lets you view an image of a partially eclipsed Sun indirectly. Look at the projected image on a surface, never through the pinhole toward the Sun.

Where to check for a specific eclipse

Visibility depends on the event’s path and your location, so check an event-specific map close to the date rather than assuming an eclipse will be visible where you live. NASA’s page for the August 12, 2026 total solar eclipse lists visibility across parts of Russia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and nearby areas; consult that page for current path details and local circumstances.
