Quordle is a word puzzle in which one five-letter guess gives clues for four separate hidden words. Enter a valid word, submit it, and use each board’s green, yellow, and gray feedback to narrow its own answer. The number of guesses depends on the mode: the official game listing shows nine for Classic, eight for Extreme, and twelve for Chill.
How to play Quordle
The basic loop is the same across the four boards: enter one five-letter word, then inspect the clues on each board independently. A guess that is useful on one grid may reveal something different—or nothing—on another.
- Choose a mode. Check its displayed attempt limit before starting. The official listing names Classic, Extreme, Chill, Sequence, and Rescue; it gives different limits for some modes. See the Quordle game listing.
- Enter a five-letter word. Type with a physical keyboard or use the on-screen keyboard. The word must be accepted by the game.
- Submit the guess. Press Enter. Before submission, use Backspace to remove a letter if needed.
- Read the result on every board. Interpret the colors separately for each grid, then use those clues to plan another guess.
- Continue until all four answers are solved or you run out of attempts. In Sequence, the listing says you solve one word at a time, so follow the order presented by the game.
The Quordle.game instructions describe a version with nine total attempts and keyboard controls; Quordle.me also describes a nine-guess game. Feedback applies to the answer on the board where it appears. Do not carry a letter’s status from one grid to another: a letter can be green on one board and gray on another.
- Green: The letter is in the answer in that exact position.
- Yellow: The letter is in the answer, but belongs in a different position.
- Gray: The letter is not in that board’s answer.
Keep a separate mental note of each board’s fixed positions, misplaced letters, and excluded letters. The Quordle.me instructions describe the keyboard as divided into four sections so you can track letter status by board. Quordle.me instructions.
How many guesses do you get?
There is no single limit for every mode. The official Quordle listing observed on October 7, 2026, displays the following figures and descriptions:

The official listing also names a weekly challenge unlocked by solving a Daily Classic puzzle. Mode availability and limits can change, so use the count shown in the game when you begin rather than assuming every Quordle game allows nine attempts. Quordle game listing.

Each submitted word is evaluated against the unsolved boards, so early guesses are most useful when they test several letters likely to appear in different answers. The Quordle rules page recommends using the first two or three guesses to explore a broad range of distinct letters. It is a practical information-gathering heuristic, not a proven optimal opening or a guarantee of success. Quordle.game rules.

Use broad guesses at the start
Try to cover common letters without repeatedly testing letters you already know are absent from a particular board. The rules page suggests prioritizing E, A, R, S, T, O, L, I, and N. Since the clues are board-specific, a letter ruled out on one grid may still be worth testing for another.
Keep every board’s clues separate
Track green positions, yellow letters and their tried positions, and gray letters for each grid. A gray result only excludes that letter from the answer on the board that produced it. Likewise, a yellow letter’s position restriction belongs only to that board.

Shift to a targeted guess when one board remains
When three answers are solved, use the final board’s known pattern and excluded letters to choose more focused guesses. At that point, a word that tests likely placements for its remaining letters can be more useful than another broad opener.

What are the quadrants on the keyboard keys?
The keyboard’s four sections are a visual way to track feedback for the four separate boards. Read a key’s status in the section associated with the board you are solving. How the modes change your approach
For Classic, plan around the displayed nine-guess limit. Extreme allows one fewer attempt than Classic and is described as using more unusual words, so each guess has less room for low-information testing. Chill allows more attempts and is described as using fewer unusual words. In Sequence, solve the word currently presented before moving on; the listing does not establish a guess limit for it. The accessible listing names Rescue but does not explain its rules, so check the in-game description rather than assuming how it works.
