Microlink extensions attach added hair with a tiny silicone-lined or metal bead instead of glue or heat. A stylist threads a small section of your natural hair through the bead, inserts an I-tip strand or positions a weft, then compresses the bead with professional pliers. The bead grips the hair mechanically, so the attachment point has no adhesive or heated keratin.

“Microlink” describes the attachment method; “I-tip” describes the individual strand designed to go into that bead. Understanding that distinction makes it easier to compare installation time, coverage, visibility, maintenance and risk.

What a microlink extension is

A microlink is a small bead-based attachment. The bead may be silicone-lined for additional grip or made from metal. During installation, the stylist isolates a controlled section of natural hair, threads it through the bead, inserts the extension and clamps the bead closed with purpose-made microbead or I-tip pliers.

The bead—not glue, tape or heat—supports the added hair. The natural hair remains visible and movable around the attachment, which is why section size, bead placement and tension are central to safety.

LaaVoo 20 Inch Microlink Hair Extensions Human Hair, Jet Black, 50g
  • No-Heat Design: LaaVoo micro link hair is designed with silicone‑lined beads that attach without heat which helps reduce the risk of damage from hot tools; it keeps your scalp cool and comfortable during long workdays or weekend getaways
  • Hidden Links: The ultra-small, color‑matched rings lie flat against your scalp, staying nearly invisible; ideal for both medium-coarse and fine hair types; they typically don't poke or scratch, so you can enjoy active days or dance floors
  • Custom Volume: LaaVoo micro loop hair is available in 14–24 inch lengths and 50g or 100g per pack to add subtle lift or fullness; for everyday highlights, use 50–100g; for weddings or photoshoots, 150–200g builds natural voluminous hair
  • Reusable Fit: These rings open with standard pliers, so you can unclamp and reposition as your natural hair grows; this adjustability lets you extend wear life and refresh the fit without a full reinstallation every time
  • Easy Install: Each strand comes pre‑threaded on a plastic loop, making threading simple and quick; with just micro‑ring pliers, you can achieve a salon‑quality result at home—suitable for first‑timers or budget‑conscious users

Microlinks versus I-tips

  • Microlink: the bead-based attachment technique.
  • I-tip: an individual extension strand with a tip that is inserted into the bead.
  • Microlink weft: a track of hair secured across multiple beaded sections.

Every I-tip installation is a microlink installation, but a microlink service can also use a weft. Hair.com’s L’Oréal Professional guide describes microlinks as safe when a technician leaves room for hair mobility and the client follows appropriate care; that condition is important because the method is not automatically damage-free.

How the installation works

  1. Consultation and assessment: The stylist checks density, elasticity, processing, thinning areas and the amount of length or fullness requested. Fragile or visibly thinning hair may not support extra weight.
  2. Sectioning and preparation: Hair is clean, dry and divided into controlled rows. Sections must be neither so small that they carry excessive tension nor so large that the bead slips.
  3. Threading: A loop tool or similar applicator pulls the natural-hair section through the bead.
  4. Placing the extension: For an I-tip, the strand tip is inserted into the bead. For a weft, the track is aligned across several prepared beads.
  5. Clamping: Professional pliers compress the bead until it holds securely without crushing the natural hair.
  6. Blending and inspection: The stylist checks spacing, comfort and movement, then trims or blends the ends and styles the hair.

Jennifer Korab, a celebrity hairstylist and Renaissance Salon owner, has described the method as “an extension which is attached to the hair using a silicone microbead.” The bead is small, but the load it carries is not: a professional must distribute that load across suitable sections.

I-tip or microlink weft: which format fits?

Factor I-tip, strand by strand Microlink weft
Placement control Highest; each strand can be positioned independently Lower than individual strands because a track is placed across a row
Best use Targeted fullness, face-framing pieces and fine adjustments More coverage and volume across a larger area
Installation Many individual bead-and-strand placements Several beaded sections support one track
What to compare Your density and strength, desired length versus volume, extension weight, visibility, stylist skill, installation time, maintenance interval and total cost

An experienced stylist may combine formats—for example, a weft for broad fullness and I-tips for the hairline or sides. The appropriate choice depends on your own hair rather than a universal “best” system.

Do microlinks damage hair?

They can. Microlinks avoid glue and heat at the attachment point, but they still add weight and mechanical tension. Tight beads, oversized sections, excessive extension weight, poor spacing, neglected matting and forceful removal can cause breakage or traction-related injury.

Higher-risk situations

  • Very fine, fragile, heavily bleached or already breaking hair.
  • Active shedding or visibly thinning areas.
  • Beads installed too close to the scalp or pulled tight enough to cause persistent soreness.
  • Skipping move-ups until roots tangle around the attachments.
  • Sleeping with wet, tangled hair or brushing aggressively from the roots.

Microlinks are not a protective style: your natural hair remains exposed to washing, friction and styling. Ask for a strand and scalp assessment before committing. Pain, scalp bumps, headaches, persistent itching or sudden breakage are reasons to contact the stylist promptly and have the attachments evaluated.

How long do microlinks last?

There is no single guaranteed lifespan. Beads move down the hair shaft as your hair grows, and the safe interval depends on hair growth, texture, bead type, installation design, activity and salon protocol.

Published guidance Interval or time Qualification
Ugeat (2025) 6–10 weeks Reported use cycle for its microlink extensions
Runature (2025) 6–8 weeks Reported interval before repositioning
Clutch and Curl (2026) Approximately 12 weeks Salon-reported duration when its recommended biweekly maintenance schedule is followed

These figures are method- and client-dependent ranges, not promises. Your stylist should set the move-up date before installation and shorten it if roots mat, beads loosen or tension increases.

How often do microlinks need a move-up?

A move-up returns the beads toward the scalp after natural growth. Schedule stylist checks before attachments become loose or tangled. Published recommendations range from about six to ten weeks, with some salons reporting roughly twelve weeks under a specific maintenance program.

Do not wait for a bead to slide visibly or for roots to form a dense mat. At a move-up, the stylist opens the bead with the correct tool, repositions it on new growth, checks the section and reclamps it. Reusing an old bead is not always appropriate; follow the installing salon’s policy.

Home care that protects the attachment

  • Detangle from the ends upward with an extension-appropriate brush or comb.
  • Support the roots with one hand while brushing so the beads do not bear a sudden tug.
  • Keep heavy conditioner, masks and oily products away from the beads unless your stylist approves them.
  • Use heat protectant and avoid directing high heat at the attachment area.
  • Follow the stylist’s instructions for washing, sleeping, swimming and exercise; hair texture and daily activity change the plan.
  • Dry thoroughly and separate rows gently so damp hair does not mat around the beads.

Never pull an extension out yourself. A bead that will not open can tear natural hair when forced.

How long does installation take?

Allure reported approximately 75–100 pieces and about two to three hours for volume-only work in 2022. A full head or added length on short hair can take up to eight hours, also according to Allure. Piece count, density, blending, format and stylist speed make the actual appointment highly variable.

What microlinks cost and what to ask before booking

Total price depends on the amount and quality of human hair, I-tip versus weft format, labor, blending, move-ups and removal. Ask for an itemized quote covering the initial install, expected move-up schedule, replacement beads, maintenance appointments and eventual removal.

Removal and troubleshooting

Bead slips soon after installation

Possible causes include an oversized section, insufficient clamping, product buildup or hair that cannot support the weight. Do not reclamp it at home; book a correction so the section and extension weight can be reassessed.

Scalp soreness or headache

Persistent discomfort can indicate excessive tension or misplaced beads. Contact the stylist promptly for an adjustment or removal rather than waiting for the scheduled move-up.

Matting at the roots

Stop pulling through the mat. Separate surrounding hair gently and have a professional remove or reposition the affected beads. Delayed maintenance makes breakage more likely.

Breakage or thinning

Pause additional installation and obtain a professional assessment. The cause may be tension, chemical damage, inadequate sectioning or another scalp or hair issue; a stylist or clinician can determine the appropriate next step.

Frequently asked questions

Can microlinks be installed without glue or heat?

Yes. The bead is clamped mechanically, so no glue or heat is used at the attachment point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are microlinks visible?

They can be concealed with suitable sectioning and blending, but visibility depends on hair density, color, placement, styling and the bead selected.

Can I swim or exercise with microlinks?

Usually, but follow your stylist’s specific washing, drying and protection instructions because moisture, friction and activity affect tangling and maintenance.

Are microlinks permanent?

No. They are semi-permanent extensions that require professional move-ups and eventual removal.
