Install Chrome, then choose it from your device’s default-browser setting. Google’s instructions route you there from inside Chrome: More > Settings > Default Browser > Go to Settings… > Default Browser App. Select Chrome at the final step.
Set Chrome as the default browser
- Install Chrome: If it is not already on your iPhone or iPad, open the App Store, search for Chrome, tap Get, complete any prompts, and open the app. Google’s setup instructions describe this installation route.
- Open Chrome’s default-browser controls: Tap More > Settings > Default Browser.
- Choose Chrome in device settings: Tap Go to Settings… > Default Browser App, then select Chrome.
What the iOS requirements mean
Google’s default-browser instructions say that choosing a default browser requires iOS 14 or later. Separately, Google’s current Chrome setup page lists iOS 18 and later as the supported operating-system range for Chrome. These statements describe different things: the iOS version needed for the default-browser setting and the app’s stated support range. The iOS 14 setting requirement does not establish that every current Chrome version runs on iOS 14. Check Google’s Chrome setup and support information for its current guidance.
You do not need to sign in to a Google Account to change the default browser; Google lists account sign-in as a separate option, not a prerequisite.

Google says links you click will open automatically in Chrome whenever possible. In some countries, you may be asked to choose a default browser; Google says you can change that choice later. See Google Chrome Help for its description of the behavior.

If “Default Browser” is missing
- Confirm Chrome is installed on the device.
- Update Chrome if its Default Browser option does not appear. Updating is Google’s stated troubleshooting step.
- Check the iOS version against the separate setting requirement and Chrome support range above; meeting the setting requirement alone does not confirm that a current Chrome release is supported.
The steps here follow Google’s route through Chrome. Settings labels can vary by iOS version or region.
