Your Venmo username is stored in the profile settings of the app, and it is a different field from the first and last name shown on your profile. To read it, open the app, tap Me, tap the Settings gear, then go to Account and Profile. The value in the Username field is the handle other people need to find you by name.
Find your username in the Venmo app
- Open the Venmo app and tap Me.
- Tap the Settings gear in the upper right.
- Tap Account, then Profile.
- Read the value in the Username field. To change it, edit that field and save.
Venmo’s app navigation can change between releases, so if the labels differ slightly on your phone, look for the same path: profile settings, then the field labelled Username.

Find it on the web
You can also check or edit the username in a browser. Sign in to Venmo on the web, select Settings, then Profile. The username appears there in the same field.

Most confusion comes from treating three separate items as one. Venmo’s help material distinguishes them:

- Username: the handle in the Username field under Profile. This is what someone types when searching for you.
- First and last name: separate profile fields. The name people see on your profile is not automatically your handle, so give out the Username value when someone asks for your Venmo name.
- QR code: a scannable code that opens your profile without anyone typing anything. It is covered in the next section.
Rules for choosing a username
Venmo’s username help article states the following rules. The article’s publication date is not stated on the page, so check the current version in the Help Center if you are relying on an exact limit.
- Usernames must be between 5 and 30 characters.
- Hyphens and underscores are the only special characters allowed.
If a username you want is already taken, the app will not accept it; choose a variation that meets these rules.

- Use your Visa Gift Card in the U.S. everywhere Visa debit cards are accepted, including online.
Share your Venmo profile with a QR code
If you would rather not read out a username, use the Venmo me code:
- In the app, tap Me.
- Tap the QR-code button on your profile picture.
- Select Venmo me.
The code is linked to your profile. You can share it by text, email, or other methods, and the person who scans it reaches your profile.

Do not confuse this with Show to Pay. That code is for paying at participating stores. It is a different function from the Venmo me profile code, and sharing it with a friend does not give them a route to your profile.

Searchability is controlled by a separate setting. Go to Me, then Settings, then Privacy, then Find Me. Venmo says these preferences determine whether you can be found on Venmo or PayPal.

Payment privacy is a different control. It governs who can see your transaction activity, so changing it will not make your account easier or harder to find. If someone still cannot locate you, confirm the username spelling against the Username field, then check Find Me, and send them the Venmo me code as a fallback.
