The message “Application error: a client-side exception has occurred” usually means that JavaScript in a website failed in your browser. It is normally not a Windows 11 system error, and reinstalling Windows is very unlikely to help.

The quickest way to identify the cause is to open the same page in a private browser window. Then work through extensions, site data, permissions, browser updates, and security or DNS filtering.

1. Test the website in a private window

This separates the normal browser profile from the test. It helps identify whether cookies, cached files, extensions, or saved site settings are involved.

In Google Chrome

  1. Select the three-dot menu in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select New Incognito window.
  3. Alternatively, press Ctrl + Shift + N.
  4. Open the affected website and try the same action again.

In Microsoft Edge

  1. Select the three-dot menu.
  2. Select New InPrivate window.
  3. Open the website and test it again.

If the page works in the private window but fails in the normal window, the problem is probably local to your browser profile. Likely causes include an extension, damaged site data, a cookie setting, or a browser security feature.

There is one important limitation: Chrome blocks third-party cookies by default in Incognito. A website that depends on those cookies can fail in Incognito even when the normal profile is healthy. Private browsing is therefore a useful comparison, not a guaranteed “extensions disabled” test.

2. Disable extensions

Ad blockers, cookie managers, privacy tools, translators, script modifiers, and security extensions can alter a website’s JavaScript, cookies, page structure, or network requests. A single blocked JavaScript bundle or authentication request can produce this error.

Chrome

  1. Enter chrome://extensions in the address bar.
  2. Turn off extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy extensions, VPN extensions, and script or cookie tools.
  3. Reload the affected page with Ctrl + R.

Edge

  1. Select … in the upper-right corner.
  2. Select Extensions.
  3. Select Manage extensions.
  4. Turn extensions off and reload the page.

If disabling extensions fixes the error, re-enable them one at a time and reload the page after each change. When the error returns, you have identified the conflicting extension. Update it, remove it, or add the affected website to its permitted-sites list if the extension supports that option.

3. Clear the affected website’s data

Clearing only browsing history may not remove the data causing the failure. Modern websites can store login sessions, application state, cached JavaScript, IndexedDB records, Web Storage, and permissions separately from history.

Start with the affected website rather than deleting all browser data:

  1. Open the website in Chrome.
  2. Select the site-information icon to the left of the address bar.
  3. Select Site settings.
  4. Select Reset permissions, if shown.
  5. Return to the site-information menu and remove or clear the site’s stored data if that option is available.
  6. Close the tab, open the website again, and sign in.

You can also use Chrome’s full clearing screen by opening More → Delete browsing data. Select at least:

Be aware that clearing cookies can sign you out, remove website permissions, empty some shopping carts, and delete local data used by web applications. Do not select saved passwords unless you intentionally want to remove them.

4. Check JavaScript and site permissions

Most modern web applications require JavaScript. Do not turn JavaScript off as a general troubleshooting measure; doing so will usually make the site unusable. Instead, verify that JavaScript is permitted for the affected site.

In Chrome:

  1. Select More → Settings.
  2. Select Privacy and security → Site settings.
  3. Open JavaScript.
  4. Ensure sites are allowed to use JavaScript, or add the affected website to the allowed list.

While in Site settings, review permissions for third-party cookies, pop-ups and redirects, insecure content, automatic downloads, and embedded content. Do not allow everything permanently. Change only the permission needed for this website, test it, and undo the change if it makes no difference.

5. Update Chrome or Edge

Browser updates can fix JavaScript, certificate, cookie, and compatibility problems. Updating Windows does not necessarily install the latest browser version.

Update Chrome

  1. Select More → Help → About Google Chrome.
  2. Allow Chrome to check for updates.
  3. Select Relaunch if it appears.

If there is no Relaunch button, Chrome reports that it is already current. On Windows, closing and reopening Chrome can also apply a pending update.

Update Edge

  1. Select … → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge.
  2. Allow Edge to check for and install updates.
  3. Restart the browser if prompted.

6. Check Secure DNS, VPNs, and security software

A browser can display a client-side exception when a required JavaScript file, API request, login request, or third-party resource is blocked before the page finishes loading. Possible blockers include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Secure DNS or DNS filtering
  • Antivirus web protection
  • VPN filtering
  • Corporate or school network filtering
  • Anti-tracking software
  • Ad and content blockers

In Chrome, check the browser’s DNS setting at chrome://settings/security. Under Use secure DNS, temporarily switch to another provider or turn the feature off for testing. The exact cause can be provider-specific, so this is a diagnostic step rather than a recommended permanent setting.

Also test the website with any VPN disconnected and with the antivirus product’s web shield temporarily paused, if your security software permits that. Re-enable protection immediately after testing. On a work or school computer, do not bypass managed security controls; ask the administrator to investigate blocked domains or requests.

7. Reset Chrome settings

If the problem continues across many websites, a damaged or heavily modified Chrome profile may be responsible. Chrome has a built-in reset:

  1. Select More → Settings.
  2. Select Reset settings.
  3. Select Restore settings to their original defaults.
  4. Select Reset settings.

This resets items such as the search engine, homepage, startup pages, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes. Chrome says that bookmarks and saved passwords are not deleted, although you should still confirm that important data is synced or backed up before making substantial changes. Some settings, including fonts and accessibility settings, are not removed by this reset.

If Chrome Settings will not open, Google’s fallback is to uninstall Chrome and download it again from the official Chrome website. Avoid downloading browser installers from third-party software sites.

8. Determine whether the website is broken

The message does not reveal the actual JavaScript exception. It is a generic error screen displayed after the website’s code fails. The website may have shipped a broken update, failed to authenticate your session, or lost access to an API or static resource.

It is probably a website-side problem when all of these are true:

  • The error occurs in Chrome and Edge.
  • It occurs in both normal and private windows.
  • Extensions are disabled.
  • The site’s cookies and stored data have been cleared.
  • The problem also occurs on another device or network.

Try the site from a phone using mobile data rather than the same Wi-Fi network. If it fails there too, check the service’s status page or contact its support team. Include the page address, approximate time of failure, browser version, Windows version, and a screenshot. Do not send passwords, session cookies, or private account data.

9. Inspect the browser error for technical details

If you manage the website or need to give useful information to its support team, open the browser developer tools before reproducing the problem:

  1. Open the affected page.
  2. Press F12, or press Ctrl + Shift + I.
  3. Open the Console tab.
  4. Reload the page and reproduce the error.
  5. Look for red messages, failed script files, blocked requests, authentication errors, or messages mentioning a specific JavaScript file.

The Console may identify a missing resource or a precise exception such as an undefined variable. The Network tab can show requests returning status codes such as 401, 403, 404, or 500. These details are often more useful to the website owner than the generic error screen.

What not to do first

Suggestion Why it is usually the wrong first move
Reinstall Windows 11 The failure is normally in a website’s JavaScript or the browser session, not the operating system.
Run random registry repairs There is no standard registry key that fixes a browser-rendered client-side exception.
Clear only browsing history Cookies, cached files, storage, and site permissions can remain intact.
Disable JavaScript globally Most interactive websites require it and will stop working.
Assume Incognito disables every extension Private browsing is a separate session, but extension behavior and cookie rules vary. Third-party cookies are blocked by default in Chrome Incognito.

Recommended troubleshooting order

  1. Test the site in Chrome Incognito or Edge InPrivate.
  2. Disable extensions in the normal profile.
  3. Clear data and permissions for the affected website.
  4. Confirm JavaScript and required site permissions.
  5. Update the browser.
  6. Test Secure DNS, VPN, antivirus web protection, and network filtering.
  7. Reset Chrome settings if several websites are affected.
  8. Compare another browser, device, and network.
  9. Report the issue to the website if it fails everywhere.

FAQ

Is “a client-side exception has occurred” a Windows 11 error?

Usually not. It generally means that JavaScript in a website failed in Chrome, Edge, or another browser. Windows 11 is the environment where the browser is running, but the underlying problem may be site data, an extension, security filtering, or the website’s own code.

Why does the website work in Incognito but not normally?

The normal browser profile may contain corrupted cookies or cached application data, or an extension may be changing the page. Incognito is a separate session, although its default third-party-cookie restrictions can also cause some websites to fail.

Will clearing cookies delete my passwords?

Clearing cookies and site data normally signs you out and removes website storage, but it is separate from deleting saved passwords. Do not select the saved-password category unless you specifically intend to remove those passwords.

Should I disable JavaScript to fix the error?

No. JavaScript is required by most modern web applications. Check that it is allowed for the affected website instead of disabling it globally.

What if the error appears in Chrome and Edge?

Test private windows, disable extensions, clear the site’s data, and compare another device or network. If it still fails everywhere, the website’s code, authentication service, deployment, or backend may be responsible.

Can Secure DNS cause this error?

It can in some cases. DNS filtering may prevent a required script, API, or authentication resource from loading. Temporarily changing the browser’s Secure DNS setting can help confirm whether it is involved, but it is not a universal cause.

The Bottom Line

Start with a private-window comparison, then disable extensions and clear data for the affected website. Check JavaScript permissions, update the browser, and test Secure DNS or security filtering before considering a browser reset. If the error survives those tests in multiple browsers, devices, and networks, the website—not Windows 11—is the most likely source.
