A digital hourglass keeps the familiar flip-to-start idea but uses light instead of grains. A tilt sensor detects which end is up, and a controller animates LEDs to make “sand” appear to move from the upper chamber to the lower one. The result can be a visual countdown, a desk object, or a maker project—not a mechanical sand timer.
How does a digital hourglass replace sand?
Instead of letting grains fall through a narrow passage, a digital design uses an orientation sensor and a sequence of lights. When the device is turned over, its controller identifies the new top and bottom chambers, then changes the LED pattern to suggest that light is falling. The enjoiju FLIP manual describes its segments as representing “the sand of a classic hourglass.”
- Sense orientation: A gravity or tilt sensor detects how the device is positioned.
- Choose the chambers: A microcontroller determines which side is uppermost.
- Animate the display: LEDs switch in sequence to create the appearance of falling pixels or segments.
- Respond to a flip: Depending on the model, turning it over may start, reset, pause, or reverse the countdown.
The exact behavior varies by device. A flip is part of the interaction, but it does not guarantee that every digital hourglass operates like a traditional timer.
What happens inside an Arduino version?
The ESCLabs build uses an Arduino Uno, Nano, or Pro Mini as the central controller, an ADXL335 accelerometer to detect orientation, and two 8×8 LED matrix modules driven by MAX7219 chips. The Arduino reads the sensor, runs the animation, and communicates with the LED drivers. The program identifies the upper chamber and animates pixels toward the lower matrix.
#1 Best Overall
- Flip to Start Timing in Seconds: Simply turn the timer over to begin the countdown. The LED sand flows like a real hourglass, making time easy to see at a glance for kids, students and adults
- Adjustable 1-30 Minute Countdown: Set the time you need from 1 to 30 minutes for homework, reading, cooking, workouts, screen-time limits, classroom activities or Pomodoro-style focus sessions
- Sound Alert, Mute Mode & Dimmable LED Display: Turn the sound on for audible reminders or switch to mute mode for quiet spaces. The dimmable LED display lets you adjust the brightness for daytime use, bedtime routines or low-light environments
- USB-C Rechargeable and Easy to Place Anywhere: Built with a rechargeable battery and USB-C charging. The compact size fits easily on a desk, kitchen counter, bedside table, classroom shelf or office workspace
- Modern LED Hourglass Timer: More than a basic timer, this digital hourglass design works as a stylish desk accessory and practical gift for students, families, teachers, coworkers and anyone who enjoys visual time management
The documented parts list also includes a 3.7V Li-ion battery, charger/booster, button, connecting wires, and 3D-printed frame parts. This is a maker build rather than a ready-to-use timer: expect electronics assembly and coding. Yanko Design also notes the need for soldering and access to a 3D printer, though its frame pattern can be sent to a printing service.

- The Electronic Hourglass is a unique blend of timekeeping and modern technology. This eye-catching timer doubles as a stylish decor item, seamlessly blending form and function. With its contemporary design, it's not just a timer but also an interesting topic of conversation
Should you buy one or build one?
Choose a ready-made timer for immediate use
A finished product makes more sense if you want a visual timer or desk accessory without assembling electronics. The BlazeBuy listing describes a rechargeable device with adjustable brightness and a 1–30 minute setting range. Check the live listing for current price, stock, dimensions, and support details before buying, since those can change.
Choose a DIY build to learn and customize
The Arduino approach is better suited to someone interested in sensors, LED animation, and enclosure fabrication. It offers a concrete path to building the effect, but the documented parts and fabrication requirements mean it is not simply a matter of uploading code to an Arduino. Budget for the board, accelerometer, LED modules, battery electronics, wiring, and frame.

- FLIP TO START: Turn the timer over and the gravity sensor begins the countdown. Flowing LED sand makes time easy to follow without repeatedly checking a phone or clock
- SET ANY TIME FROM 130 MINUTES: Choose any whole minute for reading, homework, cooking, workouts, meetings, screen-time transitions, or short focus sessions
- SOUND OR SILENT: Use the audible alert for busy kitchens or switch to mute for classrooms, offices, libraries, and bedtime routines. Adjust the LED brightness for different environments
- USB-C RECHARGEABLE: The compact 3.8 x 2.2 x 0.8 in design fits easily on a desk, kitchen counter, shelf, bedside table, or in a travel bag
- MODERN VISUAL TIME MANAGEMENT: A practical timer and distinctive desk accessory for students, teachers, families, and coworkers who prefer simple, screen-free time management
Choose a conventional sand timer when simplicity matters
A digital model can show a countdown without physical sand, but the sources do not establish that it is more accurate or more reliable than a conventional timer. If your priority is a simple timer rather than programmable settings or animated light, the digital effect may be unnecessary.
