A safety-certified RTOS can provide assessed component evidence for a product safety case and reduce the need to reassess that component from scratch. It does not certify the complete application or device: the manufacturer must still show that the RTOS is used within its certified scope and complete the safety work for the product.

How to use RTOS certification in a product safety case

Treat the certificate as evidence about a defined software component—not as a shortcut around product-level safety engineering. The practical value lies in using the certificate, safety manual and supporting reports to establish what was assessed, how the component may be used, and what evidence remains for your own system.

  1. Identify the product standard and required integrity level

Start with the standard and integrity level required for the product’s domain. A label such as SIL 3 or ASIL D is not enough to determine suitability: check the standard edition, clause or route, assessed component, and certificate scope. For example, the published ThreadX 6.1.x scope names IEC 61508-3:2010 clause 7.4.2.12 route 3S, IEC 62304:2015, ISO 26262-8:2018 clause 12, and EN 50128:2011 clause 7.3.4.7. Those details should be compared with the requirements that apply to your product.

  2. Match the exact RTOS component and version

Confirm that the certificate covers the specific kernel or middleware component and release you intend to integrate. A certificate for one release or component does not establish coverage for a later release, a different port, or related middleware. The Eclipse ThreadX page lists certified 6.1.x components, including ThreadX Core kernel 6.1.1 and separately versioned SMP Core, GUIX, NetX Duo and USBX components. It describes certification of 6.4.x components as intended, rather than listing it as completed. Verify the certificate status for the actual software you will ship.

    • Support LWIP protocol, Freertos
    • SupportThree Modes: AP, STA, and AP+STA
    • Ultra-Low power consumption, Compatible with Arduino IDE
    • ESP32 is a safe, reliable, and scalable to a variety of applications
  3. Obtain and review the complete safety package before integration

Request the certificate, safety manual and supporting certification or technical reports. Read the package for assumptions of use, configuration rules, supported targets, compiler constraints, known limitations and change-control obligations. Check what is included in the vendor’s offer: Eclipse ThreadX says its safety artifact package is available under license to ThreadX Alliance members; PX5 describes its artifacts as part of a licensed package; SEGGER says the embOS-Safe certificate and safety manual are included. These packaging descriptions do not replace confirmation of the terms and documents available to your team.

  4. Define the component boundary and handle integration code

Map the RTOS into the software architecture and safety case, including code that binds it to the target and application. PX5’s FAQ describes its generic C code as an off-the-shelf certified component and says binding code—described there as roughly ten small assembly functions—must be addressed with application firmware. That is a PX5-specific description, not a rule that applies to every RTOS. Use the selected product’s safety manual and assessor guidance to determine how your integration code is handled.

  5. Complete product-level verification and certification

Build the remaining evidence for the application, hardware, system architecture, safety mechanisms and integration. SEGGER explicitly places responsibility for certification of the complete application on the manufacturer; component documentation can simplify that work but does not transfer it to the RTOS supplier.

How to choose between certified RTOS options

After confirming that an option can meet the product’s required standard and level, compare the practical fit of the certified component and its evidence. Useful decision criteria include:

  • Scope: Does the certificate cover the exact software version, components and target configuration you plan to use?
  • Target and toolchain: Are your processor, board, compiler and development tools supported within the documented scope?
  • Architecture and APIs: Does the RTOS fit the product’s software architecture and portability needs without requiring unsupported changes?
  • Safety documentation: Can your team access and understand the safety manual, reports, configuration rules and assumptions of use?
  • Licensing and maintenance: What artifacts are included or licensed, and how are updates or changes governed?
  • Remaining evidence: What application, binding, hardware and system-level work will your team still need to complete?

Vendor pages describe their own claims and scopes; they do not establish an independent benchmark across these products. Before procurement and integration, inspect the actual certificate and safety package and confirm applicability with the relevant assessor.
