Design by Contract (DbC) makes a software component’s assumptions, guarantees, and state rules explicit. In embedded applications, those contracts can be checked at runtime or through static and deductive verification, helping developers expose interface violations and decide how to respond. They are one part of an assurance process—not proof that a system is safe or defect-free.

What a contract specifies

DbC treats components as collaborators with defined mutual obligations. At a module boundary, a contract can describe three things:

  • Preconditions: what must be true before a function or component is used, including valid input ranges and relevant environmental assumptions.
  • Postconditions: what the component guarantees after it completes, assuming its preconditions were met.
  • Invariants: properties that should remain true across operations, such as constraints on persistent state.

The point is to make interface expectations inspectable rather than leaving them only in prose. A comment that describes an assumption is useful documentation, but it is not automatically enforced. Enforcement depends on whether the contract is expressed in a mechanism that actually checks it.

Choose how each contract will be checked

Runtime assertions, static analysis, and deductive verification serve different purposes. The useful choice depends on what is specified, when it needs to be checked, and what evidence the project requires.

Approach What it can check When it checks Key limitation
Runtime assertion A condition evaluated at a specific point, such as a precondition, postcondition, or invariant. During execution when the relevant code path runs. It cannot establish that unexecuted paths are correct, and a failure needs a target-specific response.
Static analysis Properties that the selected analyzer and rules can examine without executing the application. During analysis, typically as part of development or a build process. Coverage and findings depend on the tool, its configuration, and the properties being checked.
Deductive verification Specified claims about program behavior, such as whether a function meets a formal contract under stated assumptions. Through proof obligations handled by a verification tool. A proof covers the formalized claims and assumptions, not unspecified behavior or the whole system by default.
Module-interface contract Assumptions and guarantees about permitted interactions between modules, including call ordering where specified. By whatever analysis or verification mechanism is implemented for the interface rules. A specification alone does not enforce the rules; the checking mechanism and its scope matter.

Do not place essential work inside an assertion expression. In the cited embedded guidance, disabled assertion macros do not evaluate their expressions. A function call, state update, or other required side effect inside such an expression may therefore disappear when assertions are disabled.

Plan the response to a failed runtime assertion

On an embedded target, assertion failure is not just a debugging event. A desktop-style screen or ordinary process exit may not exist, and the correct response depends on the hardware, system hazards, safety architecture, and recovery policy.

The cited embedded guidance describes a possible handler that disables interrupts, attempts to enter a fail-safe state, and then resets, while retaining diagnostic breadcrumbs when feasible. This is an example, not a universal prescription. A project should define its own response for each relevant failure class.

  • Safe-state transition: Determine whether the component or system can move to a defined state that reduces risk, and what that state means for the product.
  • Diagnostic capture: Decide which context is useful to preserve and whether it can be recorded within the target’s resource and operational constraints.
  • Reset or continued operation: Specify whether a reset is appropriate, or whether another recovery path is required. Consider what happens if the fault recurs or a reset does not resolve it.
  • Interrupt and fault behavior: Confirm that the handler’s actions are appropriate for the target and do not conflict with system-level recovery mechanisms.

These decisions belong in the system’s architecture and safety process. Copying a generic assertion handler without analyzing its effects can introduce new risks.

Apply contracts at embedded component boundaries

Contracts are especially useful where modules exchange data or depend on assumptions that are otherwise easy to leave implicit. AUTOSAR Classic, for example, describes a platform for deeply embedded systems with Application, Runtime Environment (RTE), and Basic Software (BSW) layers. That layered structure illustrates why clear component expectations and guarantees matter; AUTOSAR itself is not a DbC method.

For each boundary, identify valid inputs, environmental assumptions, promised outputs or state changes, and any required ordering of interactions. Then choose whether each property needs documentation, runtime checking, static analysis, or formal verification. Be precise about what the selected mechanism covers: a function assertion does not automatically check a sequence of calls between modules.

What formal verification of embedded C can add

A 2026 preprint describes using ACSL function contracts and Frama-C’s Wp plugin for deductive verification, alongside module-interface contracts. It also describes a VerNFR plugin that checks a selected subset of control-flow and data-flow constraints. The authors report two case studies involving safety-critical software in Scania trucks, in which they derived module and ACSL function contracts from informal system requirements and verified them with their toolchain.

These are reported case studies, not a general measurement of defect reduction, reliability improvement, runtime cost, or effectiveness across embedded projects. The plugin’s selected checks also should not be read as verification of every non-functional requirement. The approach is useful as an example of combining function-level specifications with rules about module interactions, while keeping the scope of each check explicit.

Use DbC alongside coding rules and safety processes

MISRA C provides guidance for safe and secure embedded control software, but coding-rule compliance is not a substitute for specifying functional behavior. MISRA C:2023 Addendum 2 (October 2024) states: “Adherence to the requirements of this document does not in itself ensure error-free robust software or guarantee portability and re-use.” DbC does not remove that limitation; it makes selected assumptions and guarantees explicit and potentially checkable.

Use contracts as one layer in an assurance approach that also includes applicable coding rules, testing, analysis, and system-level safety processes. The evidence described here does not establish a representative numerical benefit from DbC for embedded applications, and no such figure should be inferred from two case studies.

Practical adoption checklist

  1. Start at a meaningful interface. Select a component boundary where incorrect inputs, assumptions, or interactions could matter.
  2. Write the obligations precisely. State preconditions, postconditions, persistent invariants, and any required call ordering in terms that can be reviewed.
  3. Select an enforcement mechanism. Use runtime assertions for conditions that should be checked during execution, or suitable static-analysis and deductive-verification methods for properties that need different evidence.
  4. Define failure behavior before deployment. Specify diagnostics and recovery in the context of the actual target and system architecture.
  5. Keep assertions free of required side effects. Code must remain correct if assertion expressions are disabled and not evaluated.
  6. Review coverage and assumptions. Confirm which paths, properties, modules, and environmental assumptions the chosen checks include—and which they do not.
  7. Integrate with the assurance process. Treat contract checks as complementary to testing, coding guidance, and system-level safety work.
