They can draw on preferences, profile details, location, activity, and past interactions, but each app describes different signals and keeps its complete ranking formula private. A recommendation is not a guarantee of mutual interest, compatibility, or a lasting relationship.
What a dating app matching algorithm does
A dating app matching algorithm is a recommendation system. It selects or orders profiles for you based on information the service has about your preferences and activity. You still decide whether to like, skip, or contact someone.
Dating recommendations are also two-sided: a person you like must be interested in you for an interaction to follow. The 2015 paper Reciprocal Recommendation System for Online Dating describes this as finding candidates who both fit a user’s interests and are likely to reciprocate contact. Its model was studied using data from a major Chinese dating site; it is a useful explanation of the problem, not a description of how any current app works.
A useful mental model
- Apply eligibility settings. The app can use settings such as age range, distance, gender preferences, or other discovery controls to decide which profiles are eligible to appear.
- Estimate relevance. Profile information and signals such as likes, skips, matches, or activity can help tailor recommendations. Which signals count—and how much they count—varies by service.
- Present a selection. The app orders a feed, deck, or curated group rather than showing every eligible person at once.
- Use feedback. Later recommendations may reflect user interactions. This does not mean every app uses every interaction in the same way.
- Wait for mutual interest where the product requires it. Many swipe-based services require both people to express interest before a match or conversation can begin; that interaction design is common, not universal across every dating product.
This is a conceptual model, not a reverse-engineered account of any company’s production code.

What Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble say they use
The services disclose examples of their inputs, not complete formulas. The table distinguishes what each source says from what it does not establish.

How does the Tinder algorithm work?
Tinder’s Help Center says it prioritizes potential matches who are active, especially at the same time. As Jamie Gaul of Tinder’s Help Center put it in the September 1, 2026 article, “We prioritize potential matches who are active, and active at the same time.” That is Tinder’s public explanation; the page does not reveal the full ranking formula or its weights.

Does Tinder still use Elo?
Tinder says its current system does not use the old Elo score. Elo is therefore not an accurate description of Tinder’s current matching system according to the company’s September 2026 Help Center explanation. Repeating the old Elo explanation as though it were Tinder’s present method overstates what the company says.
Is Tinder’s AI matching feature the same thing?
No. Tinder describes an optional, AI-powered feature that uses profile information, answers to questions, and activity to generate personalized Daily Drop recommendations. If a user opts in, it can also use tags from camera-roll photos. Tinder’s April 3, 2025 Help Center page says the feature is rolling out in select markets, not that it is available to all users; it also says users can review or delete the insights.

How does Hinge decide who to show you?
Hinge’s profiling disclosure names both information members provide and information generated through service use, including interactions such as likes, skips, and matches. It says the same process is used to recommend a member to other users. The disclosure explains examples of data and member control over discovery settings, but does not tell readers how those signals are weighted or provide a formula for predicting whom they will meet.
What does Bumble use to recommend profiles?
Bumble’s Australia privacy policy names profile information, app activity, photo verification, and device coordinates in connection with compatibility recommendations. Its Discover support page describes a more specific curated feature: recommendations based on interests, dating goals, communities, and previous matches, with four people highlighted as “Recommended for you.” Bumble advises completing a profile, but that is guidance—not evidence that a complete profile guarantees more matches or better recommendations.

What matching algorithms can—and cannot—tell you
A recommendation can help organize discovery or estimate the likelihood of an interaction. It does not certify that two people are compatible or predict that a match will become a successful relationship. The 2022 Harvard Data Science Review article Finding Love on a First Data: Matching Algorithms in Online Dating notes that commercial matching algorithms are mostly proprietary and that scientists are skeptical they can predict long-term relationship success. It discusses a 2017 study in which a machine-learning model offered some indication of selectivity and desirability but could not anticipate which people would connect in person.
That review also discusses risks that behavior-driven ranking could reproduce gender or racial bias, or narrow exposure by favoring majority patterns. These are research concerns, not proof that any named app has a particular measured bias. Tinder separately says its algorithm does not track social status, religion, or ethnicity; that is Tinder’s claim, not an independent audit.

There is no comparable, current statistic established here for the recommendation quality or relationship success of Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble. A valid cross-app accuracy ranking cannot be inferred from their public descriptions. The Gale–Shapley algorithm, associated with the work for which Lloyd Shapley and Alvin Roth received the 2012 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, is historical context—not evidence that Hinge or another current dating app uses that algorithm.
