There is no defensible universal installed price for data-center backup power in the available public sources. To estimate your facility’s cost, define the load, runtime, reliability target, and equipment included; price the complete architecture with current local engineering and vendor quotes; then compare capital and lifecycle costs using the same assumptions.
Define what the estimate must protect
Start with a written design basis. A quote is only meaningful when suppliers are pricing the same load, runtime, reliability service, and site conditions.
- Protected load: Record critical IT load in kW, the supporting equipment included, the load profile, and relevant power factor and voltage. State any growth allowance and distinguish the design load from current measured demand.
- Required runtime: Specify how long the system must support the load, and whether that duration is intended to bridge to a generator, cover a longer outage, or meet another facility requirement.
- Reliability and maintenance: Document the facility’s redundancy target and assumptions for concurrent maintenance and component failures. There is no universal target established by the sources cited here; use the facility’s engineering criteria.
- Project boundary: State whether the estimate includes utility switching, cooling and other critical auxiliaries, fuel storage, controls, site work, interconnection, land, taxes, and financing.
These inputs prevent a common mismatch: comparing equipment sized for different loads or runtimes, or treating an equipment-only price as though it covered a functioning backup system.
Map the architecture before pricing it
Identify each component between the utility supply and the loads that must remain powered. Depending on the facility design, the scope may include utility feeds and transfer equipment, UPS capacity and topology, batteries, generators, fuel storage, switchgear, paralleling equipment, controls, and critical cooling or other auxiliaries.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
UPS and batteries
UPS systems provide power conditioning and backup, commonly using inverters and battery banks; other designs can use rotary machines, fuel cells, or other technologies. Efficiency depends on design and loading, and oversized equipment can operate less efficiently at low load. The NREL report Data Center Energy Efficiency discusses these components and efficiency considerations. Battery-backed ride-through is often paired with another source for longer outages, but the architecture must follow the facility’s requirements rather than a universal template.
Generators and supporting equipment
In common architectures, standby generators provide power for longer interruptions, while transfer and paralleling gear, fuel systems, controls, and commissioning make the overall arrangement usable. A generator price alone does not represent the cost of this system. The 2007 U.S. EPA and ENERGY STAR report describes the roles of UPS and standby generators as system context, not as a prescription for every modern facility: Report to Congress on Server and Data Center Energy Efficiency.

Build a capital and lifecycle cost model
Separate the initial project budget from recurring and replacement costs. The historical NREL cost-of-ownership study separated capital, installation, maintenance, and fuel; that is a useful cost structure, but its small-system scope and 2014 publication date make it unsuitable as a current data-center price book: Backup Power Cost of Ownership Analysis and Incumbent Technology Comparison.
| Cost area | What to include |
|---|---|
| Equipment | UPS, batteries, generators, fuel storage, transfer and paralleling gear, switchgear, controls, and other equipment within the stated boundary. |
| Project delivery | Engineering, construction, permitting, commissioning, integration, and contingency. Identify whether site work and utility interconnection are included. |
| Annual operation | Planned maintenance, inspection and testing, fuel, fuel logistics, monitoring, and service contracts. |
| Replacement and end of life | Major component replacements over the analysis period and any end-of-life costs. Use project-specific schedules rather than assuming a universal component life. |
Declare the analysis period and use a consistent currency basis. State whether figures are nominal or real, what escalation and discount assumptions apply, and whether taxes, land, financing, or interconnection costs are excluded. Report installed capital cost separately from annual operating cost and lifecycle cost so readers can see both the upfront commitment and the longer-term total.

Compare designs on equivalent terms
Normalize every alternative to the same protected load and growth allowance, runtime, reliability and maintenance assumptions, site conditions, analysis period, and cost basis. A lower-cost design may simply be serving less load, supporting fewer hours, or excluding equipment and services included in another estimate.

Use modeling tools to inform, not replace, quotes
REopt can evaluate facility energy technologies and model energy-cost and outage-resilience outcomes from site inputs. Advanced users can adjust technology costs, efficiencies, analysis horizon, and financial parameters. Its results therefore depend on the inputs and assumptions selected; use the model to compare scenarios, then validate the design and budget with project-specific engineering and current local quotes.
The 2025 Annual Technology Baseline data provide technology-level cost and performance inputs, including capital and operating expenditures and financial assumptions. They are not turnkey installed quotations for a data-center backup project. For any live tool or data source, record the access date and the assumptions used.
Why historical figures do not establish today’s price
Published numbers can look precise while describing a very different system. The NREL 2014 cost study analyzed small backup systems; 78% of the systems it analyzed had been installed from 2010–2012 in the 4–6 kW range. Its modeled battery lifetime of five years and diesel and fuel-cell system lifetimes of 15 years were assumptions based on supplier replacement schedules for those modeled systems, not universal current replacement intervals. Those figures should not be used to price a modern data-center installation.
The study’s annualized costs also covered small-system scenarios with different runtimes, so they do not establish a current installed $/kW benchmark for data centers. The public sources cited here do not provide a current data-center-scale installed cost benchmark. A defensible budget should instead identify its load, runtime, redundancy, geography, date, scope, and assumptions—and be validated against current project quotes.
