Exchange rates can change your return even when a Chinese bank share’s price does not. Your result in your own currency reflects the share’s price change and dividends in their relevant currencies, translated at the exchange rates that apply when you invest and receive money. Currency-conversion costs can reduce it further.
How currency changes affect your return
Keep two components separate: the investment’s performance in its share or dividend currency, and the effect of converting those amounts into your own base currency. A share can rise in RMB yet deliver a smaller gain—or a loss—in your currency if RMB weakens enough. Conversely, RMB appreciation can lift the translated result even if the local share return is modest.
China Construction Bank (Asia)’s Stock Connect risk disclosure gives the flat-price case directly: an investor may lose money converting sale proceeds into local currency if RMB has depreciated, even when the RMB asset price is unchanged. The disclosure also identifies conversion costs as a possible drag on realized returns. Read the CCB (Asia) Stock Connect risk disclosure.

For a simplified investment with one purchase and one sale, the arithmetic is:
#1 Best Overall
Ending home-currency value = ending local-currency value × home-currency units per local-currency unit at the ending conversion rate.
For example, if the base currency is USD and the local currency is RMB, the rate must be quoted as USD per RMB for that multiplication. A rate quoted as RMB per USD is the inverse and requires division instead. The same convention should be used to translate the initial investment; compare the ending value with the initial home-currency outlay to assess the result. This is a calculation method, not a forecast.
Rank #2
- Convert the purchase amount into your base currency using the actual rate and costs for the purchase.
- Track the share-price change and any cash distributions in the currencies in which they are quoted or paid.
- Translate sale proceeds and each dividend into your base currency using the applicable conversion rate when each cash flow is received, and account for fees and any investor-specific taxes.
- Compare the net ending value with the original base-currency cost. For multiple dividends, translate each payment at its own applicable rate rather than assuming one rate for the whole holding period.
Share currency and dividend currency can differ
A share’s listing or trading currency does not necessarily determine the currency in which its dividend is declared or paid. Bank of China’s 2025 annual-report materials identify its H shares as Hong Kong-listed and traded in HKD, while the bank’s dividend materials provide an RMB payment option for H-share holders. See Bank of China’s 2025 annual report materials.
Bank of China’s 2025 final-dividend circular provides a specific example of how payment choices work: the dividend is declared in RMB, A-share dividends are paid in RMB, and H-share holders may choose RMB or HKD. For an HKD payment, the circular specifies a reference-rate calculation based on an average over designated working days before the currency election period begins. These are terms for that issuer and dividend, not a rule for every Chinese bank or later dividend. Consult the Bank of China 2025 final-dividend circular filed with HKEX and check how your broker handles the payment.
The amount you ultimately receive in your own currency can depend on the dividend option, the broker’s handling, your cash-account currency and any further conversion. A defined issuer exchange-rate convention does not necessarily remove later broker conversion or its costs.

A stronger or weaker RMB by itself does not establish that one bank share or share class is the better investment. To compare positions fairly, account for the full route from purchase to cash received:
- Share performance: local-market price change and cash distributions.
- Currency path: RMB against your actual base currency, and HKD against that currency where the holding or dividend is in HKD.
- Share class and market: A share or H share, its listing venue and trading currency, and whether your broker gives you access.
- Dividend terms: declared currency, available elections, the rate-fixing convention and payment date for that issuer and year.
- Realized costs and treatment: broker FX spread and fees, possible intermediate conversions, account currency, taxes and the timing of each cash flow.
For current issuer-specific details, Bank of China’s investor-relations financial-report index links to its latest listed interim and annual materials. Dividend procedures can change, so check the latest circular as well as your broker’s instructions before relying on a particular payment choice or conversion rate.
