A cryptocurrency remittance uses digital assets to move value across borders, but it usually involves more than sending crypto. The sender may convert local currency into crypto, the value moves through a blockchain or a provider’s internal ledger, and the recipient may need to convert it back or withdraw it in local currency. The route, total cost, timing, and risks depend on the asset, provider, destination, and local rules.
How do cryptocurrency remittances work?
A cross-border crypto transfer can be one link in a longer payment chain. Some money-transfer operators use crypto as a bridge between fiat currencies; that is one operating model, not a guarantee that every intermediary disappears or that every customer sends crypto directly from one personal wallet to another. The World Bank describes crypto assets as an alternative way to remit funds, make payments, manage cash-transfer programs, and store funds.
- The sender funds the transfer. The sender may buy crypto with local currency through an exchange or another virtual-asset service provider (VASP). What is available and how the conversion works depend on the sender’s location and provider.
- The value moves to the recipient or payout provider. It may move on a blockchain, or the provider may update its own internal ledger. When both customers use the same VASP, transfers are mostly recorded off-chain, according to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF). Such transfers usually avoid blockchain network fees and block-confirmation times, but that depends on the provider’s arrangements.
- The recipient accesses the value. The recipient may keep the crypto, spend it where accepted, or use an available service to convert it into local currency and withdraw or receive that money. Conversion and payout availability vary by corridor and provider.
This distinction matters: a blockchain transaction reaching an address does not by itself mean the recipient has usable local cash. A provider-ledger transfer may not create a public blockchain transaction at all.
What fees are involved in sending money with crypto?
There is no single fee for a crypto remittance. Costs can arise at several points, and a low blockchain network fee does not establish that the full remittance is inexpensive. Compare the amount the recipient can actually use after conversion and payout.

| Cost stage | What may affect the cost |
|---|---|
| Funding and crypto purchase | A purchase or on-ramp charge, plus the exchange-rate spread between the quoted rate and the rate applied to the conversion. |
| Transfer | For an on-chain transfer, a network fee and the time needed for confirmations may apply. A transfer between customers of the same VASP may instead be recorded internally and avoid network fees and block-confirmation time, depending on the provider. |
| Sale and local-currency conversion | A sale or off-ramp charge and the exchange-rate spread applied when crypto is converted into the recipient’s currency. |
| Payout and withdrawal | Wallet, bank, cash-out, or withdrawal costs may apply. Third-party charges and government taxes may also affect the amount received. |
The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) warns that a digital-wallet transfer promoted as free may still involve costs when value is converted into local currency or withdrawn. A quoted transfer fee alone therefore does not show the total cost.
How to compare the real cost
Compare options using the same sending and receiving countries, send amount, funding method, payout method, and time of day. Check the full exchange rate and every stated charge, then focus on the local-currency amount the recipient can use and when it will be available. Also check whether the recipient must open an account, convert the crypto, or meet withdrawal conditions before accessing the money.

For context, the World Bank’s Remittance Prices Worldwide homepage displayed a global average remittance cost of 6.36 percent in data last updated August 18, 2025. That is a broad benchmark for remittances, not a crypto-specific fee estimate or a quote for any particular corridor. The portal’s listed coverage—367 corridors from 48 sending countries to 105 receiving countries—describes its comparison data, not crypto’s market share.
In the United States, covered consumer remittance transfers generally have disclosure requirements that include relevant fees, the exchange rate, and the expected amount received. The CFPB also describes error-resolution rights for qualifying transfers. Whether those requirements apply depends on the provider and arrangement; legal protections vary by jurisdiction.

Is sending money with crypto safe?
“Safe” depends on the asset, custody arrangement, provider, transaction route, and recipient’s ability to cash out. A transfer can be exposed to several distinct risks; a blockchain confirmation is not a guarantee against price changes, fraud, provider problems, or payout delays.
- Price and conversion risk: The crypto’s value may change before the recipient converts it. Stablecoins are designed to track a reference value, but that design does not make them risk-free. The World Bank discusses both extreme price volatility and fraud-related losses among crypto consumers.
- Fraud and cybersecurity risk: A wrong destination address, impersonation, compromised account, or other fraud can result in loss. Verify the recipient and destination details through a trusted channel, secure provider accounts, and be wary of requests to redirect a payment. Do not assume a completed transfer can be reversed.
- Custody and provider risk: With a hosted service, the provider controls the account or records an internal-ledger balance. A provider failure, account restriction, or suspended withdrawals can affect access even if the displayed balance has not changed. The World Bank discusses crypto-service-provider failures and customer withdrawal suspensions.
- Settlement and cash-out risk: The recipient may face delays or be unable to convert or withdraw because of provider processing, local payment rails, availability, or withdrawal rules. Delivery of crypto and access to local cash are separate steps.
- Privacy and financial-crime controls: Public blockchains can provide transaction records, but wallet addresses are pseudonymous and the records do not necessarily identify who controls an address or explain a payment’s purpose. FATF notes that stablecoins can move across chains and jurisdictions; same-VASP transfers may be off-chain and visible only in the provider’s internal records.
- Consumer-protection differences: Do not assume protections for a traditional international money transfer apply to every crypto transaction or intermediary. Coverage depends on the transaction and jurisdiction.

- How much the recipient will receive in usable local currency after all conversions, fees, and withdrawals.
- Which exchange rate applies, when it is fixed, and whether the quote includes a spread.
- When the recipient can actually use the funds, not just when a crypto transfer is expected to settle.
- That the destination, payout method, and recipient are supported for the specific corridor.
- Who holds the funds at each stage, and what happens if a provider restricts an account or pauses withdrawals.
- What error-reporting or dispute process exists, whether a transfer can be corrected, and which consumer protections apply.
Traditional international wires, international money transfers, and remittances are common terms for conventional cross-border transfers. Compare a crypto route with a conventional option on the same corridor and payout conditions; no method’s headline fee alone establishes the better outcome.
