Engineered photonic-crystal hydrogels can show humidity changes through visible colour shifts. As the material absorbs water, it swells; as it dries, it contracts. That movement changes the optical structure and the colour it reflects. The approach was reported as research in 2008, not as a verified consumer humidity monitor.
What are the “crystals”?
They are not ordinary mineral crystals. The reported material is a composite opal: a photonic crystal made with polymer spheres embedded in a polyacrylamide hydrogel. Chemistry World’s 2008 account says the team, led by Yanlin Song at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, made styrene-based polymer spheres approximately 150 nm in size, soaked them in acrylamide solution, and used ultraviolet light to initiate polymerization. Chemistry World’s report describes how this produced the humidity-responsive structure.
How does humidity change the colour?
The hydrogel takes up water from humid air and swells. When the air becomes drier, it loses water and shrinks. Those changes extend or contract the photonic structure, altering how it interacts with visible light and therefore the colour seen. Song explained the mechanism this way: “When the humidity increases or decreases, the polyacrylamide swells or shrinks, which extends or contracts the structure.”

This is an assessment reported at the time, not a current evaluation of a marketed device.

What could a visual humidity sensor be used for?
A colour change could provide a visible indication of humidity without requiring the material itself to produce an electronic reading. The report points to food and electronics as settings where harmful condensation can be a concern, and presents inexpensive, accurate sensors as a possible application. These are proposed uses, not evidence that the material has been deployed in those settings or that its accuracy was measured.
How does it differ from a conventional humidity sensor?

Is it available as a product, and how well does it perform?
The reported work is a research approach, not a confirmed retail monitor. Chemistry World’s 28 January 2008 article gives no sensor accuracy, response time, humidity range, cycle life, or calibration requirements. It reports a sphere size of approximately 150 nm, which describes how the material was constructed—not how well a sensor performs. The report cites E.
