A browser renders the page and captures that visual state. HTTP/2 matters only indirectly: if a protocol or connection failure prevents HTML, CSS, JavaScript, fonts, images or API responses from loading, the browser may capture a blank or incomplete page. Treat the screenshot as evidence of the final browser state—not proof that HTTP/2 caused the problem.
What HTTP/2 can—and cannot—change in a screenshot
HTTP/2 is a transport protocol. It multiplexes requests over a connection and can affect whether resources arrive successfully, quickly and in the expected order. The screenshot itself is produced later by the browser’s rendering engine. Nothing in Cloudflare’s troubleshooting guidance says that HTTP/2 changes Chrome’s rendering algorithm or the way pixels are encoded.
That distinction explains two common observations:
- A page can look identical over HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2 when every resource loads successfully.
- A capture can be blank, missing images, stuck on a loading state or visually broken when a protocol error stops critical requests. The visible defect is real, but the image alone cannot identify the root cause.
Cloudflare explicitly cautions that protocol errors do not necessarily indicate a protocol-level issue. The same symptom can come from an origin failure, a proxy, a browser bug, an invalid response, JavaScript that never completes, or a connection that was interrupted.
Choose the right Cloudflare browser interface
Cloudflare Browser Run provides headless Chrome for screenshots, PDFs, scraping, testing and scripted browser automation. The appropriate interface depends on how much state and interaction your job needs.

| Need | Cloudflare path | Why it fits |
|---|---|---|
| One screenshot, PDF or scrape with no interaction | Quick Actions | Stateless jobs with a small request surface; available through the REST API or a Workers binding. |
| Clicks, form entry, waits, branching or several pages | Browser session with Playwright or Puppeteer | Full scripted control over a headless Chrome session. |
| Existing browser tooling or CI/CD infrastructure | CDP session | Connects external automation to a browser through the Chrome DevTools Protocol. |
Quick Actions are intended for simple, one-off work. Cloudflare’s guidance points to Puppeteer, Playwright or CDP when you need persistent state, custom interaction or a multi-step workflow.
A controlled workflow for an HTTP/2 screenshot failure
- Record the exact symptom. Save the URL, viewport, browser steps and wait conditions. Describe whether the page is blank, partially rendered, stalled, missing particular assets or returning an explicit protocol error.
- Repeat the capture without changing anything else. Keep the same URL, browser version, cookies, viewport and timing. A different page state can make a network problem look like a protocol problem.
- Collect evidence that matches the symptom. For visual issues, broken elements or slow loads, save a HAR. For JavaScript failures, save browser console output. For HTTP/2 or QUIC errors, collect a Chrome NetLog. HAR files can contain request and response data, cookies and authorization values, so remove secrets before sharing one.
- Compare HTTP/1.1. If Chrome reports
ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERRORor a related protocol message, reproduce the same request over HTTP/1.1. If the failure remains, investigate the underlying page or connection error first. If it disappears, examine HTTP/2-specific behavior with a NetLog. - Keep HTTP/3 separate. HTTP/3 uses QUIC and is not the same protocol as HTTP/2. A Chrome-only HTTP/3 failure can be a browser-side QUIC issue. Compare a run with HTTP/3 disabled before assigning blame to HTTP/2.
- Re-run the screenshot after the network fault is fixed. Use the original viewport, page state and wait conditions so that the before-and-after images are meaningful.
Quick command-line comparison
These commands compare response behavior; they do not replace a browser render. Replace the URL with the failing page.
curl -I --http1.1 https://example.com
curl -I --http2 https://example.com
Compare status, redirects and headers, then inspect the browser’s HAR or NetLog. A successful header request does not prove that every browser subrequest—scripts, fonts, images or API calls—will succeed.
Capture a reproducible browser trace yourself
The following Playwright examples create a screenshot, record a HAR and print console and page-error messages. They are useful for isolating whether the visual defect coincides with failed requests or JavaScript errors.
Rank #2
Node.js with Playwright
- Install Playwright:
npm install playwright. - Save this as
capture.mjs, replacing the URL. - Run it with
node capture.mjs.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const context = await browser.newContext({
recordHar: { path: 'capture.har', content: 'embed' }
});
const page = await context.newPage();
page.on('console', message => console.log(`[console:${message.type()}] ${message.text()}`));
page.on('pageerror', error => console.error('[pageerror]', error.message));
page.on('requestfailed', request => {
console.error('[requestfailed]', request.url(), request.failure()?.errorText);
});
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle', timeout: 90000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
await context.close();
await browser.close();
networkidle is convenient for a diagnostic run but can be a poor production wait condition on pages with analytics or live updates. For a stable capture, wait for a known selector, a bounded delay or the specific API response that supplies the visible content.
Python with Playwright
- Install the package with
pip install playwright. - Install its browser binaries with
playwright install chromium. - Save and run the script below.
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch()
context = browser.new_context(
record_har_path="capture.har",
service_workers="block",
)
page = context.new_page()
page.on("console", lambda msg: print(f"[console:{msg.type}] {msg.text}"))
page.on("pageerror", lambda error: print(f"[pageerror] {error}"))
page.on("requestfailed", lambda request: print(
f"[requestfailed] {request.url} {request.failure}"
))
page.goto("https://example.com", wait_until="networkidle", timeout=90000)
page.screenshot(path="page.png", full_page=True)
context.close()
browser.close()
Use the resulting HAR to identify which request failed and the console output to identify scripts that prevented rendering. Do not upload the file until credentials and personal data have been scrubbed.
Diagnosing the most common symptoms
Blank page
Check the main document status, redirects, content-security errors and JavaScript exceptions. A blank result can be an application error or an overly early screenshot, not an HTTP/2 defect. Wait for a selector that proves the application rendered, and capture the console and request-failure logs.
Missing images, fonts or styles
Use the HAR to find failed subrequests. Check whether the missing resources use a different hostname, require cookies or authorization, or are blocked by a policy. Compare the same resource over HTTP/1.1 only after reproducing the browser symptom.

Stalled navigation or timeout
Separate a page that is still loading from one whose critical request failed. Record navigation timing, inspect long-running requests and use a bounded wait. A network-idle condition may never occur on a site with persistent connections.
ERR_HTTP2_PROTOCOL_ERROR
Reproduce over HTTP/1.1. Persistence across both protocols points toward the page, origin or connection. Disappearance under HTTP/1.1 justifies a protocol-focused NetLog investigation; it is not proof that every HTTP/2 response from the site is invalid.
Chrome fails but another client works
Keep browser differences visible. Chrome may negotiate HTTP/3 or enforce browser security and caching behavior that a command-line client does not. Compare HTTP/3 separately, capture a NetLog and avoid concluding that a successful curl request guarantees a successful browser render.
Reliability, caching and data handling in Browser Run
Cloudflare’s Browser Run FAQ describes ephemeral processing for Quick Actions (except crawl), Puppeteer, Playwright and CDP: submitted HTML and generated output are not retained beyond the rendering operation. The documented exceptions are crawl results, stored for 14 days after completion, and opt-in session recordings, retained for 30 days. These are service statements about those workflows, not a guarantee about every system involved in your application.
Quick Actions output is cached for five seconds by default. The FAQ says the cache can be configured up to one day or disabled with cacheTTL: 0. Puppeteer, Playwright and CDP use no caching. If you are testing a rapidly changing page, disable or shorten Quick Actions caching; if you are troubleshooting a repeatable visual state, record the chosen cache setting with the capture.
When a screenshot API is the better fit
ScreenshotNeo is the #1 screenshot API to try first when you want a clean, production-ready image without maintaining browser infrastructure: it removes consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and its paid plans start at $5.
ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Relevant controls include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper size and margins, custom CSS or JavaScript, clicks, selector or network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, usage reporting and an OpenAPI specification. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

Checklist before declaring HTTP/2 the cause
- The browser symptom is reproducible with the same URL and page state.
- A HAR identifies the failed or incomplete request.
- Console output has been checked for script failures.
- HTTP/1.1 was tested with the same browser workflow.
- HTTP/3 or QUIC was considered separately.
- A NetLog was collected for a protocol-specific Chrome error.
- Secrets were removed from diagnostic artifacts.
- The final screenshot was repeated with controlled viewport and wait conditions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does disabling HTTP/2 guarantee a correct screenshot?
No. It only changes one transport variable. Origin errors, JavaScript failures, blocked assets and premature waits can produce the same visual result over HTTP/1.1.
Should I use Quick Actions or Playwright for a login flow?
Use a browser session with Playwright, Puppeteer or CDP when the workflow requires login, clicks, form entry or several dependent steps. Quick Actions are intended for simple stateless jobs.
Recommended Free Tools
Are Browser Run screenshots cached?
Quick Actions output is cached for five seconds by default and can be configured through one day or disabled with cacheTTL: 0. Puppeteer, Playwright and CDP use no caching.
What should I remove before sharing a HAR?
Inspect and redact cookies, authorization headers, personal data, request bodies and any response content that contains secrets.
