Nuclear fusion is not yet supplying electricity to a public grid. The U.S. Department of Energy’s June 2026 roadmap sets out a pathway intended to support a U.S. fusion pilot power plant in the mid-2030s. That is a conditional planning target—not a guaranteed date for routine commercial power.
What does “close to the grid” mean?
Fusion has moved beyond a purely scientific question into the engineering and planning of future power plants, but a successful plasma experiment is not the same as grid electricity. Several distinct milestones are often compressed into one headline:
- Plasma performance: an experiment achieves relevant fusion conditions or a specified plasma energy gain.
- Net electric generation: a plant produces more electricity than its own systems consume, with output available for export.
- Pilot-plant operation: an integrated facility demonstrates generation, fuel handling, component maintenance, and repeated operation.
- Commercial supply: plants operate reliably and economically under the applicable licences and can deliver electricity when the grid needs it.
These are not interchangeable accomplishments. The National Academies’ staged plan for a U.S. pilot plant treats net electricity, fuel-cycle performance, maintenance, and repeated operation through environmental cycles as separate requirements.
What is the current timeline?
U.S. pilot-plant pathway: mid-2030s target
The finalized U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Fusion Science and Technology Roadmap, released June 9, 2026, describes a pathway intended to support a U.S. fusion pilot power plant in the mid-2030s. It organizes priorities across science, technology, infrastructure, workforce, and commercialization, with near-term actions over 2–3 years, mid-term actions over 3–5 years, and long-term actions over 5–10 years. DOE says the roadmap’s milestones and timelines depend on future public-private partnerships and congressional appropriations. The mid-2030s date should therefore be read as a program objective, not a forecast that commercial electricity will be available then.

ITER: experimental programme, not a power station
ITER is an experimental facility designed to demonstrate fusion’s scientific and technological feasibility; it is not a power plant intended to sell electricity. DOE’s June 2026 roadmap states that ITER’s first plasma was delayed until the mid-2030s and its deuterium-tritium operations until the end of the 2030s. Those are ITER programme milestones, not dates for grid supply. At its June 2026 Council meeting, ITER reported continuing construction and assembly, preparation for commissioning, and regulatory engagement.
The dates describe different programmes and different outcomes. A first plasma, a deuterium-tritium experiment, a pilot plant exporting net electricity, and a commercial plant providing reliable power each require additional steps.
What has to work before a fusion plant can export electricity?
DOE groups the remaining work into six challenge areas: structural materials, plasma-facing components, confinement systems, fuel cycle, blankets, and plant engineering and integration. Progress in one area alone cannot establish that a complete, maintainable power plant is ready.

Plasma performance and heat exhaust
A plant must sustain relevant plasma conditions and manage the resulting heat at a scale and duration useful to an integrated facility. A short-lived experimental result does not by itself show that the system can run repeatedly or deliver predictable output.
Materials and replaceable components
Neutron irradiation and extreme heat place demanding loads on structural materials, plasma-facing components, blankets, divertors, and other in-vessel systems. A power plant needs components that last long enough for practical operation and can be inspected, maintained, or replaced without undermining its availability.
Fuel cycle, including tritium for deuterium-tritium designs
For designs using deuterium and tritium, the plant must handle and recycle fuel and ultimately breed enough tritium to support continued operation. Demonstrating fusion reactions is not the same as demonstrating a self-sustaining practical fuel supply.

Net electricity rather than plasma gain
Energy released in the plasma is not the same as electricity delivered to the grid. The plant must also power its own systems and convert fusion energy into usable electricity; the exported amount must remain positive after those internal demands are accounted for.
Integration, maintenance, licensing, and availability
A grid resource must operate as a complete facility, tolerate repeated operating cycles, support component maintenance, and demonstrate predictable availability and a viable cost basis. Licensing and non-proliferation arrangements also need to advance alongside technical readiness.

What do pilot-plant performance goals actually show?
The National Academies’ 2021 report Bringing Fusion to the U.S. Grid gives staged pilot-plant recommendations, not a record of what a facility has already achieved. Its Phase 1b goal is at least 50 MWe peak electricity with Qe > 1 for at least three hours. Later phases add expectations such as sustained output across environmental cycles and component maintenance. These targets help clarify what a pilot plant would need to demonstrate; they do not promise that a particular company or programme will meet them on a particular schedule.

- True to the mission of the Real Grade line to make these larger than life characters “real”, the RG Evangelion features intricate linked parts construction to represent the relaxation and contraction of muscle fibers resulting in a very close emulation of human-joints.
- The movement of the spine and shoulder blades are linked to the armor parts and follow the movement of the arms and chest, shifting as needed to prevent parts from obstructing each other. From this, realistic humanoid crouching and running poses can be re-created for EVA Unit-00.
- DX Set features 2nd Experimental Positron Cannon as well as Type G equipment for RG Evangelion Unit-01to recreate the apperaance during Operation Yashima
- Includes parts from "Evangelion 1. 0 You are(Not) Alone" and after being upgraded, Pallet Rifle, 2 Progressive Knives, Umbilical Cable, and 6 types of hands in different expressions.
- Only product with affixed official Bluefin and Bandai Namco label has been thoroughly tested for safety and meets all North American consumer product safety regulations and entitles the purchaser to product support assistance
In this context, Qe concerns energy gain at the plant’s electric-output level, not simply the energy released by the plasma. A claim about plasma gain should not be treated as proof of net electric output unless the stated measure includes the plant’s electrical inputs and the exported power.

When a project or roadmap announces a future date, check that its milestone matches the outcome you care about. Useful questions include:
- Is the claim about plasma performance, net electricity, a pilot plant, or commercial supply?
- Is the machine an experiment, an integrated pilot facility, or a plant intended for routine operation?
- Does the date refer to expected first operation or an achievement already demonstrated?
- What pulse duration and repetition rate are planned, and is sustained or repeatable operation included?
- For a deuterium-tritium design, what fuel-cycle evidence—including tritium handling and breeding—is available?
- Are component lifetime, maintenance, and plant availability addressed?
- Is the date attached to a funded, licensed project schedule, or is it a roadmap aspiration that depends on future funding and partnerships?
DOE’s roadmap provides categories and milestones for assessing technical gaps, while the National Academies’ phases distinguish performance goals for a pilot plant. Together, they make clear why an announced fusion milestone should not automatically be described as a date for grid power.

- Finished model measures approximately 184mm in length
What should readers expect next?
The near-term significance of DOE’s roadmap is its attempt to coordinate the science, components, fuel-cycle work, infrastructure, workforce, and industrial capabilities needed for pilot-plant development. DOE says more than 800 researchers, engineers, and industry stakeholders contributed to the roadmap; that figure describes participation in preparing the plan, not a measurement of technical readiness.
The most defensible expectation is continued progress toward pilot-plant engineering, with timing contingent on technical results, partnerships, appropriations, and regulatory work. Even if a pilot facility meets its goals, reliable commercial supply would still require evidence of integrated operation, maintainability, availability, and a viable operating model.
