Clay demonstrates an agent-to-UI pattern: instead of returning a paragraph or executable markup, a model emits JSON describing components from a catalog the host controls. A React client validates and renders those components as usable widgets; when a user changes one, the host can send the event back so the agent recomputes related values. The practical difference is that a trip-budget slider can update a set of connected figures without asking the user to re-prompt for each calculation.
How Clay’s A2UI loop works
The described loop has four parts: a prompt goes to a model, the model returns an A2UI message, a React renderer displays the resulting widgets, and a widget event can trigger another agent turn. The model supplies a declarative interface description, not HTML, JSX, or executable code. The project interface is described as a chat rail, generated surface, and inspector that exposes the exact messages exchanged.
In the author’s words, “The model never sends code. It sends JSON that names components from a catalog the host already owns.” This is a description of Clay’s design, not an independent review of its repository.

An example message contains a surfaceUpdate with a surface ID and a flat list of components, a dataModelUpdate with values for that surface, and a short text field. Components carry IDs; containers refer to children by ID rather than embedding nested component objects. That structure gives the host a straightforward way to replace or update a component by ID.

Interactive widgets can bind to dotted paths in the data model. The stated invariant is that a widget’s displayed value matches the stored value at its bound path. In practice, the component tree describes what to render, while the data model holds the values those controls display or update.
The host-owned component catalog
The illustrated catalog has 10 component types: Column, Row, Text, Slider, Toggle, Table, BarChart, Stat, Badge, and Button. The author says the catalog is reused in the model prompt, server-side Zod schemas, and client allowlist. The client’s exhaustive TypeScript registry is intended to make a missing widget implementation a compile-time issue.
This is a constrained vocabulary rather than a general-purpose layout language. Adding a new kind of control therefore means changing the host’s supported catalog and implementation, rather than asking the model to invent arbitrary UI code.

What happens when a user changes a widget
Clay’s interaction path is designed so the host owns the user’s immediate change and the model supplies dependent updates. For the slider flow described by the author:
- The client optimistically writes the slider’s new value to its bound data-model path.
- The client sends the event to
/api/interact. - The server seeds the changed bound value before asking the model to recompute related values.
- The model response includes the full component list and a data-model update.
- The client compares numerical fields in other components, ignoring the touched component and slider range metadata such as
min, max, andstep, then synchronizes bound widget values from the data model.
For a browser example, Harish Kotra reports that changing the hotel-per-night slider from ₹2,500 to ₹6,000 changed the trip total from ₹28,000 to ₹38,500 and the remaining budget from ₹12,000 to ₹1,500. He also reports updates to the per-day average, table, chart, and status badge. These are the author’s reported results; they were not independently reproduced here. Kotra says the client did not calculate those downstream numbers itself.
Two runtime choices for session state
The author describes two runtimes sharing the same turn engine, prompt, and guardrails. The distinction is where session state lives, not a different A2UI protocol.

| Runtime | Session state | What the author’s description establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Workers | A session ID routes to a Cloudflare Durable Object, with SQLite-backed state. | The author presents this as the persistent session arrangement. |
| Node | A process-local Map owns session state. |
The author presents this as a simpler fallback that illustrates that Durable Objects are not required to define the protocol. |
The implementation article names Cloudflare Agents SDK 0.24.0 as the version used at that time. That is a historical implementation detail, not a statement about the current release. The described model request uses a configurable {baseUrl}/chat/completions endpoint, requests a JSON-object response format, and disables streaming. Particle.ai, LM Studio, Ollama, and Gemini’s OpenAI-compatible endpoint are cited as compatible examples in the author’s account; their current compatibility and endpoint behavior are not independently verified here. Settings include endpoint, model, and API key, and the author says the key is kept out of browser responses.

The design separates malformed emissions from contract violations. That distinction matters: retrying a broken JSON emission can be useful, while retrying an unsupported component or forbidden prop could obscure the host’s refusal boundary.
Malformed emissions may be retried
For defects such as truncated JSON or a missing component ID, the described system may ask the model again up to three attempts. According to the author, the system does not patch the rejected payload; the previous surface remains visible and the inspector records the refusal.

Contract violations are refused
Unknown component names, forbidden props, injection-like patterns, duplicate IDs, dangling child references, or multiple roots are described as contract violations that receive a final refusal. The approach is an allowlist and validation strategy: render only known widgets and reject structures outside the expected contract.
It should not be read as proof that the application is secure. The evidence here is the project author’s implementation account and reported tests, not an external security audit or independent source-code review.

What the verifier checks—and what it cannot guarantee
Kotra reports that npm run verify runs 11 checks against a live model. The checks cover whether different prompts can produce different component-type sets, whether repeated prompts can produce different trees within the same schema, whether a slider changes at least two other components’ numeric values, whether unsupported components are rejected, and whether script-like or event-handler-like payloads stay out of the renderable surface.

The author cautions that this suite depends on model output and occasionally fails. One reported run failed when an interaction turn returned two components in one component body. Accordingly, the verifier is evidence that the project exercises generation and interaction paths, not evidence of a stable pass rate or deterministic behavior.
Implementation lessons reported by the author
- Read an incoming request body once before forwarding it.
- Treat SDK state replacement as a full replacement rather than an implicit merge.
- Explicitly pass local environment values to the development runtime.
- Classify malformed emissions separately from contract violations so retry behavior does not erase a meaningful refusal.
- Account for development friction the author encountered, including Node’s TypeScript stripping, package peer dependencies, shared Chrome debug ports, and test probes that mistakenly counted a slider’s own displayed number as a dependent change.
When this pattern is useful
Clay’s design is most relevant when an application needs an agent to produce a bounded, interactive surface rather than a one-off textual answer. The host retains control over what can render, while the model can choose among supported components and return data that drives them.
| Design choice | Clay’s described approach | Trade-off for an implementer |
|---|---|---|
| Model output | Host-owned component names and props in JSON. | Constrained output is easier to validate and render than generated executable markup, but the model cannot invent unsupported controls. |
| Component structure | Flat component list with ID-linked children. | Can simplify generation and replace-by-ID updates; the host must validate references and uniqueness. |
| Interaction | Host seeds the changed bound value, then asks the model to recompute dependencies. | The model can return related values, but correctness still depends on a valid response and the host’s consistency checks. |
| Invalid output | Retry malformed emissions; refuse contract violations without silently repairing the payload. | Preserves a visible failure boundary, though live model variability can interrupt a turn. |
| Session storage | Durable Object-backed state in Workers or a process-local Map in Node. | Persistent session storage and a simpler fallback serve different runtime needs while sharing the turn engine. |
The pattern is not a claim that a model should be trusted to write arbitrary interface code. Its defining choice is the opposite: the host defines a small rendering language, validates it, and decides which interactions can enter the next agent turn.
