To livestream a church service on YouTube, enable live streaming on the church’s verified channel, choose webcam, encoder, or mobile streaming to match the service setup, and rehearse the complete audio and video path in a private stream before service day. Plan music permissions separately: a YouTube video being available does not grant permission to use it in worship or a replay.
Choose the streaming method that fits your service

YouTube describes webcam streaming as a quick computer-based option and encoder streaming as a way to use external production hardware. Equipment depends on the signal path: a webcam setup does not inherently require a capture card, while some external-camera arrangements may use one. There is no universal church equipment list.
Enable YouTube livestreaming before the service date
YouTube Help says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days to enable livestreaming; the streamer must be at least 16. YouTube’s mobile guidance lists a threshold of at least 50 subscribers and says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. These conditions can change, so check YouTube Help for the current rules, particularly if you plan to stream from a phone. The current mobile guidance should take precedence over older guidance that gives a different subscriber threshold.

Do not wait until the day of worship to enable the feature. Once it is available, open YouTube Studio and select the streaming method you intend to use. If you will use an encoder, connect the production setup using the stream-key workflow shown in YouTube Studio; keep the stream key private and enter it only in the chosen encoder.

Prepare the service and rehearse the full setup
- Choose a camera position. Frame the pulpit, altar, musicians, or other parts of the service viewers need to see. Check the view from the platform preview rather than relying only on the camera’s screen.
- Plan the audio route. Decide whether the stream will use the camera or computer microphone, or audio from the church soundboard through suitable audio hardware. Listen for clear speech as well as music; a room that sounds acceptable in person may not produce intelligible audio on stream.
- Check the venue connection and lighting. Google’s livestream checklist recommends testing the internet connection, camera framing, audio capture, and lighting together. The cited guidance does not establish a universal minimum bandwidth, so test the connection at the venue with the actual setup instead of relying on a generic threshold.
- Run a private rehearsal. Use YouTube Studio’s private-stream option and test the complete route from microphones and cameras through the computer or encoder to the YouTube preview. Confirm picture, speech, and music before the service.
- Assign someone to monitor. Have a responsible person watch the running stream and respond if picture or sound fails. Schedule the event and share its link once the setup is ready.
Check copyright and music permissions
Music rights require separate attention before a service is streamed or made available for replay. The Church of England says copyrighted material, including music, requires a licence and identifies a CCLI Streaming Licence for live worship music on YouTube or Facebook. United Methodist Church guidance says copyrighted content needs written permission or a streaming licence that specifically covers the use; it also cautions that a video being available on YouTube does not give a church permission to use it in worship. Church of Scotland guidance identifies CCLI and OneLicense routes for some covered music.
None of these sources establishes that one licence covers every church, repertoire, territory, performance type, platform, or replay. Before streaming, verify the exact songs and uses with the rights holder or licensing organization, including whether live performance and archived replay are covered in your country. Confirm permissions for other copyrighted material used in the service as well.
