Choose the approach based on whether you need a quality audit, a test of behavior, or a repeatable CI run.
Choose the right Chrome testing approach
| Need | Use | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect a page or investigate a defect manually | Chrome DevTools | What the page is doing in the browser, plus interactive Lighthouse audits. |
| Audit page quality or track audit regressions | Lighthouse; optionally Lighthouse CI | Audit findings for areas including performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO. |
| Test clicks, typing, navigation, and other browser behavior | Puppeteer or a WebDriver framework connected through ChromeDriver | Whether scripted browser interactions and user journeys behave as expected. |
| Run automation against a controlled Chrome build in CI | Chrome for Testing with Headless Chrome and an automation framework | A version-selected browser environment for repeatable runs. |
These tools answer different questions. An audit report can highlight quality issues, but it does not establish that every user journey works. An interaction test can check a specific journey, but it is not a substitute for an audit across Lighthouse categories.
Inspect a page and run Lighthouse in DevTools
For an initial manual check, open the site in Chrome, open DevTools, and select the Lighthouse panel. Choose the audit settings relevant to your question and run an audit. The panel supports three modes:
- Navigation: audits a normal page load.
- Timespan: records a period of activity, useful when you want to audit an interaction rather than only the initial load.
- Snapshot: audits the page’s current state.
DevTools is useful when the page requires a local environment or authentication: you can inspect and audit the page in the browser session where you have opened it. Lighthouse reports cover performance, accessibility, best practices, SEO, and related metrics. Treat the report as diagnostic guidance, then verify fixes against the actual experience and any relevant user flows.

Make comparisons meaningful
- Record the audit mode, settings, page state, and other conditions you used.
- Keep those conditions consistent when comparing results.
- Change one thing at a time and rerun the audit.
If the page state or audit setup changes between runs, the results may not be directly comparable. A Lighthouse score alone does not explain every cause or prove a fix works for every visitor.
Automate Lighthouse audits
Lighthouse can run from its command line or as a Node module, as well as from DevTools. Scripted runs are useful for repeatable checks and for incorporating audits into development workflows. Lighthouse CI can help teams detect regressions over time. For pages that need a logged-in session or a local browser context, the DevTools workflow may be more suitable than a standalone scripted audit.
Keep the audit configuration and page conditions consistent when using results to judge changes. Use Lighthouse to find and track quality issues; use browser interaction tests to verify that features and journeys work.

Test browser interactions with Chrome automation
Puppeteer
Puppeteer is a JavaScript library for automating Chrome through the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) or WebDriver BiDi. It supports actions such as navigating, clicking, typing, taking screenshots, generating PDFs, and intercepting network traffic. It is a natural fit when your team wants a JavaScript API for browser workflows.
ChromeDriver and WebDriver frameworks
ChromeDriver implements W3C WebDriver and WebDriver BiDi and connects Chrome to automation frameworks such as Selenium or WebdriverIO. Consider it when your existing test suite is built around a WebDriver framework rather than Puppeteer’s API.
For either route, design tests around the behavior you need to verify: for example, whether a user can navigate to a page, complete a form, and reach the expected result. A successful browser launch is only a prerequisite; it does not by itself demonstrate that the site’s workflow passed.

Use Chrome for Testing for version-pinned runs
Chrome for Testing is a Chrome flavor intended for testing and automation. Its versioned browser downloads let a team select a browser version instead of relying on a regular Chrome installation that may update automatically. Pairing a selected Chrome for Testing binary with Headless mode and Puppeteer or ChromeDriver is a practical option for Chrome-only automated runs.
Headless Chrome runs without a visible interface, which makes it useful in servers, containers, and CI. Modern Headless uses the same browser implementation as headful Chrome, according to Chrome’s official overview. For a repeatable pipeline, manage the browser version used by the job deliberately and keep it aligned with the version your tests are meant to cover.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun tests in CI reliably
- Pick the test type first. Use Lighthouse for audits and an automation framework for user-flow behavior.
- Control the browser version when consistency matters. Use Chrome for Testing rather than depending on an automatically updated desktop installation.
- Choose the framework that fits your existing stack. Puppeteer offers a JavaScript API; ChromeDriver connects Chrome to WebDriver frameworks such as Selenium and WebdriverIO.
- Use Headless for unattended environments. It is suited to servers, containers, and CI where a visible browser window is not needed.
- Separate audit failures from workflow failures. A Lighthouse finding and a broken scripted user journey are different signals and should be investigated as such.
Chrome releases, supported protocols, and DevTools features can change. Check the official Chrome for Developers documentation for the current implementation details when selecting browser builds or configuring an automation stack.

Screenshot a page without setting up browser automation
If your immediate task is to obtain a page image rather than test a user interaction, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot is useful for visual review or a report, but it does not replace a Lighthouse audit or an end-to-end test.
Or skip the browser setup:
Use the ScreenshotNeo API for a one-request capture; see the API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets are removed before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.
Troubleshoot common testing problems
The browser updates and CI results change
A regular Chrome installation may auto-update, changing the browser under test. Use a versioned Chrome for Testing download when the run needs a selected browser version.

The browser cannot launch in a server or container
A visible desktop interface is not required for unattended runs. Use Headless Chrome in server, container, or CI environments, and verify that the selected automation framework is connecting to the intended Chrome binary.
A Lighthouse result does not match the question you are asking
Check the selected mode: Navigation audits a load, Timespan records activity, and Snapshot audits the current page state. Record the setup and rerun with the appropriate mode before comparing results.
A good audit result does not prove a flow works
Lighthouse is an audit and improvement guide, not proof that every journey works. Add a browser automation test with Puppeteer or a WebDriver framework for the specific interaction sequence that matters.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A scripted test cannot connect to Chrome
Check that ChromeDriver or the Puppeteer configuration is paired with the intended browser and that the framework is using the connection method you selected: CDP or WebDriver BiDi for Puppeteer, or WebDriver through ChromeDriver for frameworks such as Selenium and WebdriverIO.
