It highlights differences for you to review; a diff is a prompt to decide whether a change is intentional, not an automatic verdict that something is broken.
What Chromatic treats as a visual test
A Storybook story defines a repeatable component state, so Chromatic can use it as a test case. For each configured test, Chromatic loads the story in a cloud browser, waits for the interface to render, captures its appearance, and compares that snapshot with the baseline for the same test. Chromatic describes visual tests as “capturing snapshots of every test within a cloud browser environment” in its Visual tests documentation.
The screenshot is tied to test and build context. The comparison is not simply against any earlier image: Chromatic uses the relevant baseline from the build and branch history. In UI Tests, a branch build is compared with a baseline in its ancestry; accepted changes become the baseline for later checks. See the Chromatic documentation and Quickstart.
What happens from story to visual diff
- Stories supply the states. You write Storybook stories that represent the component appearances worth checking.
- A build is uploaded. Chromatic runs the stories as visual tests in its cloud-browser environment.
- The page is allowed to settle. Chromatic uses readiness heuristics, including network inactivity, and waits for Storybook interaction tests’
playfunctions to finish. - A snapshot is captured. The rendered UI is captured at the configured browser and viewport.
- The snapshot is compared. Chromatic compares it with the matching baseline and highlights visual differences.
- You resolve the change. Accept an intentional visual update to advance the baseline, or correct an unintended regression.
Capture readiness is an estimate, not a guarantee that every page’s asynchronous behavior has finished. CSS animations, transitions, videos, and GIFs are paused to reduce noisy differences, but JavaScript-driven animation may continue and can make captures inconsistent. Chromatic’s Snapshots documentation covers capture behavior and its caveats.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
How Chromatic decides whether a pixel is different
Chromatic’s diffThreshold controls the color difference tolerated before a pixel is counted as changed. Its documented default is .063. The comparison considers color distance in YIQ color space at corresponding image coordinates, and anti-aliased pixels are ignored by default; configuration can include them. This threshold is not the percentage of the screenshot that must change. See Chromatic’s threshold documentation.
| Threshold choice | Likely effect | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lower than the default | More sensitive to subtle color differences | Can produce more false positives from rendering variation. |
| Higher than the default | More tolerant of color differences | Can miss subtle changes you intended to catch. |
There is no universal best threshold: choose based on the visual precision your project needs, then inspect whether reported diffs are meaningful. Do not interpret .063 as “6.3% of pixels may change”; it describes color-difference tolerance, not the share of the image allowed to differ.

Which baseline Chromatic uses
Browser and viewport context
Chromatic compares a browser snapshot with that browser’s baseline, rather than comparing a Chrome image directly against a Firefox image. Browser, device, operating-system, and viewport rendering can vary, so each configured context has a corresponding baseline. Adding browser or viewport coverage can reveal more issues, but it also means more context-specific snapshots to maintain and review. Chromatic explains this in its Browsers documentation.
Build and branch history
For branch-based UI Tests, Chromatic uses baseline history in the branch’s ancestry. When a change is reviewed and accepted, the accepted result advances the baseline used in subsequent checks. The Storybook addon can synchronize accepted local baselines to the cloud; its workflow is documented in Chromatic’s docs and its Visual Tests addon guide.

How to make captures more reliable
- Make stories deterministic. Keep data, component state, and interaction outcomes stable between builds.
- Wait for the intended state. Use the story’s interaction flow and ensure the expected content is present before capture; Chromatic waits for interaction
playfunctions and uses readiness heuristics. - Control JavaScript animation. CSS effects and media are paused, but JavaScript-driven motion may need to be disabled or brought to a known frame by your test setup.
- Set sensitivity deliberately. Lower thresholds can catch smaller color differences but increase noise; higher thresholds reduce noise at the cost of potentially overlooking subtle changes.
- Choose coverage intentionally. Each additional browser or viewport adds useful context, but also creates its own baseline and review surface.
What a visual diff does—and does not—tell you
A diff means the captured appearance differs from its matching baseline under the configured comparison. It does not identify whether the change is a defect, a desired redesign, or an unstable capture. Review the highlighted area in context: if the change is intentional, accept it; if not, fix the underlying UI or test instability. Also remember that a Chromatic capture can differ from Storybook’s Canvas view because the capture environment and readiness conditions are not necessarily identical.
