ChatGPT helped dog owner Paul Conyngham plan research into his dog Rosie’s mast-cell cancer, but it did not independently create a proven cancer vaccine. University researchers and laboratories carried out the sequencing and vaccine work. Rosie’s tumours were later reported to have shrunk, but one case cannot show that the experimental treatment caused the change or establish that it works more broadly.
What happened in Rosie’s case
Conyngham, an Australian AI consultant, used ChatGPT to help plan an investigation into Rosie’s mast-cell cancer and navigate parts of the genomic-analysis process. UNSW Sydney’s Ramaciotti Centre for Genomics sequenced DNA from healthy and tumour tissue. The work generated about 320 gigabytes of data and cost about A$3,000, according to UNSW Sydney’s 2025 account.
The analysis identified Rosie’s abnormal c-KIT protein as a focus for the work. Researchers from UNSW and the University of Queensland later developed a customised mRNA vaccine. The Ramaciotti Centre reported that Rosie received her first injection in December 2025, with booster injections planned for early 2026 (UNSW Ramaciotti Centre, 2026).
What ChatGPT and AlphaFold did—and did not do
ChatGPT supported Conyngham’s planning and helped him work through genomic-analysis steps. That is different from designing, producing or administering a vaccine. The sequencing was done by a genomics centre, and university researchers developed the personalised treatment.

AlphaFold, a protein-structure prediction tool, was used to model Rosie’s c-KIT protein. UNSW cautioned that such predictions need validation; one rendering had a confidence score of 54.55. Structural biologist Dr Kate Michie warned, “I think people put a little bit too much trust in it at the moment,” and said, “We’re still working out the things that it doesn’t do” (UNSW Sydney, 2025). A model or AI-assisted analysis can help researchers investigate a biological question, but it is not itself evidence that a proposed treatment is safe or effective.
What the reported tumour shrinkage shows
A March 2026 report said Rosie’s tumours shrank by approximately 50% to 75% within weeks of the experimental treatment (The Jerusalem Post, 2026). This is a reported observation in one dog, not a result from a controlled clinical trial. Rosie received a bespoke intervention alongside other care, so the report does not establish which factor contributed to the change.

The observation does not establish that the response will last, that the vaccine alone caused it, or that another dog would respond similarly. It is not proof of a cure, a general success rate or a treatment that owners can expect to obtain.

No retail or approved product is identified in the accounts of Rosie’s case. The vaccine was made as a one-off experimental therapy tailored to her tumour; it is not an established medicine that dog owners can buy or use by following online instructions. The reported case also does not provide a validated protocol for designing or dosing a vaccine for another animal.

How Rosie’s case fits into canine cancer research
Research into cancer vaccines and other immunotherapies in dogs predates Rosie’s case, but separate studies should not be mistaken for evidence about her vaccine. A 2024 PubMed-indexed study describes the design of a randomised, placebo-controlled trial of a preventative cancer vaccine in dogs (Burton et al., 2024). The study design shows that canine vaccine research is an active area; it does not report results for Rosie’s personalised treatment.
A separate 2024 melanoma trial combined tumour-localised interleukin-2 and interleukin-12 with radiation. Among the 13 dogs that completed treatment, 10 (76.9%) had regression at the treated lesion; among 13 dogs with metastatic disease, 8 (61.5%) had partial responses across combined lesions. Median survival was 256 days (American Association for Cancer Research, 2024). Those figures concern a different treatment and tumour context, not Rosie’s mRNA vaccine; they cannot be used to estimate its effectiveness.

What dog owners should do
If your dog has cancer, speak with a licensed veterinary oncologist about the diagnosis, stage, treatment goals and evidence for the options available to your dog. If you are considering research access, ask the oncology team about legitimate clinical-trial information and whether a trial is appropriate for your pet. Do not attempt to reproduce vaccine design or dosing from internet instructions.
When weighing a treatment or research option, ask about the tumour type and stage it applies to, whether evidence comes from a single case or a controlled study, its regulatory status, the intended treatment goal, monitoring and potential side effects, cost, and access to veterinary-oncology care.
