Cell balancing helps a multi-cell battery use more of its available pack capacity by reducing differences in charge between cells. In a series-connected pack, operation is constrained by the first cell to reach its charge or discharge limit; balancing can reduce that mismatch, but it cannot restore a cell that has lost capacity.
What is cell balancing in a battery?
Cell balancing is a battery-management function that reduces differences in the charge or state of charge of cells in a multi-cell pack. Cells can start with manufacturing differences, experience unequal operating conditions, and drift apart as they age. Texas Instruments explains that a series string can be limited by its weakest cell: “A battery can only deliver a charge until its weakest cell has discharged completely, even though other cells may have plenty of charge left.” (Texas Instruments, December 2020.)
In a series string, the same current passes through each cell, but the cells may not have identical charge or capacity. If one reaches its permitted voltage boundary before the others, the battery-management system may need to stop charging or discharging to protect the pack. The remaining cells may still have usable energy, but the limiting cell constrains what the pack can safely deliver.
How does balancing increase usable battery capacity?
Balancing brings cell charge levels closer together so one cell is less likely to reach its operating boundary much earlier than the rest. That can make more of the pack’s usable energy accessible before the system reaches a cell limit. The amount depends on the particular pack and its cell condition; the cited sources do not establish a general percentage of capacity recovered through balancing.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Balancing addresses charge mismatch, not capacity fade. A cell that has aged and can store less energy does not regain its original capacity through balancing. Texas Instruments distinguishes increasing cell-capacity spread over time from differences in charge that a balancing circuit can correct (TI technical article).
Passive and active cell balancing compared
| Method | What happens to charge | Energy and design implications |
|---|---|---|
| Passive | A bypass path routes charge from selected cells through a resistor. | The bypassed energy is dissipated as heat. Designers must account for balance current, resistor heating, voltage measurement behavior, and thermal limits. |
| Active | Switching or converter circuitry transfers charge from a higher-charge cell toward another cell. | It moves charge rather than dissipating it in a bypass resistor, but adds circuitry and control complexity. The cited sources do not quantify a universal efficiency or performance advantage. |
Passive balancing is comparatively straightforward to implement with a cell monitor and bypass path. In a December 2020 explanation, TI describes it as removing charge from cells with more capacity, typically through heat dissipation, until cell charge levels are aligned (TI technical article). Active balancing requires a transfer path, such as a DC/DC converter-based circuit; its topology and transfer current must suit the pack (TI technical article).

What a balancing system needs to get right
A battery monitor or battery-management system measures cell conditions and controls when a balancing path operates. The design must fit the specific pack rather than rely on a balancing-current figure in isolation.
- Cell chemistry and series count: The monitor and balancing design must support the pack’s chemistry and number of series-connected cells.
- Measurement and protection behavior: Balancing can affect cell-voltage measurements and protection evaluation. TI’s BQ769x2 application note describes device-specific behavior, including passive balancing during charging or at rest (TI BQ769x2 application note).
- Balance current and thermal limits: A higher balance current affects how quickly charge can be bypassed or transferred, while passive circuits also generate heat. Some implementations pause balancing around voltage measurements or under thermal conditions (TI BQ769x2 application note).
- Protection and control: Balancing must operate within the monitor’s measurement, protection, and control design; behavior for one device is not automatically representative of another.
What TI reference designs show—and what they do not
TI’s examples illustrate how balancing capability depends on the intended pack. Its TIDA-00792 reference design covers 12- to 15-cell Li-ion or LiFePO4 packs. Its TIDA-010271 reference design describes passive balancing up to 100 mA for a 32-series-cell design. That 100 mA figure is a specification for this particular design, not an industry-wide standard or a promise of capacity recovery. TI states that the TIDA-010271 assembled board is for testing and validation and is not offered for sale.

These reference designs are examples, not universal recommendations for consumer packs. A suitable monitor or balancing board needs to match the battery’s chemistry, series-cell count, electrical limits, measurement and protection requirements, balance-current capability, and thermal constraints.
