Carrier phone credits usually reduce your monthly service bill over time; they do not necessarily pay off the phone’s installment agreement. If you cancel early, future credits commonly stop and some or all of the unpaid device balance may come due. The exact result depends on the carrier, promotion, and whether you cancel one line or the entire account.
What a phone credit is—and what it is not
A carrier promotion can create three separate items: the phone’s installment obligation, a recurring promotional credit, and the service plan required to qualify. A bill may show an installment charge and a separate credit, making the device’s net monthly cost lower while the promotion’s conditions are met. The credit does not, by itself, erase the installment agreement or mean the phone was free when you bought it.
Verizon and AT&T describe monthly credits tied to a device or installment term; T-Mobile describes recurring device credits. The duration and value depend on the specific offer, so there is no universal payment schedule or promotional amount. When credits appear on your bill
A credit may not appear on the first statement after enrollment. Carrier guidance says processing can take one or more bill periods:

- Verizon: Credits usually appear within one or two billing periods.
- AT&T: A credit usually appears on the next bill, but can take up to two bill periods, depending on the offer.
- T-Mobile: Some credits take up to two full bill cycles.
These are carrier timing estimates, not a guarantee for every offer. If the credit is missing, check the eligible line, promotion enrollment, and offer conditions before assuming it has been denied. Carrier explanations are available from Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile.
What can happen if you leave before the credits end
Leaving early can affect both the promotion and the device financing, but those are separate consequences. The specific offer and account terms control.

Future credits may stop
Canceling the line tied to a promotion commonly ends its remaining credits. Credits can also be affected by an early upgrade, a move to an ineligible plan, or another failure to meet the offer’s conditions. Check the rules for the exact promotion before making a change; the carriers describe different qualifying conditions in their Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile support materials.
The unpaid device balance may become due
AT&T says that canceling the line linked to an installment plan makes the remaining unpaid installment balance due immediately, typically on the final bill. Verizon says cancellation can result in the remaining device balance being charged. Do not assume that the credits you expected to receive will be subtracted from the payoff amount: confirm the current unpaid balance and final-bill treatment with your carrier. Canceling one line can differ from closing the account
T-Mobile distinguishes between canceling a line while keeping other account lines and canceling the full account. If other lines remain, device payments associated with the canceled line may continue monthly; if the entire account closes, remaining device balances become due on the final bill. Verify how your own carrier handles the line and account you intend to cancel. T-Mobile explains this in its service cancellation guidance.
A service-discount repayment may be separate
Some Verizon commitment-plan offers may require repayment of certain monthly service discounts if you leave before the stated term. Verizon’s FAQ describes a rolling maximum of six months of received discounts for the applicable terms. This is not the same as the financed-device balance and should not be treated as a charge that applies to every Verizon account. Paying off the phone early may change the credits
Paying off the device and canceling service are not always treated the same way. Carrier rules differ:

These are not interchangeable policies, and eligibility can vary by promotion. Before paying early, read the applicable offer terms and ask whether credits continue, stop, or change form. Check these details before canceling, switching, or paying early
Ask your carrier or check the account and signed agreements for each of the following:
- Current payoff: What is the unpaid installment balance today?
- Remaining credits: How much credit remains, and over how many billing periods?
- Events that end credits: Do payoff, early upgrade, plan changes, number transfer, or line cancellation affect this particular offer?
- Line versus account cancellation: If you cancel one line but keep the account open, can its device payments continue?
- Final bill and other charges: When will the remaining balance appear, and does a separate service-discount repayment apply?
- Multi-line conditions: Which lines must remain active for a multi-line or buy-one-get-one offer to stay eligible?
When comparing offers, look beyond the advertised credit. Compare total device installments, the total credits and their duration, qualifying plan and line rules, early-payoff and cancellation treatment, and any separate commitment-plan discount repayment. A promotion’s headline value alone cannot determine your own final bill; that requires your account balance and offer terms.
