A suspended carbon nanotube can act as an extremely small mass sensor: when an atom or molecule lands on it, the nanotube’s resonance frequency shifts. Measuring that shift lets researchers estimate the added inertial mass. Experiments have demonstrated this approach in specialized laboratory devices, but the reported sensitivities are tied to particular setups—not specifications for a general-purpose or consumer instrument.
How a nanotube weighs an atom or molecule
A carbon nanotube is suspended so it can vibrate, then driven or monitored as a mechanical resonator. Like other resonators, it has a characteristic resonance frequency. When material adsorbs onto the nanotube, the added mass changes that frequency. Researchers measure the shift and use it to estimate the mass.
The sensor does not put a molecule on a conventional scale. It infers added inertial mass from a change in vibration. Its ability to detect a small mass therefore depends on how clearly the measurement can resolve the frequency shift, as well as the device and measurement conditions.

What experiments have demonstrated
Yoctogram-scale resolution in a 2012 experiment
Chaste and colleagues reported a mass-sensing resolution of 1.7 yoctograms (yg; 1 yg = 10−24 g) with a carbon nanotube about 150 nanometres long, vibrating near 2 GHz. The authors described the figure as equivalent to a proton’s mass. In that specific setup, they detected naphthalene adsorption events and measured xenon binding energy. These are experimental results for that device, not a general performance guarantee. Nature Nanotechnology (2012)

Room-temperature atomic mass sensitivity
A 2008 study reported a room-temperature nanotube nanomechanical resonator with atomic mass resolution. Its reported mass sensitivity was 1.3 × 10−25 kg Hz−1/2, also expressed as 0.40 gold atoms Hz−1/2. The bandwidth term is part of the units: this sensitivity should not be treated as a universal mass resolution or directly compared with a resolution value without the measurement context. The studies are not head-to-head tests. Their figures describe different devices and measurement contexts, and mass sensitivity, mass resolution, and a product’s detection limit are related but distinct quantities.

Different nanotube sensing approaches
Suspended resonator with electrical or electromechanical readout
Experimental work has used suspended nanotube resonators and detected changes in resonance frequency to infer added inertial mass. The 2008 and 2012 reports provide examples of this experimental approach. Nano Letters (2008)

A separate 2012 paper proposed weighing an atom with a coupled plasmon–carbon nanotube system, using optical probing involving a surface plasmon. Its performance calculation neglected thermomechanical and adsorption–desorption noise—processes that would limit performance. The proposal is therefore not evidence of an experimentally validated commercial instrument. Science and Technology of Advanced Materials (2012)

A similarly named conference abstract describes another arrangement
The 2006 American Physical Society March Meeting abstract “Weighing Molecules with Carbon Nanotubes” describes a quartz shear-mode transducer coated with debundled nanotubes and exposed to gases, with adsorption and desorption observed. That arrangement is not the same as a single suspended nanotube resonator. APS March Meeting (2006)
What the measurement can—and cannot—tell you
A frequency shift can provide evidence that mass has been added and support an estimate of that mass. It does not, by itself, identify an unknown compound: mass sensing is not the same as a complete chemical-identification workflow. The 2012 experiment documented particular naphthalene adsorption events and xenon measurements; those results do not establish universal single-molecule detection for every substance or environment.

Performance depends on the resonator and its measurement conditions. In particular, a very small reported resolution should not be read as proof that the same mass can routinely be measured in any environment. The optical proposal’s omitted noise sources illustrate why modeled sensitivity and practical performance are not interchangeable.
Is a nanotube molecule-weighing device available to buy?
The cited papers establish research methods and laboratory results, not a consumer-ready molecule-weighing device or a complete kit. They do not establish a vendor, stock status, or a broadly available product. Nanotube materials and nanomechanical instrumentation may be used in specialist research, but the reported experiments are not a basis for treating generic nanotube material or laboratory components as a ready-made sensor.
