The simplest way to get Ethernet in a distant room is to run a cable from a LAN port on your router to the device. If a cable route is impractical, existing coax may support a MoCA adapter pair; powerline adapters are another option, but results depend on your home’s electrical wiring. If you need stronger Wi-Fi throughout the room rather than a wired port for one device, consider an access point or mesh system instead.

Choose the right option for your room

Start by deciding whether you need an Ethernet connection for a single device or better Wi-Fi coverage across the room. Then check what wiring is available and whether you can route a cable acceptably.

Option Best fit What to check
Direct Ethernet cable A wired connection when you can route a cable from the router to the device. Whether a visible or concealed cable route is practical.
MoCA adapters A wired connection using existing coax outlets. The outlets must connect through a suitable coax network, and adapters must be compatible with the setup.
Powerline adapters A possible wired connection when Ethernet and usable coax are unavailable. Performance depends on the home’s electrical wiring.
Access point or mesh system Wi-Fi coverage across the far room rather than a single wired endpoint. Mesh units may use a wireless link or, if compatible and cabled, Ethernet backhaul.

There is no apples-to-apples independent speed test in the cited guidance that establishes which method will be fastest in your home. Avoid treating an adapter’s advertised link rate as a guaranteed real-world speed.

Run Ethernet directly when the route works

Connect one end of an Ethernet cable to a LAN port on the router and the other to the device. Microsoft’s Windows guidance describes this basic router-to-PC connection. A direct cable avoids depending on Wi-Fi coverage, though the route may be visible or require installation work if you want it concealed.

  • 𝐀𝐕𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐬 𝐔𝐩 𝐭𝐨 𝟕𝟓𝟎 𝐅𝐞𝐞𝐭 - Powered by HomePlug AV2, delivers AV1000 powerline speeds through existing electrical wiring. Speeds cannot exceed your internet plan's limit and may be lower due to wiring quality, distance, and interference.
  • Ideal for multi-story homes, basements, attics, and garages.
  • 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐛𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐛𝐮𝐲 - Adapters must be plugged directly into wall outlets on the same electrical circuit. Does not work with power strips, surge protectors, or extension cords. Place away from large appliances, such as washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.
  • 𝐀𝐝𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐲 - Performance may be limited or blocked in homes with AFCI breakers, which are standard in many homes built after 2000. Powerline may also not work with routers or gateways using modified, open-source (e.g., DD-WRT), or non-standard firmware.

If your computer has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide one; check that the adapter works with your computer before buying. If you want a permanent concealed run but cannot install it yourself, professional cable installation is another possibility.

Use coax with MoCA adapters

MoCA adapters carry a network connection over coax. They can provide Ethernet in a far room if the coax outlets at both ends are connected to the same suitable coax network. They do not replace the router: one adapter connects to the router’s LAN and coax network, while a second adapter at the far outlet provides an Ethernet port for a device.

  • 2 GIGABIT PORTS - Provides a secure wired network for connected devices, such as desktops, smart TVs, game consoles, and more. Ethernet cables are included. Tip: Expand connections with an Ethernet switch (sold separately).
  1. At the router, connect an Ethernet cable from a LAN port to the first MoCA adapter’s Ethernet or LAN port.
  2. Connect that adapter to the coax network using the adapter’s coax connection.
  3. At the far room, connect a second compatible adapter to the coax outlet.
  4. Connect the far adapter’s Ethernet port to a computer, console, or other wired device. The exact ports and steps vary by adapter model, so follow its manual.

Before choosing MoCA, confirm that the two outlets are connected through suitable coax and check for conflicts with other services on that wiring. Motorola cautions against using coax associated with satellite TV in the arrangement described in its MoCA with a Wi-Fi router guidance. Verizon’s MoCA Ethernet adapter information and adapter user guide describe adapter connections and endpoint use.

Try powerline if you lack a usable cable or coax path

A powerline kit uses electrical wiring to carry network data between adapters, with Ethernet ports at the endpoints. Connect one adapter near the router and the other near the device, following the kit’s instructions. This can be an alternative when you cannot route Ethernet and do not have a suitable coax path, but the result depends on your home’s electrical wiring. Ofcom’s Wi-Fi guidance notes that powerline performance depends on the wiring; TP-Link also discusses powerline as one of several Wi-Fi options in its range extender, powerline, and mesh guidance.

Choose mesh or an access point for room-wide Wi-Fi

If the real problem is weak Wi-Fi across the far room, a single Ethernet port may not solve it. An access point or mesh system is intended to extend Wi-Fi coverage. Compatible mesh units can also be linked by Ethernet backhaul when you can run a cable between them; TP-Link explains this approach in its Deco Ethernet backhaul guide. Mesh without a cable relies on a wireless link, so the result depends on that link and placement.

If the connection does not work

  • Direct cable: Check that both ends are fully connected to the router’s LAN port and the device’s Ethernet port. If the computer lacks a port, use a compatible USB-to-Ethernet adapter.
  • MoCA: Verify that both adapters are connected to the intended coax path, powered, and connected to the router and endpoint with Ethernet. Check the model’s instructions and whether the coax arrangement is suitable.
  • Powerline: Confirm that both adapters are connected as directed and that the endpoint has an Ethernet connection. If performance is poor, the electrical wiring may be limiting the link.
  • Mesh or access point: Confirm that the equipment is compatible and configured as directed. For Ethernet backhaul, verify the cable path between the mesh units and their connection ports.
