Students can build leadership experience through the National Space Society (NSS) by taking on project roles, joining competitions, contributing to a local chapter, practicing outreach, and exploring education and internship opportunities. These are separate routes students can combine—not a single formal NSS leadership curriculum—and participation does not guarantee a job or a particular career outcome.
What leadership opportunities does the NSS offer students?
NSS education and student resources span K–12 through university and post-doctoral study. They include lessons, projects, contests, debates, outreach, chapter service, and career resources. Which options fit depends on a student’s age, interests, location, and what is currently available.
The most practical way to choose is to match an activity to the responsibility a student wants to practice: coordinating teammates, presenting ideas, researching a question, serving a community, or learning from people in the field.

Which student projects and competitions build leadership skills?
Space Settlement Contest
The NSS Space Settlement Contest is open to students worldwide in grades 7–12 who are 18 or younger, according to the NSS education page. Students develop a project related to space settlement. NSS says the work can develop teamwork, communication, innovation, and academic and emotional growth. The organization reports that tens of thousands of students have taken part since the contest began in 1994; that is an NSS-reported cumulative figure, not an independently audited count.

For leadership practice, a student can look for opportunities within the project to organize research, coordinate contributions, or explain the team’s decisions. These are practical ways to apply the skills NSS associates with the contest, not guaranteed roles or outcomes.
International Space Settlement Design Competition
The International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISDC) is described by NSS as an annual event for high school students. Participants take simulated aerospace-industry engineering roles and design a space city for more than 10,000 people. That population is part of the design scenario, not a real settlement statistic. NSS identifies creativity, technical competence, management, environmental knowledge, teamwork, and presentation among the skills demonstrated.

Global Space Debates
NSS describes Global Space Debates for middle- and high-school students, college and university students, and professionals at International Space Development Conferences. Topics include space policy, representation, military aspects, and how space development may affect governance on Earth. Researching a position, making an argument, and speaking to an audience make debate a useful way to practice communication and public reasoning; that is an inference from the activity, not a measured leadership result.

How does SpacEdge support student learning and collaboration?
SpacEdge Academy is an NSS online STEAM learning program. Its public catalog includes projects, activities, courses, and lessons, with categories such as microgravity experiment design, educator development, Space Ambassadors, and grade-level materials. The site also describes project and experiment creation, curriculum sharing, and contests. Because offerings may change, use the live catalog to see what is available now.
NSS also describes SpacEdge Centers for Educational Excellence as connecting university and post-graduate students with space-industry and university leaders in particular STEAM areas. The described activities include mentoring, networking, Q&A, collaboration, research resources, and possible annual competitions. NSS has listed focus areas such as aerospace additive manufacturing, orbital debris mitigation and remediation, space policy and good governance, and space solar power. A listed area does not establish that a center or competition is active today; check the current NSS education information before planning around one.

How can a student join or lead an NSS chapter?
NSS chapters are volunteer communities that may focus on education, outreach, advocacy, camaraderie, or interests chosen by members. Chapter activities are shaped locally, so a student’s responsibilities and opportunities will depend on the chapter.
- Find a nearby or relevant group. Use the NSS chapters directory to look for U.S., international, or special-interest chapters.
- Ask what the chapter is doing now. Contact its listed representative to ask about meetings, projects, volunteering, and how students can contribute.
- Take responsibility through service. Depending on the chapter’s needs, a student might help with education, public outreach, advocacy, or community activities. Specific roles vary by group.
- Explore formal membership and officer eligibility. The NSS student/teacher membership listing says eligible members may join a chapter, vote, volunteer, be elected chapter officers, and seek NSS leadership roles. Confirm current eligibility and rules with NSS and the chapter.
If there is no suitable chapter nearby, NSS materials also describe the possibility of organizing a new local or topical chapter with other members. Before acting, consult the current NSS community chapters information and confirm the applicable requirements directly; chapter procedures can change.

Are there NSS space internships for college students?
NSS documented specific SpacEdge internship examples in a November 16, 2025 article, but those examples do not establish a standing internship open to every student or confirm that openings are available now. The article describes remote work in lesson creation and historical lunar mapping, including locating archival material, documenting sources, organizing findings, and proposing follow-up lessons.
In the lunar-mapping example, NSS reported that four University of Chicago students researched lunar-atlas history in summer 2025 and identified more than 500 associated documents. The article described a collaboration with a University of Chicago Metcalf Sprint Grant. It reported student awards of $2,000–$5,000 per season, depending on the internship program, and more than $135,000 in value to SpacEdge from University of Chicago opportunities over four years. Those figures apply to the particular university collaboration described by NSS, not to NSS internships generally. The article also says some student work continued voluntarily after a funded period; that does not establish a paid or ongoing role.

The NSS Teachers and Students portal points students to the NSS Career Center, ISDC, Ad Astra, virtual space forums, contests, and Space Ambassadors. NSS describes Space Ambassadors as an educational outreach opportunity in which participants share their interest in space exploration with the public through presentations. These resources can help students explore careers, meet people, practice communication, or participate in public engagement; they should not be treated as a direct route to employment.
How should students choose a starting point?
- For a first team project: Check the Space Settlement Contest or the current SpacEdge Academy catalog for age-appropriate options.
- For simulated engineering and team management: Review ISDC eligibility and current participation details.
- For public speaking and policy discussion: Look for Global Space Debates or Space Ambassadors opportunities.
- For ongoing service and a formal student role: Contact a chapter and confirm membership and officer rules.
- For research or lesson-development experience: Treat the 2025 internship story as an example, then verify whether any current opening exists.
Membership terms, event schedules, chapter activity, and internship openings can change. Confirm them with NSS or the relevant program before making plans.
