Hybrid cloud storage can support scalable web hosting when each part of the application is placed where it best meets a defined need—such as local-system latency, data residency, gradual migration, disaster recovery or peak capacity. It is not a storage product or a scaling switch: the design must account for how the application reads and writes data, how environments stay connected, and what happens when either side is unavailable.

What hybrid cloud storage means for a website

A hybrid design combines public-cloud services with private-cloud, on-premises or edge infrastructure. A website may use cloud-hosted front-end services while retaining a database or file system locally, or it may keep its main deployment on premises and use cloud resources for recovery or traffic peaks. Storage can be part of that design, but compute, networking, routing and data consistency matter too.

Start with the application’s access pattern rather than choosing a storage service first. Static files, database transactions, shared files and VM volumes have different interfaces and performance requirements. Google Cloud’s hosting guidance, for example, maps static sites to Cloud Storage and lists Cloud SQL, Firestore, Bigtable, persistent disks and external providers among options for VM-hosted workloads. Those are examples within Google Cloud’s architecture, not a universal prescription.

Workload or goal Typical placement pattern Design detail to verify
Static site and assets Object storage with a content delivery network (CDN) Custom-domain HTTPS and how content is cached and updated
VM-hosted application Autoscaling VM group with suitable database, object storage or persistent disk Whether instances can be replaced without losing required data
Containerized application Autoscaled cluster with a persistent volume or external data service Container-local files are ephemeral; persistent data needs an appropriate storage abstraction
Backend must remain in a controlled local environment Cloud front end routes requests to an on-premises backend Network reliability, request latency and the backend’s ability to handle routed traffic
Existing local file share Local clients access cloud-backed files through a gateway and cache SMB or NFS compatibility, cache behavior and connectivity during an outage
Recovery or peak capacity Cloud replica for recovery, or cloud resources for overflow traffic Data freshness, activation, routing and recovery targets

When a hybrid design is worth considering

Hybrid placement is most defensible when keeping some components outside the public cloud solves a concrete problem. AWS identifies local latency, local data processing, avoiding high transfer costs and regulatory compliance as reasons an application may remain on premises. A gradual migration can also be a practical reason to connect existing systems to cloud-hosted services. Some applications need re-architecture before migration, so a hybrid period may be a transition rather than a permanent target.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Compare those benefits with the extra effort of operating two environments. Google Cloud says a hybrid topology needs a reliable, secure network connection and more setup and operating effort than a cloud-only architecture. Duplicate data and resources that sit idle can also increase cost. Hybrid is not automatically more resilient or cheaper simply because workloads are split across locations.

Match storage to the site’s data access pattern

Static sites and asset delivery

For a static site, object storage plus a CDN can separate content delivery from application servers. Google Cloud’s hosting overview describes a pattern using Cloud Storage and Firebase Hosting, and also describes Cloud CDN with HTTP(S) load balancing to serve content from Compute Engine, Cloud Storage or both through one IP address. These are provider-specific examples; confirm current product behavior before implementation.

There is an important HTTPS detail in Google’s guidance: Cloud Storage can serve HTTPS, but does not itself provide end-to-end HTTPS for custom domains. The guidance points to Firebase Hosting or an HTTPS load balancer for that requirement. A design should verify the complete browser-to-origin path, not assume that enabling HTTPS for a storage endpoint resolves custom-domain TLS needs.

VMs and containers

VM-based hosting can use a managed instance group for autoscaling, as in Google Cloud’s example. A VM workload may use relational or NoSQL databases, object storage, persistent disks or external storage depending on what the application expects. For Kubernetes on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), the cluster autoscaler can scale nodes, but storage behavior differs from a VM’s local disk. Files inside a container are ephemeral; data that must survive replacement or rescheduling belongs on a persistent volume or in an external managed service.

Stateless application components are generally easier to scale across instances because they avoid significant local dependencies and can use shared storage or cached services. Google’s Well-Architected guidance says a stateless architecture can increase reliability and scalability. That does not eliminate the need to design stateful databases, sessions and files deliberately.

Files and block volumes for local systems

File storage is appropriate when local clients or applications require shared SMB or NFS access; block storage is suited to workloads expecting volumes presented to servers. A gateway can bridge a cloud storage service to a local interface, but it does not remove the need to plan caching, synchronization, access control and failure behavior.

In AWS’s documented network-file-share example, DataSync copies data from on-premises NAS or file servers to Amazon S3. File Gateway then presents an S3 bucket or prefix to local clients as an SMB or NFS share, using a local cache for frequently accessed data. AWS describes DataSync as supporting NFS, SMB and S3 sources and destinations in this context, with transfer over the internet or Direct Connect; the article reports a rate of up to 10 Gbps. That is a vendor-published capability, not a promised rate for a particular migration. AWS also says the transfer uses TLS in transit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For block storage, AWS describes Volume Gateway as exposing on-premises iSCSI volumes. In cached mode, primary data is kept in S3 while frequently accessed data is stored locally. In stored mode, the primary dataset remains local and is backed up asynchronously to S3. AWS lists snapshots, volume clones and AWS Backup as recovery options. These modes suit different data-placement needs; neither removes the need to test recovery and application behavior.

Design the hybrid connection and placement

Keep a front end in the cloud while the backend stays local

A tiered design can place load balancing, CDN delivery, DDoS protection and access policies in the cloud while requests go to an on-premises backend. Google documents this pattern for applications whose backend must remain in a controlled environment, including globally used applications. Its usefulness depends on the backend being reachable and responsive enough for the front end’s users.

Choose routing around failure and consistency

AWS hybrid guidance describes front ends running on premises, in AWS Regions or split across both, with public DNS routing patterns that include active-backup and active-active. Active-backup keeps a standby path for failover; active-active sends traffic to both environments. The appropriate choice depends on how requests are routed, what failure should trigger a switch, and whether the data can remain consistent across active locations. DNS routing alone does not make application state consistent.

Plan recovery and peak traffic as separate use cases

Disaster recovery

A cloud replica can support recovery of an on-premises application, but its usefulness depends on the recovery time objective (RTO) and recovery point objective (RPO). RTO is the acceptable time to restore service; RPO is the acceptable amount of data loss measured as a time interval. Google’s hybrid guidance describes backing up local application data to Google Cloud and maintaining a cloud replica. Backup frequency and whether the replica is active or passive depend on the required RTO and RPO; activation can follow a planned or unplanned outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Specify which components fail over, how the replica is activated, and how traffic is redirected. A copy of the data alone is not a complete recovery plan if the application, network route or dependencies cannot also be brought online in time.

Cloud bursting

Cloud bursting uses cloud capacity to handle overflow when an on-premises application reaches peak demand. It requires more than spare compute: verify the application can run in both locations, sufficiently current data is available, traffic can be routed, licensing permits the arrangement and resources can be provisioned quickly enough. If these conditions have not been tested, bursting may not relieve a real peak.

Evaluate a design before committing

Compare complete architectures against the same workload and failure scenarios. Include both the normal path and degraded-connectivity behavior; a strong local performance result does not establish that cloud access will remain usable during a network interruption.

  • Access pattern: Identify whether the application needs object APIs, SMB or NFS file protocols, iSCSI block volumes, or database transactions.
  • Latency and throughput: Measure the local and cloud paths under realistic reads, writes and peak demand. Include behavior when the connection is impaired.
  • Availability and recovery: Define replication, backups, RTO and RPO. Identify which services fail over and how failover is triggered and reversed.
  • Security and compliance: Review identity and access controls, encryption, data residency and regulatory requirements across every environment and transfer path.
  • Operations: Account for monitoring, patching, synchronization, capacity management and consistent administration across locations.
  • Total cost: Include local hardware and support, cloud storage and requests, data transfer, network connectivity, gateway and cache capacity, redundant copies, and idle recovery or peak resources.

A practical selection sequence

  1. Map the application. List its front end, compute, database, files, sessions and external dependencies; note which components must stay local and why.
  2. Assign each data type an interface and owner. Decide which system is authoritative for each dataset and how local and cloud components read, write and synchronize it.
  3. Draw normal and failure paths. Show request routing, data flow, cache behavior, connectivity loss, recovery activation and return to normal operation.
  4. Set measurable service targets. Define latency, availability, RTO, RPO, peak load and security or residency constraints before sizing storage or network capacity.
  5. Price the whole topology. Count recurring cloud charges and network transfers alongside local support, gateway capacity, duplicated storage and unused standby capacity.
  6. Test the workloads that can fail. Exercise recovery, reconnection, stale-cache handling, data synchronization and peak routing before treating the architecture as production-ready.

What can be concluded without a workload profile

No single provider, storage class, capacity, network service or gateway can be selected responsibly without the site’s traffic profile, geography, workload, budget, retention rules and recovery targets. Cloud service names, features, limits, availability and pricing can change, so verify current provider documentation during implementation. The sound default is to keep a component hybrid only when a specific requirement justifies the connectivity, synchronization and operating burden.
