Camera-based headsets and Lighthouse trackers can share a VR playspace only after their tracking coordinate systems are aligned. Calibration software uses observations of a device visible to both systems to estimate the rotation and position offset between them, then maps tracked-device poses into a common space. This is different from calibrating the physical sensor layout inside a Lighthouse-tracked device.
Why two tracking systems need alignment
A headset’s onboard cameras estimate its position and orientation in the headset’s own reference frame. Lighthouse devices, such as compatible Vive Trackers or controllers, report poses in the Lighthouse/SteamVR frame. A position from one frame cannot be treated as though it were already in the other: the origins and orientations may differ.
Mixed-tracking calibration estimates the relationship between those frames. Once software has that relationship, it can translate and rotate Lighthouse poses so they line up with the camera-tracked headset’s playspace.
How the calibration creates a shared playspace
1. Select devices from both tracking systems
Space Calibrator is documented as a tool for aligning multiple tracking systems. Its workflow uses a reference device from one tracking space and a target device from the other; the precise labels and selections depend on the software version or fork. Consult the instructions for the build you have installed: Space Calibrator project and maintained fork documentation.

A compatible Lighthouse-tracked device can serve as the shared reference or target, depending on the workflow. The important point is that the selected devices must correspond to the two systems being aligned.
2. Gather paired observations
With both systems tracking, hold the corresponding devices together as the software instructs and move them to collect observations. The software compares what each system reports for the physically related devices. Moving through varied positions and orientations gives the solver information about the relationship between the coordinate frames; simply leaving the devices still provides less information about that relationship.

Follow the motion and collection instructions for your particular release. The available documentation does not establish a universal sample count, calibration time, or movement pattern.
3. Estimate and apply a transform
The solver estimates a rigid transform: a rotation and translation that map observations from one coordinate frame to the other. It then applies that mapping to tracked poses so the headset and Lighthouse devices appear in the same usable playspace.

The headset cameras and Lighthouse base stations are not directly calibrating each other. The paired tracked device observations provide the bridge between their independently reported spaces.
Mixed-space alignment is not Lighthouse device calibration
These terms describe different jobs. Mixed-space alignment relates the headset’s tracking frame to the Lighthouse frame. Device optical calibration describes the physical positions, surface normals, and channel mapping of Lighthouse sensors on a tracked object. SteamVR uses that sensor geometry to resolve the object’s pose from tracking data, as Valve explains in its Lighthouse device configuration documentation.

One-time and continuous calibration

Continuous calibration is a capability of particular software forks, not a general SteamVR feature. Check the documentation for your exact headset, fork, and device combination before relying on it.

- Confirm that the intended reference and target devices were selected and identified correctly.
- Make sure both tracking systems are producing valid poses while observations are collected.
- If continuous calibration is enabled, verify that the headset-mounted tracker is firmly attached and has not moved.
- Consider whether either tracking space was moved or reset since alignment; such a change can make the previous transform unsuitable.
- Check that the Lighthouse base stations are functioning. Valve’s general SteamVR troubleshooting guidance includes checking station firmware and testing a station in A mode: SteamVR base-station troubleshooting.
These checks address common causes but are not a complete diagnosis for every headset, base station, or software fork. Compatibility and setup details differ, so use the current instructions for the exact combination in your playspace.
