Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) direction finding adds an angle measurement to indoor positioning: a system can estimate the direction a radio signal travels, then combine observations to estimate where a device is. The two standardized methods put a multi-antenna array on opposite ends of the radio link. Neither guarantees a particular accuracy in every building; results depend on compatible hardware, system design, and the radio environment.

How Bluetooth indoor positioning works

A positioning system needs measurements that relate a device to known locations. Traditional Bluetooth LE approaches often use received signal strength indicator (RSSI) to estimate distance from fixed receivers. With enough distance estimates, a system can infer a position through trilateration. RSSI is an indirect distance clue, not a direction measurement.

Bluetooth direction finding adds information about the signal’s angle. Multiple directional observations from known points can help a system estimate a device’s position through triangulation. Direction and distance answer different questions: an angle indicates which way a signal is coming from or going, while a range estimate indicates how far apart devices are. A design may rely on one type of measurement or combine them.

What is Bluetooth AoA?

Angle of Arrival puts the array at the receiver

In Angle of Arrival (AoA), the transmitting tag or device sends a direction-finding signal. A fixed locator with a multi-antenna array receives it and estimates the signal’s incoming angle. The infrastructure—the receiving locator—is therefore the side that needs the antenna array. Bluetooth SIG describes this receiver-side arrangement in its Direction Finding overview and feature overview.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

This layout can suit systems that track many tags or devices using instrumented fixed locators, though actual suitability depends on the target devices and deployment design. AoA does not eliminate the need to plan, install, and evaluate the receiving infrastructure.

What is Bluetooth AoD?

Angle of Departure puts the array at the transmitter

In Angle of Departure (AoD), a fixed locator with a multi-antenna array transmits the direction-finding signal. A receiving device estimates the signal’s outgoing angle. The array is thus on the transmitting side rather than the receiver; a receiving device may be a smartphone, provided its Bluetooth hardware and software support the required capability.

AoD and AoA are different system architectures, not interchangeable labels for the same arrangement. AoD shifts the specialized array to fixed transmitters and asks receiving devices to do the angle-estimation work. Whether that is practical depends on the devices that must participate and their confirmed Bluetooth LE support.

AoA and AoD compared

Approach Where the antenna array sits Who estimates the angle What to evaluate
AoA At the receiver, typically a fixed locator The receiving locator estimates the incoming angle Locator coverage, array hardware, and support in the transmitting tags or devices
AoD At the transmitter, typically a fixed locator The receiving device estimates the outgoing angle Array-equipped transmitters and support in the receiving-device population

These layouts identify where the specialized antenna array belongs; they do not establish a universal locator count, placement pattern, calibration procedure, or bill of materials. Those choices must be worked out for the specific system and space.

Can Bluetooth track assets indoors?

Yes. Bluetooth direction finding is intended to support location applications such as asset tracking, indoor navigation, worker safety, and autonomous guided vehicles, according to the Bluetooth SIG. These are potential applications, not evidence that every implementation will meet a particular coverage or accuracy requirement.

Direction finding is useful when knowing which direction a signal comes from or goes matters to the position estimate. If the need is only a rough proximity or distance estimate, RSSI-based methods may be sufficient. If distance is the central requirement, Bluetooth Channel Sounding is a separate ranging capability; the Bluetooth SIG explains the distinction in its Channel Sounding overview. A combined design may be appropriate when a use case needs both angle and range information, but that choice should follow measured requirements rather than a general claim that one technology is best.

How accurate is Bluetooth direction finding?

The Bluetooth SIG says direction finding can enable positioning systems that “can achieve centimeter-level location accuracy.” That is a capability statement, not a guaranteed result for a particular building, product, or installation. A 2024 survey in Computers & Electrical Engineering concluded that sub-meter accuracy is achievable across the BLE localization techniques it reviewed, while sub-decimeter accuracy remained an open research area. The survey’s finding covers BLE localization broadly; it is not a benchmark for every standardized AoA or AoD system. See the survey abstract.

Indoor radio conditions can change the outcome. Reflections from walls, equipment, and other surfaces create multipath, which can complicate angle estimates. A 2024 implementation study discusses optimization and multipath mitigation, illustrating that these are practical engineering concerns rather than details solved by the feature name alone; see the study. Measure performance in the intended building, with the intended devices and use case, before treating an accuracy figure as a requirement the system has met.

What hardware and support does a prototype need?

A prototype needs Bluetooth LE direction-finding-capable hardware and an antenna arrangement appropriate to its chosen method: an array on the receiving side for AoA or on the transmitting side for AoD. Bluetooth SIG introduced direction finding as an optional capability in Bluetooth Core 5.1. The version alone does not confirm that a particular controller, stack, device, profile, or retail product supports the complete system you plan to build.

Before procurement, confirm support with the relevant hardware and software vendors, including firmware and antenna configuration. A Bluetooth LE direction-finding development kit may be a sensible category for prototyping, but compatibility and AoA/AoD suitability must be verified for the specific kit. No universal anchor count, placement plan, calibration method, or parts list applies to every installation.

Questions to settle before choosing a system

  • What measurement does the application need? Decide whether it needs an angle, a distance estimate, or both.
  • Which devices can carry the array? Choose between receiver-side arrays for AoA and transmitter-side arrays for AoD based on the infrastructure and device population.
  • Is support confirmed end to end? Verify the controller, stack, firmware, device, and product support rather than relying on a Bluetooth version number alone.
  • Will the design work in the actual space? Evaluate coverage and positioning performance in the building, where multipath and physical layout affect radio behavior.
  • Does measured performance meet the use case? Set acceptance criteria for the application and test against them; a published capability is not a deployment result.
