Basecamp began as an in-house tool, not as a plan to launch a software company. In the founders’ account, web-design firm 37signals built it to coordinate a growing load of client projects, then offered the tool to other businesses. As the software took on a larger role, the business moved from client design work to software—and its company name changed along with its focus.

Why 37signals built Basecamp

37signals began in 1999 as a web-design firm, according to co-founder Jason Fried’s account in the company’s REWORK episode about the company name. As the firm took on more client projects, it found that its existing ways of coordinating work were not enough to maintain the level of service it wanted. Fried later summed up the motivation on Basecamp’s official origin page: “Truth is, we built Basecamp out of desperate necessity.”

The immediate problem was practical: a growing team needed a clearer way to keep client work organized. Fried describes the project as a response to the firm’s own workload, rather than a product concept developed first for an outside market.

From an internal tool to a product

Fried’s account in the official REWORK episode “Sell Your By-products (Season 2)” traces the tool’s early form to a manually updated blog. The team later automated it and made the resulting product available to other businesses. As Fried put it, “We built it for ourselves, initially.”

This sequence explains the founders’ by-product framing: software created to improve the agency’s own work became something other organizations could use. It does not establish that Basecamp was the first project-management product or that 37signals invented software as a service.

When software became the main business

Fried recalls that about a year and a half after Basecamp launched, the software was doing more business for the firm than web design. The company then stopped doing design work and focused on software. This is a founder’s retrospective account; it does not supply a precise transition date or revenue figures.

The change was therefore not simply a new product line. It shifted what the company sold—from client web-design services to software—and who it served, from its own agency team to outside customers.

Basecamp’s product milestones

In its product-history account, 37signals dates the product milestones as follows:

Product Company-stated year
Basecamp Classic 2004
Basecamp 2 2012
Basecamp 3 2015

These dates come from the company’s product history. They mark versions in the company’s own chronology, not independently established industry milestones. The history page also includes roadmap language about a later transition; that forecast should not be treated as confirmation of current product availability or release status.

Why 37signals became Basecamp—and changed back

As Basecamp became the company’s best-known product, the founders changed the company name from 37signals to Basecamp in 2014. In 2022, they returned to the 37signals name as the company again had more than one product under its umbrella, according to the same REWORK episode.

The names reflect different scopes. “Basecamp” identified both the flagship product and, for a period, the company. “37signals” once again served as the broader company identity, with Basecamp remaining a product. This history is based mainly on the founders’ and company’s retrospective accounts, rather than a full independent corporate history.
