Apple Watch blood oxygen readings are wellness estimates, not medical tests, and the feature is not available on every watch or in every region. A reading can also fail under ordinary conditions such as movement, cold skin, or a loose fit. When available, the percentage estimates how much oxygen red blood cells carry; it does not diagnose a health problem.
What an Apple Watch blood oxygen reading means
Blood oxygen level is the percentage of oxygen red blood cells carry from the lungs to the rest of the body. Apple says levels are 95–100% for most people, while some people normally live below 95%; slightly lower readings are also expected during sleep. These are general context figures, not a universal clinical threshold.
Apple describes the feature as intended for general fitness and wellness, not medical use, self-diagnosis, or consultation with a doctor. A single percentage should not be treated as a diagnosis or as a substitute for medical advice.
How Apple Watch collects a reading
On-demand measurement
Open the Blood Oxygen app on a supported watch and start a measurement. The watch uses bright red light against the wrist. Apple’s user-facing documentation does not specify the complete optical sensor arrangement, wavelengths, calibration, or algorithm, so the percentage should be understood as the watch’s estimate rather than a directly observed laboratory result.

Rest your arm on a table or your lap, keep your wrist flat with the watch facing up, and stay still until the countdown finishes. See Apple’s Blood Oxygen app instructions and Apple Watch User Guide.
Background measurements
If background measurements are enabled, the watch takes them occasionally, usually when you are not moving. Their frequency varies with activity; they are not continuous measurements. During sleep, they occur only if Track Sleep with Apple Watch is enabled. The red light may be visible in a dark room. Apple says background measurements can be turned off for Sleep Focus or Theater Mode in the Blood Oxygen settings.

Where to find readings
On-demand and background measurements are saved in the Health app on iPhone. Open Health > Browse > Respiratory > Blood Oxygen. The chart can show day, week, month, or six-month views, with filters for sleep or high elevation.
Whether results also appear on the watch depends on the watch and purchase circumstances. For specified Apple Watch models purchased in the United States on or after January 18, 2024, analysis is performed on the iPhone and results appear in Health; the current guide says those results cannot be viewed on the watch itself. Apple’s support article and guide describe the affected part-number suffixes with slightly different details. Check your exact model with Apple rather than relying on a suffix rule alone. Apple’s Vitals guide also says blood oxygen may appear among overnight metrics, with an exception for certain US-purchased watches ending in LW/A.

Which Apple Watch models support Blood Oxygen
Apple lists Apple Watch Series 6 or later and all Apple Watch Ultra models as supported, subject to availability in the wearer’s country or region. Apple Watch SE and Apple Watch For Your Kids do not support the feature. US purchase date and exact part number can affect where results are analyzed and displayed, so a model name alone may not establish eligibility. Verify the exact watch and region in Apple’s availability and model guidance before relying on the feature.

- Cold conditions or low skin perfusion.
- Some tattoos that block the sensor’s light.
- Movement, or certain arm and hand positions.
- A resting heart rate above 150 beats per minute.
- A loose fit or poor contact between the watch and skin.
For a better chance of success, wear the watch flush against the top of the wrist, maintain comfortable skin contact, support a flat arm, and remain still for the full measurement. If a reading still does not complete, try again when you are warm and settled. A failed measurement does not by itself indicate a health problem.
