It uses Chromium components, but it is not the Chrome app: the host app provides the surrounding experience, controls navigation and settings, and can connect page scripts to native code. That integration is useful, but it also means developers must handle security boundaries, activity recreation and renderer crashes.
What Android WebView is—and how it differs from Chrome
WebView is an embeddable web-content surface, not a complete standalone browser. Android exposes it through framework and AndroidX APIs; glue code connects those APIs through JNI to Chromium browser and renderer components. Chromium’s architecture documentation describes WebView as following Chrome’s architecture by separating browser and renderer code.
That shared Chromium foundation does not make WebView and Chrome interchangeable. In a WebView, the app supplies the screen around the page and decides how the user moves through content. A standard browser is generally the better choice for arbitrary destinations, browser-managed identity and permissions, an address bar, and browser security signals. Android’s API reference recommends using a standard browser in most cases.
| Aspect | Android WebView | Standard browser such as Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Displays web content as part of an Android app’s interface. | Delivers a standalone browser experience. |
| UI and navigation | The app can define navigation rules and integrate page content into its own UI. | Provides browser-managed UI, including browser trust signals such as the address bar. |
| Native integration | Can connect JavaScript to app code; that capability requires careful limits. | Use when a page does not need the app’s embedded native integration. |
| Best fit | Controlled destinations, hybrid screens, or web content that is one part of a product. | Arbitrary web destinations and a user-facing browsing experience. |
What happens when an app loads a page
1. The app creates and configures the view
An activity creates a WebView and can configure its WebSettings, a WebViewClient, and a WebChromeClient. The view is an Android UI component, so its eventual rendered surface appears within the app’s view hierarchy.

2. The app requests content
A basic load starts with a call such as webView.loadUrl("https://example.com"). The URL is an illustrative example, not a recommended destination or a special WebView address.
3. Chromium processes and renders the page
Chromium handles the web work: networking, parsing, layout, script execution and painting. The rendered result is shown inside the Android view. The app’s callbacks and settings shape how that embedded experience behaves; they do not turn the view into a separate Chrome window.

Which process runs WebView, and where is its data kept?
Browser code and app permissions
WebView browser code runs in the host application’s process. It therefore operates within that app’s permissions and limitations. WebView also keeps cookies, cache and related data in the app’s data directory, so one app’s WebView data store is separate from another app’s.
Renderer isolation
Renderer code is sandboxed and has fewer permissions than the browser code. Android WebView’s supported configurations run network and GPU services in-process. This architecture provides a boundary between renderer work and the host app, but it is not a reason to expose powerful native capabilities to untrusted page content.

How apps control navigation and browser-like events
Use WebViewClient for navigation
WebViewClient handles navigation decisions and related page callbacks. Without a client, links may be sent to another app that can handle the URL. An app can assign a client to keep selected links in the WebView, then route links outside its approved destinations to an external browser. WebView also maintains back and forward history.
For an app that embeds web content, make the destination policy explicit: keep only intended hosts in the view and send other destinations to a browser or handle them as appropriate for the product. The callbacks are where app-specific navigation rules belong.

Use WebChromeClient for browser-like UI events
WebChromeClient handles events such as JavaScript dialogs, page progress, permissions and requests to open multiple windows. New windows are ignored by default. Enabling multiple-window support and implementing onCreateWindow changes that behavior; Android recommends preventing popups and new windows unless the app has a clear need for them.
How JavaScript can call Android code—and why it is risky
What addJavascriptInterface exposes
addJavascriptInterface injects a named Java object into a page’s JavaScript environment. For apps targeting API level 17 or later, only public methods annotated with @JavascriptInterface are exposed. The injected object becomes visible after the next page load, and calls to it run on a private background thread.

The trust boundary is broader than one page
Android warns that using addJavascriptInterface lets JavaScript control the app. The API reference says the object is exposed to every frame, and the app cannot identify the calling frame’s origin. As a result, untrusted content could invoke exposed methods with the host app’s permissions. A page that looks trusted in the main frame does not make every frame safe to trust.
Reduce the bridge’s authority
- Use a JavaScript bridge only for controlled content; Android’s guide advises against it unless the app wrote all HTML and JavaScript in the WebView and does not allow navigation to foreign pages.
- Expose as few methods as possible, validate every input, and avoid methods that grant sensitive capabilities.
- Restrict navigation to an allowlist of HTTPS origins rather than relying on page appearance or user expectations.
- Consider AndroidX WebKit’s message-based communication mechanisms where appropriate, while still designing and validating the trust boundary.
What happens during rotation, background reclamation and renderer failure?
Activity recreation
A configuration change such as rotation destroys and recreates the activity and its WebView. WebView’s saveState and restoreState methods can preserve navigation context, including history, across recreation or background process reclamation. Keep saved state small enough to avoid oversized activity bundles.
Renderer termination
On Android API level 26 and later, renderer priority controls how likely the system is to kill a WebView renderer under memory pressure. Even the highest priority cannot prevent every kill or crash. Production apps should handle WebViewClient.onRenderProcessGone and recreate or replace the affected WebView rather than assuming its renderer will always remain available.
These are different failure cases: activity recreation rebuilds the view as part of Android’s lifecycle, while renderer termination means the process responsible for rendering that view has gone away. Save and restore navigation context for the former; explicitly recover the affected view for the latter.

When WebView is the right choice
Choose WebView when web content needs to live inside a controlled app screen, follow app-specific navigation rules, or integrate with native features. Choose a standard browser when users need to browse arbitrary destinations or benefit from browser-managed identity, permissions and security UI. A native screen is the alternative when the experience does not need web content. The right choice depends on how much UI and navigation control the app needs, whether JavaScript/native integration is necessary, and how much lifecycle and crash-recovery work the team can own.
