On Android, voice typing usually starts from the microphone on the on-screen keyboard: focus a text field, tap the microphone, speak, and the recognized words appear in that field. The details depend on whether you use standard Gboard talk-to-text or Pixel’s separate Advanced voice typing feature, which differ in supported devices, commands, and how speech or text is processed.
How to dictate with Gboard

Open an app and tap a text field so the keyboard appears.

Tap the microphone near the top of Gboard. If prompted, allow microphone access. Wait for “Speak now,” then dictate.

Speak punctuation when needed. Google documents commands such as “Period,” “Comma,” “Exclamation point,” “Question mark,” “New line,” and “New paragraph”; availability varies by language.

Review the inserted text. Tap a misheard word to select it and dictate a replacement, choose a suggested correction, or edit it by typing.
Standard Gboard talk-to-text is the general keyboard workflow and is not limited to Pixel phones. Google says it does not work with every language. Google’s Gboard setup instructions cover enabling voice typing; its troubleshooting guidance says standard talk-to-text sends your voice to Google for transcription. That statement describes Gboard, not every Android keyboard.
If the microphone is missing or does not respond

In Gboard settings, check that Voice typing is turned on.

In Android app permissions, allow Gboard to use the microphone, choosing the available “while using the app” option if offered.

Return to a text field and check whether the microphone appears on the keyboard. If it still does not, confirm the selected keyboard is Gboard and that the language you need is supported.
A missing microphone is not by itself evidence of a hardware fault; the keyboard setting and microphone permission are the first checks.

Google describes Advanced voice typing as a Pixel feature in its Advanced voice typing help. Its requirements and command set can vary with device, language, region, system components, and updates, so the options shown on your phone are the practical check for current availability.

Advanced voice typing’s narrower feature limits
Google lists “Fix it” for Pixel 8 or later, English (United States), and a network connection. Detailed edits are documented for Pixel 8 and later in English (US). The ordinary Advanced dictation path and these server-assisted editing features do not have identical processing: Google says dictation text remains on-device, while detailed edits send the voice-command transcript and full text in the input field to Google for processing. Google says no audio is sent for detailed edits and that it does not store the text or audio on its servers.
Language and connectivity limits
Language support for typing does not guarantee the same support for dictation, automatic language detection, or voice commands. Google’s Advanced voice typing troubleshooting page lists English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish for that feature, and says the primary Gboard and device languages must match. Those details apply to the documented Advanced feature, not every Gboard configuration.
To add a typing language, open Gboard settings, add the keyboard language, then switch with the language key or space bar. This changes the keyboard language, not the Android device language. Standard Gboard dictation sends speech to Google for transcription, so the available documentation does not establish a universal offline guarantee for standard voice typing across devices, languages, or versions. Pixel Advanced voice typing’s on-device dictation is a distinct feature; network access is specifically required for “Fix it.”

Google’s statements describe its own products and are not independent audits. For standard Gboard talk-to-text, Google says voice is sent to Google for transcription. That is separate from optional personalization and improvement programs.

Personalization and federated learning
Google says Gboard may save audio recordings and transcripts on the device for personalization; these can be removed through Gboard’s privacy settings. Separately, Google says federated learning sends learnings rather than the text spoken or typed. Google says this runs while the phone is charging, connected to Wi-Fi, and not in use, and is on by default; it can be disabled. See Google’s explanation of how Gboard gets better.
Optional audio donation
Audio donation is voluntary and separate from ordinary transcription. If you agree to donate, Google says audio snippets are sent to and stored by Google to improve speech recognition. Google states that donated speech snippets are up to 15 seconds long, or up to 25 seconds when silence or unrecognized audio is included, and are not kept beyond 18 months. Google also says some donated snippets may be reviewed by people. Audio donation can be turned off in Gboard’s Privacy settings. These are Google’s stated limits, not general measures of transcription speed or accuracy.
What to expect from accuracy
Recognition can vary with language support, the words being spoken, and the feature in use. The cited Google documentation does not provide an independent accuracy benchmark or a head-to-head comparison of standard Gboard and Pixel Advanced voice typing. Treat the transcript as a draft: review names, numbers, punctuation, and any text that could change the meaning before sending or saving it.
