Android handhelds can play Steam games either by streaming them from a gaming PC or, on supported hardware, by running Steam locally with DroidDeck. Streaming leaves game rendering to the PC and sends video and audio to the handheld; DroidDeck runs the game on the handheld itself, so compatibility and performance depend on the device.
How Steam game streaming works on an Android handheld
With Steam Remote Play, the game runs on a host computer. That PC renders the game and streams its audio and video over the network to another device, while the handheld sends controller input back. The handheld is acting as a display and controller, not running the PC game locally. See Valve’s Steam Remote Play overview.
This approach requires access to a host PC with the game installed and running, as well as a network connection suitable for interactive streaming. The PC does the demanding game-rendering work; the handheld’s role is to receive the stream and return inputs.
What DroidDeck changes: local execution instead of streaming
DroidDeck is not a Steam Link-style streaming app. Its FAQ says it runs Valve’s Linux ARM64 Steam client in Big Picture mode on the Android device and executes game binaries there. In this model, no PC streams the game during play: the handheld itself does the work. The project’s FAQ describes the app at droiddeck.app/faq.

The environment has several layers. DroidDeck describes the Steam client running in a proot Linux environment with the gamescope compositor. For Windows games, it uses ARM64 Proton with FEX instruction translation. This is neither game streaming nor a Windows virtual machine; it is a compatibility setup that attempts to run supported games on Android hardware.

Neither method is universally better. Streaming can make sense when you have a gaming PC and a suitable network; DroidDeck may suit a supported handheld when you want local execution and accept its hardware and game-compatibility limits.

Which Android handhelds can run DroidDeck?
DroidDeck’s FAQ specifies Android 9 or newer and a Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset with Adreno 730 or newer, or Adreno 8xx. The project README lists Mali, Xclipse, PowerVR, and Adreno 710 as unsupported. These are the project’s stated requirements, not a guarantee that every device meeting them will run every game well.
The project names the Ayn Odin 2, Retroid Pocket 5, and Ayaneo Pocket S as verified handhelds. It also cautions that hardware validation is limited and that compatibility and performance vary by device. Check the DroidDeck project README for the project’s current device information before installing.

Install DroidDeck and launch Steam
- Check device support. Confirm that the Android version and GPU meet the project’s stated requirements. Keep in mind that meeting them does not guarantee compatibility with a particular game.
- Allow for storage. The project README estimates about 3 GB for the runtime and another 1.1 GB for the desktop and emulators. This is an installation estimate, not a performance measurement; games require additional storage.
- Download the APK. Get the installer from the project’s Releases page and install it on the handheld.
- Install the Linux runtime. Open DroidDeck and follow its runtime installation process.
- Check Android’s child-process restriction. The README says to turn off Android’s “Restrict child processes” setting before Steam launches. Some Android 12 and 13 devices have a guided fix, according to the project.
- Launch Steam and sign in. Steam downloads on first launch, so allow time and storage for that initial setup.
Check game compatibility before relying on local play
DroidDeck’s compatibility is not universal. Its FAQ says games that require kernel-level Windows anti-cheat without Linux Proton support will not run. Other games can also vary by device and compatibility, so verify the particular title rather than assuming a Steam library will work as-is. The project’s FAQ documents its compatibility guidance.
The project also says its FAQ information about offline play, cloud features, and supported games is project documentation. Treat those details as guidance from DroidDeck, not as an independent guarantee for every device or game.

What changed in DroidDeck 0.3.0?
Version 0.3.0 was published on 2026-10-02. Its release notes describe a more handheld-focused interface and features including Steam Deck-style controller support, gyro, Steam Input virtual pads, performance and battery overlays, GPU driver selection, Flathub ARM64 apps, user-supplied AppImages, and in-app update channels. The notes also report Steam startup time falling from about 31 seconds to about 6 seconds; that is the project’s release comparison, not independent testing. See the DroidDeck release notes.
DroidDeck says it is not affiliated with Valve. It is open-source software under GPL-3.0, as described in the project repository.
