Yes, you can start Emergency SOS on many supported Android phones while they’re locked—but only someone who can operate the phone can trigger its button sequence. If your phone is out of reach, a contact cannot remotely activate ordinary SOS. Some Pixel phones offer separate automatic crash detection, while satellite SOS, emergency location, and contact sharing each have their own requirements.
Can you use Emergency SOS from a locked Android phone?
Usually, a lock screen does not prevent an emergency call or a configured SOS sequence. Android’s overview describes starting Emergency SOS by pressing the power button five or more times. On Pixel phones, the sequence may then require you to touch and hold an on-screen circle, or it may proceed after a configured countdown. What happens next depends on the phone and its settings; manufacturers can change the screens and behavior.
Google says Pixel Emergency SOS does not work in airplane mode or while Battery Saver is on. Android’s general guidance also notes that availability varies by device and region. See Android’s Emergency SOS and Personal Safety overview and Google Pixel Help’s emergency instructions.

On a locked Pixel, swipe up from the lock screen, tap Emergency, then use the emergency dialer. The dialer can differ by Android generation and availability. Google says carrier or regional limitations may make its Fast Emergency Dialer unavailable; in that case, a traditional dial pad is used. Other Android manufacturers may use different steps.

Prepare the SOS actions before you need them
On Pixel, use the Personal Safety app to configure emergency contacts and medical information, choose how the SOS flow starts its actions, and grant permissions for features such as location sharing or recording. The options available depend on the model and software. Google’s Android overview likewise cautions that availability varies by device and region.
Can someone trigger SOS if your phone is out of reach?
No—not through ordinary Android Emergency SOS or Emergency Location Service (ELS). The power-button sequence requires someone to operate the phone. ELS is associated with a user-initiated call or text to an emergency number; it is not a remote-control feature. Google states in its Android Emergency Location Service documentation that “no one can externally prompt your phone to call emergency services.”

Pixel Car Crash Detection is a separate exception
Supported Pixel phones can detect a severe crash if Car Crash Detection is enabled and available. The phone may prompt the user and attempt an emergency call if the user does not respond. This is not a way for a contact to activate SOS remotely. Google lists Pixel 4a and later, including Pixel Fold, for the feature in specified countries. It requires a SIM and permissions, and does not work in airplane mode or with Battery Saver on. Check Google’s Pixel emergency-help page for current eligibility and setup details.

Depending on the phone and configuration, Emergency SOS can call emergency services, share location and updates with selected contacts, or record video. On Pixel, emergency contacts and location permissions are needed for the relevant sharing actions; recording and automatic video sharing are separate choices. These actions do not all happen by default, so review the SOS settings on your specific device.

Emergency contact sharing is not ELS
Emergency Sharing sends information to personal contacts you selected. ELS, by contrast, can make a device’s emergency location available directly to authorized emergency response services after a supported emergency call or text. Google says the location is computed on-device and that Google does not receive the emergency location itself. On Android 10 or later, supported ELS can use an emergency-location bypass when the device’s Location setting is off; availability still depends on the region and mobile network. Lock-screen medical information is visible to others
In Pixel Personal Safety, enable Show when locked if you want responders to see configured emergency information without unlocking the device. Google warns: “Anyone who picks up your phone can view your lock screen message and emergency information even with your phone locked.” Choose the information with that trade-off in mind. What if there is no mobile or Wi-Fi coverage?
Pixel Satellite SOS may provide an emergency connection on supported devices and in supported locations when mobile and Wi-Fi networks are unavailable. Google’s support page lists Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold in the United States except Hawaii and Alaska. Availability can change, so check the current Pixel Satellite SOS support page before relying on it.

The documented flow starts from the emergency dialer. You answer an emergency questionnaire, may choose whether to notify your emergency contacts, and follow on-screen prompts to point the phone toward a satellite. Google says a clear view of the sky is needed; trees, terrain, and buildings can obstruct the connection, and connection and response times vary with location and conditions. The support page also requires Google Messages to be the default messaging app.

How Emergency Live Video differs from SOS recording
Emergency Live Video is a separate, dispatcher-prompted feature. During an emergency call or text, a dispatcher may request live video if they decide it would help and be safe. A prompt appears and the user chooses whether to share; sharing can be stopped. Google’s announcement described an initial rollout in the United States and select regions of Germany and Mexico for Android 8 or later phones with Google Play services. That announcement’s rollout scope may not reflect current availability. See Google’s Emergency Live Video announcement.
What to check on your phone before an emergency
- Find your phone’s Emergency SOS settings and confirm the power-button trigger and any countdown or confirmation step for your model.
- Add emergency contacts and decide whether location sharing or video recording should be enabled.
- Review medical information and decide whether it should appear on the lock screen.
- Check whether your region and carrier support emergency dialing and ELS, and whether your Pixel model and location support Satellite SOS or Car Crash Detection.
- Understand limitations such as airplane mode, Battery Saver, permissions, network coverage, and satellite obstructions where applicable.
Do not assume that every Android phone has the same menu, automatic actions, or satellite capability. Emergency calls and location reports can also depend on the carrier, coverage, device state, and local emergency systems. If you accidentally call emergency services, Google instructs you not to hang up; tell the operator it was accidental.
